Four hundred thousand deaths, six hundred thousand attempts, and two hundred thousand considerations in a single year. The seeming epidemic that is teen suicide plagues the minds of teachers, students, friends, neighbors, and parents. Despite this wide range of victims, teenage suicide most directly affects the parents of these children, who commonly feel an overwhelming sense of guilt due to their inability to help their children. However, to many it appears obvious that there are not many things parents can do to prevent suicide, for many reasons. Furthermore, William Shakespeare proves this with his tragedy “Romeo and Juliet” in which two teenagers take their lives. In other words, Shakespeare expertly portrays two young people battling …show more content…
For example, both the Montagues and the Capulets mistake many of the blatantly obvious signs of depression and suicidal thoughts in Romeo and Juliet for common behavior. “Grief’s of mine own lie heavy in my breast, which thou wilt propagate to have it pressed with more of thine. This love that thou hast shown doth add more grief to too much of mine own” (1.1 177-180). In other words, Romeo is very obtrusive in telling Benvolio that he is extremely dismal and cannot handle the stress under which he is. However, Benvolio writes this behavior off as an effect of teen romance, leaving Romeo in isolation with his sad thoughts. In contrast, if Benvolio were to understand this behavior as abnormal, Romeo could receive the help he needed in order to escape this feeling of terrible pain and stress. Therefore, with proper education of depressive behavior, parents and relatives could provide help for their children. In addition, a parent of a child with suicidal tendencies, who wishes to remain anonymous, explained a very similar statement. “I would feel like a failure. Like I didn’t realize my child was in that much pain and I wasn’t there for them.” In other words, this parent saw an abundance of common warning signs, but she ignored the signs in her child because she was not aware her child needed help. So, if this mother, along with all others, receive education on the behavior of suicidal teenagers, help can be given to the teens before it becomes too late. Additionally, Lady Capulet in “Romeo and Juliet” demonstrates a clear ignorance for the signs of depression in her child. “Evermore weeping for your cousin’s death? What, wilt thou wash him from his grave with tears? An if thou couldst, thou couldst not make him live. Therefore have done. Some grief shows much of love. But much of grief shows some want of wit” (3.5 69-73). To explain further, Lady Capulet
Perhaps if Lord Capulet is more gentle with his daughter's thoughts and feelings, the situation will be settled in a rational and mature manner with no suicides needed. Furthermore, Lord Capulet also states "Content thee, gentle coz, let him alone... I would not for the wealth of all this town here in my house do him disparagement... He shall be endured" (I.v.66, 70-71, 77). To put it another way, Lord Capulet is entirely why Romeo and Juliet meet in the first place.
For, by my soul, I’ll ne’er acknowledge thee, / Nor what is mine shall never do thee good” (3.5.194-195). This threat to disown his only daughter shows the severity of Capulet’s hot-headed nature. Had Capulet not exploded in the way that he did, Juliet would not have turned to death as a solution for her desperate state; she would not have killed herself, and the same would have been true for Romeo. Although Shakespeare may have wanted readers to believe that Romeo and Juliet were fortune’s fool, the evidence clearly shows that the obstinance, inconsistency, and quick-tempered nature of Capulet are to blame for the lovers’ tragic
There are many reasons why Romeo and Juliet killed themselves, Two factors caused Romeo Juliet’s death were Friar Lawrence and the family feud that was going on between the Capulets and the Montagues. Both had impacted Juliet and Romeo into thinking that killing themselves was the only way to get out of their problems and the secrets that had been made. Friar Lawrence made many mistakes in trying to keep Romeo and Juliet's marriage a secret and by getting Juliet out of marriage to Paris. He created a chain of secrets starting with him saying in Act 2 scene 3 “
In a moment of despair, Romeo looks down into the face of a lifeless Juliet. After one last kiss Romeo ends his fragile life with poison. The story of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare revolves around the decisions made by characters. Generally, these choices are poor and lead to the death of others. The deaths of Romeo and Juliet are controversial and have many possible culprits; however, the person most responsible for their deaths is the Prince.
Without guidance, naive teenagers make foolish decisions without a second thought. However in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the audience watches as two young kids, Romeo and Juliet, get carried away by their seemingly deep love for each other with the destructive guidance by their two parental figures, The Nurse and The Friar. Though both of those figures play a role in leading the two young lovers to their untimely death, one of them is the main culprit in those tragic events.
