The Roaring Twenties were full of dramatic, social, political, and economic changes ("The Roaring Twenties,1). Post World War I, the era marked the beginning of modern times with new and worthy developments. More and more people were abetted to live in the cities, most people had jobs, therefore money to spend, and they spend it by “having a good time” (McNeese,88). While the society got rid of their miseries; sciences, arts, and businesses renewed themselves by evolving. This research paper briefly gives examples from advances in technology, transportation, and entertainment while discussing their benefits to the United States. Initially, three major advances in technology were made during the 1920s that benefited the United States: radios, …show more content…
Automobiles were affordable and were designed carefully. The majority of these cars were produced by the Ford Motor Company, led by Henry Ford, who designed a different model each year to satisfy the insatiable crowd. Many of the automotive innovations that we think of as being modern—like electric powered cars, four wheel drive, front wheel drive, hybrid fuel and electric cars—were introduced during the 1920s. The automobiles had various different colors in order to get the attention of people, especially woman, and through time, they evolved to become more comfortable to drive for men (Scott ,1). The automobiles were beneficial to the U.S because they expanded the area of habitat. Since transportation was easier and faster, people could live in the suburbs on the edge of towns. For example, queens outside New York doubled in size in the 1920s. By the end of the 1920s, more than 26 million cars were sold, and lots of new towns were created. Another advancement that is important is the development of trucks. In the beginning, trucks were old fashioned and had lots of flaws. However, Volvo developed its own truck, named “Series 1”, which was fairly expensive. Series 1 was increased in weight, payload, and had a decent performance, which created an unexpected success in a short amount of time ("Back in the Roaring ‘20s”,1). At 1929, there were 3.5 million trucks in the newly builded roads of the United States. The trucks were beneficial to the United States because they gave rise to a new industry. New transportation companies were build, usually transporting solid goods, like various kinds of metals. Unemployment levels decreased, and trade gained speed with the help of the truck industry("Back in the Roaring ‘20s,2). The last important advancement in transportation that benefitted the United States was the development
Industrial and Transportation Revolution During the late 1800s, the United States economy changed due to new inventions, remarkably rapid growth, and new forms of communication and transportation. Different factories were being built, and manufacturers had begun to reorganize the way of work. Factories and workers were going from hand production to machinery. The Industrial Revolution marked a turning point.
The end of World War 1 left a big impact in economy. So, they decided to shift place to the economy transitioned from wartime production to peacetime production. They started that by running the economy to a better condition. Henry Ford’s company produced automobile and the latest of those product is the new Model T which were sold cheaply so many American could afford them. As a result, State funded programs to build roads and highways which changed the America’s landscape.
There were many noticeable components that contributed to the advancement and growth of the United States such as: industrialization, the Great Depression, and war. Of the many occurrences, technology had the single greatest impact on the continued evolution of the United States. The new inventions, new discoveries, and new innovation led to greater economic growth and wealth that the American people experienced during 1920-1940. One invention that influenced and continues to impact American lives is the automobile. Kyvig (2002) has argued that automobile ownership tripled during the 1920s, and by the end of the decade four families out of five owned an automobile.
The creation of these jobs helped to stimulate economic growth in the United States, as well as show the rest of the world that the United States had world influence by proving that they were able to surpass other countries in the output of goods and services. The industrial boom was able to set forth the “American standard of living”, which “offered a new language for criticizing the inequalities of wealth and power in Progressive America” (Foner 703). American life changed between 1877 and 1920 by seeing the emergence of the working class and the migration of Americans to the city, which is in result of the industrial expansion. As more and more factories were built, farmers and homemakers abandoned their jobs at home in pursuit of greater economic opportunities. Since the factories were primarily being built in urban areas, this meant that these Americans left behind their homes as well.
As like the telephone , motor vehicles helped improve the network of transportation and communications ,it also created new job opportunities as well. The inventions of power driven machines helped maximise productivity and capacity with more products being produced in a small amount of time, this also created wealth and made it more easier to make goods and products. These factors led to more companies and industries such as the railroad industry which one of them was the transcontinental railroad that brought the resources from coast to coast with the help of land grants from the government. This made it easier to get resources to different areas of the nation in a small amount of time. It also expanded many markets.
