Teaching Philosophy Statement

A large group of students in the United States makeup a large population of English language learners. Students who are considered English language learners undergo many challenges in their education, and without the necessary support and resources from their educators it can make it hard for them to succeed. A teacher plays a significant role in the success of a child, and it is crucial for them to be able to provide the proper education to students whose first language is not English. It is also very important for teachers to understand the challenges that these students are facing. Having empathy towards the students allows for the teacher to create better connections and relationships to better help them.

Apply relevant professional, personal, or other real-world experiences. This is a great opportunity to share knowledge of real-world experience. The research and books written may have valid theories and concepts, but it is the hands on experience every day that tells the story. In this platform, you are in the classroom and there are times that the concepts and theories fly right out of the class.

I am currently teaching at Swainston Middle School in North Las Vegas. Our student population is very diverse, including English Language Learners (ELLs). During this time as a teacher, I have served students with different language needs. It has been my goal to engage ELL students in my lessons as every other student. It is my opinion that as teachers we are all language teachers.

The knowledge gained through my undergraduate degree in Childhood Studies; has equipped me with a solid foundation in the psychological, sociological and educational development of children. Through the course I learnt how to become an inclusive, versatile and well-rounded educator. As a result I was able to gain a 2:1 degree, which I hope will further demonstrate my academic ability to study at this level.

Over time, this experience has truly accelerated my problem-solving ability. Every student grasps information differently and, thus, every new student is a new challenge. Personally, my efforts are a pivotal component of the effort since the lack of such would cut down the number of volunteers for every student and, in turn, the amount of devotion one can exert. Overall, this experience exhibits my desire to assist those in my community and to refine my abilities as a true leader.

Enrolling “in college-preparatory classes, including courses in English, the physical sciences, a foreign languages, history, and mathematics” can also benefit those working to be teachers (“Elementary School Teachers” Occupational 4). Individuals, working to be teachers, benefit from taking classes such as social studies, psychology, and language arts. Other classes that might be helpful are courses in teaching methods including those in curriculum design, which teaches how to plan lessons, the philosophy of education, which teaches how to instruct and manage students. To become a teacher, individuals are required to have a teacher’s certificate. To qualify for this certificate by earning “a four-or five-year Bachelor of Education degree with a major in elementary education or a Bachelor of Arts degree with certain specified education courses” (“Elementary School Teacher” Occupational 3).

I am blessed to have been in the early childhood education field for over 17 years. I have been a mentor teacher; worked collaboratively in several start up projects; co-developed learning communities with family child care providers; and, coached preschools teachers in different capacities. As a result of these experiences, I have gained a good understanding of adult learners. I am very conscious of individual learning styles, have the keen ability to meet teachers where they are professionally and personally, and skillfully empower teachers as they take risks in their own growth process. The success of others is truly my professional reward and passion.

I am pursing a degree in Elementary Education and Early Childhood Education. I am passionate about education and excited to share the joy of learning with students. The perspective of wonder and sense of excitement that children bring into education motivates me daily. Teaching can leave a lasting impression in a child’s life and offers a special opportunity to shape the bright young minds of future generations. While many professions can be impactful, I believe the qualities of the person in the career position to be the most influential.

I believe that educating is a responsibility to the passionate, individual, and scholastic needs of students. Educators must enjoy and make the most of their work. As a young person, I frequently volunteered to keep children in our neighborhood. Presently, I am seeking a teaching profession so I can have a positive effect on today's kids. To be a compelling instructor, I think that one must be energetic and helpful.

In the next five years, I hope to obtain my Masters degree in Special Education. Receiving my master’s degree is an investment in my future that will provide many opportunities for me to work further with kids.
