Symbols In The Book Night

Elizar’s faith in this story is essentially controlled by his dad. Elizar feels that he is now unfaithful to God, and his dad is the closest most available resource so he relies on him to help maintain his faith. In Night we see a chain reaction effect between Elizar and his father, if Shlomo is weakened and unmotivated, Elizar will be depressed and unfaithful. When Shlomo asks Elizar “Let me rest here…a little…I beg of you” (Wiesel, 105) Elizar knows that ”rest”= death so this tells him that his father is ready to die which means that Elizar’s symbol of faith is ready to die.

The theme of death permeates throughout the book "Night" by Elie Wiesel, which is a memoir of his experiences in the Nazi concentration camps during World War II. From the very beginning, the reader is confronted with the reality of death as Wiesel describes the forced separation of families and the inhumane treatment of prisoners. As the story progresses, the death toll rises and becomes more frequent, with mass killings, brutal beatings, and starvation. One of the most striking and haunting aspects of the book is the way in which death is depicted as almost normal and routine.

In the story “Winky” by George Saunders the use of symbols is used to show how you may get annoyed at things in life and think you hate them then you realize they are important and you can’t get rid of them. Neil experiences this in this story with His sister winky. Niel goes to a seminar led by Rodgers, At this seminar Niel starts to realize his sister Winky is causing problems. He tries to kick her out but he can’t. She means too much to him.

In the novel Night, the word night ironically is a motif, appearing again and again throughout the novel. One of its many appearances occurs near the beginning of the novel when Elie and his family are going to move into a smaller ghetto. “It was to be the last night spent in our house.” It next appears on the train when they hear that Aushwitz will be their last destination and that conditions were good. “Suddenly we felt free of the previous nights’ terror.”

Throughout his book the word night appears nearly every time something bad happens to Wiesel or his family; therefor, the word night can symbolize death or horrific events. In Wiesel’s book, “Night” he uses the term night on multiple occasions. Night is foreshadowing death or bad things. Wiesel’s father was summoned during the night by the counsel to discuss their deportation.

This is conveyed when Elie chooses to write Night; he depicts the suffering and cruelty holocaust victims endured, which directly raises awareness about the historical phenomenon. Elie’s theme can also been seen through the brave actions and informative words expressed by the characters within his text that refuse to remain silent about the injustice.

Eyes are described as “the windows to the soul” in many works. In Night, a memoir by Elie Wiesel, it is a common motif. The book focuses on the story of Eliezer, a young boy, during the bulk of the Holocaust. It tells how he made it through the first days in the concentration camp and all of the tragedy that occurred during his experience there. Throughout the novel, the author uses eyes to describe the emotions and feelings of many of the novel’s characters.

This can also be found in the title of the novel as it symbolizes death, loss of faith and hope. Additionally, as previously stated, the worst suffering seems to occur at night. For example, the narrative contains many last nights: the last night in Sighet, the last night in Buna, the last night with his father and many more. Night also symbolizes a world without God. Wiesel contends that God does not live in the concentration camps and God's people have no recourse.

In the novel, “Night” Elie Wiesel communicates with the readers his thoughts and experiences during the Holocaust. Wiesel describes his fight for survival and journey questioning god’s justice, wanting an answer to why he would allow all these deaths to occur. His first time subjected into the concentration camp he felt fear, and was warned about the chimneys where the bodies were burned and turned into ashes. Despite being warned by an inmate about Auschwitz he stayed optimistic telling himself a human can’t possibly be that cruel to another human.

As Elie writes about his brutal experiences in Auschwitz, he recalls stories that demonstrate how sometimes the most difficult struggle that he had, was the preservation of his own humanity, while the world around him was in complete chaos and disorder. Humanity is the most appropriate word to describe Night, because of Elie’s experiences of both humanity and inhumanity as he writes about his experience in Auschwitz. Elie Wiesel titles his book Night because night is significant to Elie’s experiences during the Holocaust because night symbolizes the darkening of souls and the loss in faith in others during this dark time period. It is also used as a passage of time to mark the most important and life changing moments in Elie’s life. One of the reasons Elie Wiesel chose to title his book Night is because the darkness of night represents the darkening of the souls and identities of many prisoners during the Holocaust. For example, after Elie’s first night in the concentration camp, he says, “The night was gone.

During slavery in America, many of the slaves lost hope, giving up on their freedom. Night, itself comes to symbolize death and the loss of hope. Elie Wiesel writes about how the horrors of the Holocaust caused him to lose faith in God and humanity. One such horror was the death march, during which many men died, collapsing in the snow after marching day and night. His will to be with his father and his will to survive keep him alive at Auschwitz Wiesel’s first residence.