In this frame, there were also steamboats and railroads eras, which made a vast difference in the speedy process of supplying the customer with the much-needed goods in a more timely fashion, the steamboat reduced the cargo rates across the entire country, while the railroads were quicker than the steamboats and did not depend on waterways or mules and their rails didn't freeze over. The communication revolution made it possible for messages to travel in the greatest speed known, through the use of the telegraph, which made knowing something through the nation a matter of mere seconds. During the commercializing process, farmers didn't have to grow every single product that they used, they could now buy their items and clothing from their local market at a cost that they saw fit and reasonable. Farmers now had in their possession new and improved machinery that made their very lifestyles a more comfortable atmosphere, with the cotton gin being made public, slavery was now realized as the thing that would change the forefront of the
The Civil War had concluded and America was on the path to rebuilding itself as a single nation. America experienced many changes such as large amounts of urbanization and industrialization, while also taking their own chance at imperialism. America’s urbanization and industrialization was a result of the Civil War. Many individuals began transitioning from rural areas to urban areas by the beginning of the twentieth century. These urban areas began to experience new inventions such as the automobile, highways, and entertainment such as sports and film.
Shipping things around the country really made a great change in the technological advancements. At the same time we had massive changes going on in politics. Big business took control over politics. The senators never had a say in anything that was going on. The Big Businessmen were bribing the senators to say what they wanted.
Between the year of 1865 and the year of 1920, the United States moved towards becoming a more industrialized and developing society. With this change taking place, resulted in improvement with how people live with family and earned money differently. The three major aspects of industrialization during the 1865 and 1920 that influenced the politics, economy and society of the United States are: entrepreneurship, technology, as well as transport and communication network. Entrepreneurship: the period after the Civil War from 1865 to 1920 was characterized by fast economic growth in the country.
The groups of people that were most changed by these new innovations were factory workers, middle-class urban residents, and midwestern farmers. There were many effects that these creations had on these groups of people. These innovations allowed travelling and the transporting of goods to be easily accomplished, made communication between others simpler and more efficient, and allowed for better and safer ways of lighting to be established. Automobiles allowed for travelling and the transporting of goods to be easily accomplished. The creation of the automobile was extremely beneficial for midwestern farmers, middle-class urban residents, and factory workers.
This caused America to flourish with new inventions, for example the automobile, household machinery, television, etc. Even old inventions and ideas were improving, like the radio, movies, and the use of advertising. The radio, movies, driving, and buying the various new products became a part of the daily lives. These inventions created a sense of ease for daily lives in America in the 1920s. It made life, jobs, and experiences easier.
Sean Ashley H2332: US history Ruane 4/12/15 The Roaring Twenties Most people would say that the 1920’s changed the culture of America for years, and decades to come. “The 1920’sheralded a dramatic break between America’s past and future,” said historian Joshua Zeitz.
The 1920s carried much change in society. Some of these changes were more rights for women, jazz music, and prohibition. The people of the 1920s were disillusioned by society lacking in idealism and vision, sense of personal alienation, and Americans were obsessed with materialism and outmoded moral values (The Roaring Twenties).Cultural changes were strongly influenced by the destruction of World War I ending 1918. America needed to recover and with it youth rebelled against the norms of the older generations.
Automobiles in the1920s Can you imagine a life without a car to get you from place to place? Today we rely so heavily on automobiles that most people use them several times a day. The automobile was not invented in the 1920s but it began to change and start to change the way all Americans lived. The new ideas of Henry Ford and mass production with the assembly line created the opportunity to make lots of automobiles and also to make them affordable for almost everyone. The automobile industry opened the door for lots of other business opportunities like service stations and motels.
The 1920s were the first years of the new, modern America, with a growing consumer society and new ideas and rules. America saw many changes throughout this decade, including but not limited to social, economic and political changes. Throughout this time, new values were made with the growth of new forms of entertainment and education. After the Progressive Era, the ideas of political figures changed with a new focus on conservative politics and less labor issues. With the new ability for people to buy other products than basic needs, their money went to new inventions, causing new industries to grow.