“Wisely and slow. They stumble that run fast”(2.3.102). In the drama Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, there are many characters who could be accused of provoking Romeo and Juliet to their suicide. Even though the ultimately took their own lives, Friar has led them to this path by marrying Romeo and Juliet to end their families feud, making a perilous plan for Juliet, and leaving Juliet unassisted in the Capulet tomb. There are those who believe that the Nurse is at fault of their suicide.
Additionally, both Romeo and Juliet commit suicide, neither death was premeditated and they were both impulsive in their decision making. And though they tried seeking counsel from a clergy member, Friar Lawrence, the advice wasn’t
Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is a timeless love story about two teenagers who fall in love, get married, and eventually kill themselves. Throughout history, mental health has not been as acknowledged as it is today, though the signs were still there. Throughout Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, both Romeo and Juliet exhibit warning signs of their mental health that will eventually lead to their mutual demise. Romeo exhibits a warning sign about wanting to kill himself which could lead to their mutual demise. Romeo has just recently killed Tybalt in retaliation for Tybalt killing Mercutio.
Question 6: Of all the minor characters in the play, who was the most responsible for contributing to the death of romeo and juliet? was it the nurse? friar laurence, capulet, tybalt, mercutio or the apothecary? In the play Romeo and Juliet the two main character ended up killing themselves, the reason why they both killed themself was because a series of unfortunate events, The problems started when was when Romeo was banished for killing Tybalt but the reason why he killed him was because Mercutio and Tybalt got into a fight but Romeo tried to break it up but then Tybalt killed Mercutio and Romeo got enraged and killed Tybalt for revenge.
Before Romeo meets Juliet at the Capulets’ party, Shakespeare portrays him as a romantic, melancholic, and emotional young man involved in an unrequited relationship with another young women. When a fight between Capulets and Montagues in Act One, Scene One finally disperses, Benvolio claims his cousin did not participate in the quarrel, and Montague acknowledges his son’s sorrow and that he encloses himself in his room, yet he does not know why [1.1.135-145]. This implies that Romeo, unlike the other young men of the two conflicting families, favors pacifism and keeps his issues secret. Montague adds, “But he, [his] own affections’ counselor” [1.1.150]. Although he is explicitly shown as depressed, Romeo does not share his concerns with
Another cause of teen suicide is emotional and physical abuse. “Child abuse reports have maintained a steady growth for the past 10 years, with total numbers of reports nationwide increasing 45% since 1987” (Child Abuse Statistics). In act 4 scene 1, while angry, Juliet's father pushes her around and scares her enough for her to hide behind the nurse. Juliet's father was frustrated and calling her ungrateful for not wanting to marry Paris, the man he is arranging her to marry(Shakespeare, William).
Romeo professes his love for Juliet after knowing her for less than a day, “Lady, by yonder blessed moon I swear / That tips with silver all these fruit-tree tops--” (2.2.107-108). Romeo acts spontaneously, without considering the possible consequences of his actions, but instead acting on his emotional impulses. Romeo’s impulsive actions can not simply be ignored, he is responsible for his actions. Dr. David Fassler, a psychiatry professor at the University of Vermont College of Medicine with extensive knowledge on brain development, said that, “Research doesn’t absolve teens [From their actions] but offers some explanation for their behavior” (Ritter 1).
he definition of suicide is, “the act or an instance of taking one's own life voluntarily and intentionally especially by a person of years of discretion and of sound mind.” Suicide is such a horrible thing. Many feel as if that is the only solution and it is not. If people were just accepted for who they are and what they enjoy, there would be less amounts of suicide in the world. One way Romeo and Juliet’s suicide could have been prevented is if the parents would have look aside from the family issues and accepted their children’s feelings.
The aging and demise of Romeo At the start of the play, Shakespeare does an excellent job of explaining Romeo's changes. Romeo is extremely immature. Shakespeare shows this trait by allowing us to see how Romeo behaves when he is distraught that Rosaline's love isn’t returned, in this he says “She hath forsworn to love, and in that vow / Do I live dead that live to tell it now” (i.i.223-224). Shakespeare shows Romeo's lack of maturity by having him have a conversation with Benvolio where he tells him that he should find other women at a party the Capulets hold.
In both “The Sorrows of Young Werther” by Goethe and Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” the title characters commit suicide. In the following I will compare these two pieces under the aspect of how the authors handled the suicide. First of all, it is important to say that in both writings the suicide is romanticised because it is portrayed as the last way out of a miserable situation. Instead of kill-ing oneself in times of hardship, one should try to find a solution that does not in-volve death.
