Cheating, plagiarizing, and taking credit for another’s work is usually frowned upon, but the honor code was created to prevent these acts from occurring. Honor codes are different from school to school and are commonly not followed. The honor system was created to convey that when you lie about accomplishing something yourself, you will be penalized for it. Honor code systems should be revised because of the lack of student involvement, the lack of confidentiality, and the burdensome consequences.
To begin with, student involvement plays a huge role on campuses. It allows the student body to be fully aware of what rules are being enforced. Source C states that honor codes that allow students to have a role in are more effective. This is due to the collaboration between the students and the campus staff which allows each party to come to an agreement on how the dilemma of cheating, plagiarizing, etc. should be handled. It is something that can hardly impact others, but can greatly impact the person committing the act. Although many people believe that students in college or high school are old enough to be treated like adults and should know better, they restrict them with the honor code which demeans them and expects the worse from them. If they should be treated like adults, is it not fair to trust them to not cheat or plagiarize like one would trust any other adult not taking an exam or completing a paper? By involving the students, promising privacy, and coming to a consensus with ways to effectively inflict discipline, the honor code will not be a set of rules that the students will have to follow, but will, instead, instill a sense of unity between the student body and staff and achieve
Most teachers have great relationships with their students and want them to succeed. Some students struggle and end up cheating. Having an Honor Code would destroy these resected student-teacher relationships non existent due to the fact that students would have to tell on other students. The balance that had been established would be destroyed and could never be recovered. Having an Honor Code will fracture the trust that students have with teachers.
On the other hand, students will want to cheat if everyone is doing it. Honor codes that are reinforced by peers will still cheat because the tolerance isn’t as high if the administrators of the schools reinforced them. Most honor codes have many different levels of consequences; it all depends how much it’s going to weigh on the cheaters if it’s possible for them to do so. There are some obvious problems with the different enforcement strategies though; when relying on students to report other peers, one would also have to consider the honesty of the reporting student, not only that but student enforcement of rules is out of their responsibility. In Source B, Alyssa Vangellia addressed that “The Earlier drafts of the honor code included specific penalties for violations of the honor code, which many students opposed. Students were expected to report or confront a fellow student if they knew that he/she had cheated, lied, or stolen. Failure to confront a student would result in a period of probation. Students opposed this obligation to take action against another student because they did not see it as their responsibility.
There is an ongoing debate about whether or not the honor code, a code that obliges students to report academic dishonesty of their fellow peers, is strict enough, with many students claiming they feel that their privacy is being violated, and others worrying that requiring reporting cheating to superiors will cause friction amongst the student body. Others claim that with the abundance of recent statistics of high level cheating and plagiarism, a stricter honor code is a necessity. While it is important to respect the student’s privacy, and maintain an ideal learning environment, the fact remains that the honor code, as it is currently, is underperforming, and that stricter measures need to be taken, for the sake of a fairer learning environment. The main contention of the test takers seems to be that being closely watched and supervised make them feel uncomfortable and invalidated.
Honor codes, with careful consideration of rules and boundaries can govern schools, advancing students and making society a better place. Every year, thousands of students across the globe are punished for breaking an honor code. A study done by a public university showed that 42% of individuals knew the sanctions that can occur (Source E).Even students at the University of Virginia, a university known for honor, have been caught cheating, with hundreds more under investigation with expulsion as the punishment. (Source D) Yet students still choose to break these sanctioned rules, on the premise of not being caught, or simply not having a say in the creation of these rules. Rules forced upon a society lead to rebellion, a simple fact of history, and the basis of the creation of our country.
My school would greatly benefit from the application of an honor code as long as such a code is approved by the student body. Such an honor code would bring about students to reconsider their actions before cheating on a test. This is because an honor code has the ability to create a culture among students which discourages cheating. Also, including harsh punishments within the honor code would dishearten students from cheating out of fear of potential consequences. Schools which have not benefited from honor codes are very different from Classical, and therefore do not prove that an honor code would be ineffective at Classical.
The key to convincing students to follow an honor code is to make it known but not take it to the extreme. To begin, many schools take the honor code to an whole another level and tend to go overboard. Some schools are known for requiring students to write and sign a pledge of honor on every assignment that is given (Source B). This method of trying to control cheating could be perceived as being too much or immortal.
Honor codes help to inspire students to have integrity. Many people were quick to criticize the idea of having an honor system due to the belief that plagiarism and cheating rates would just increase. Although that may be true in some cases, a 22-year old student on University of Virginia's Honor Committee stated "It's not like we are saying we hate you, it's just that we have standards here" (Source D) after many students were caught plagiarizing. In the realm of Academia, an honor code often refers to a set of rules, either written or unwritten, which establish principles on dishonest practices, such as plagiarism and cheating. The goal of an honor code is to create an environment of trust and integrity between students and peers, as well as between students and teachers. There are several sentences in my essay on the Martins and Wilson’s paper that would be considered Honor Code Violations. In the Vanderbilt University Honor Code the part of The Honor Applied to Preparation of Papers it says “Failure to indicate any outside source of ideas, expressions, phrases, or sentences constitutes plagiarism” and then the Honor Code gives some samples of violation that can be applied to my case. In the fourth case the “word-for-word copying”, the sample in which the student write exactly the same words as the original author without quoting them and this act is considered plagiarism.

Usually students don’t want to be the person to tell on the people who do wrong, or there’s students who won’t admit to their fault’s even when their caught. Trust is now compromised and no one’s safe. Students and staff members can only trust themselves when an honor code is implemented. Introduction Academic Integrity is an essential component of third level education because it is the fundamental building block in which we derive our professional ethics and integrity from. It sets a pattern for life long integrity in all areas of life. Our job as students is to construct knowledge honestly and fairly. A culture of honesty earns a great deal of respect. Integrity is fundamental to everything we do in college, I don’t think we can have genuine learning without integrity.
