Symbolism In Gatsby

In this scene, Gatsby is trying his hardest to win back Daisy even though previous attempts were unsuccessful. In this attempt, Despite Gatsby’s efforts, he watches Daisy vanish into her, “rich, full life,” (Fitzgerald 149), Gatsby in this scene is left with nothing but his own feeling of still being married to her even though shes not there with him. With these feelings, Gatsbys emotions begin to show when he comes to the realization that he'll never get her back. Gatsbys dream of getting Daisy back to fall in love with him is seeming to be getting further and further away from reach as he watches her basically having her best life. Gatsby's obsession with Daisy goes beyond reason and he becomes nearly consumed by his own illusion, as he writes, “No amount of fire or freshness can challenge what a man will store up in his ghostly heart.”

On the way home from the hotel, Daisy, driving Gatsby's car, hits Tom's mistress, Myrtle. Gatsby says he'll take the blame for the death of Myrtle, therefore Daisy doesn't have to be arrested. Tom finds out and tells George Wilson, the husband of Myrtle. Enraged with the death of his wife, George shoots Gatsby in the pool. In the next chapter, Tom tells Nick one day passing by, "'That fellow had it coming to him.

Gatbsy lives across a big body of water from Daisy and her husband Tom’s house Gatbsy was once with Daisy 5 years prior to them finally meeting again. Now Gatsby was always in love with Daisy but she moved on and got with Tom and his “old money”. So this green light showed Gatsby’s hope to being together with Daisy once again: “...he stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way, and, far as I was from him, I could have sworn he was trembling. Gatsby wants Daisy in his life and he is determined to get her. He bought a mansion and moved across the water just for her. Five years later he has never stopped loving her and is his true love. Gatsby's extravagant parties and lots of people over his house for hope that Daisy would show up and he would find her again. The green light that Gatsby sees at the end of Daisy’s porch symbolizes wanting Daisy and being close to his dreams of having her.

In the story, Gatsby is at the first portrayed as a great man, until later the book goes on and his true colors and motives are revealed. As Gatsby invited Tom over to talk, he explains how all he wants is to have Daisy tell Tom that she had never loved him. In response “‘I wouldn’t ask too much of her’” I (Nick) ventured.

The Great Gatsby is an American novel written by Scott Fitzgerald. On the surface, the book revolves around the concept of romance, the love between two individuals. However, the novel incorporates less of a romantic scope and rather focuses on the theme of the American Dream in the 1920s. Fitzgerald depicts the 1920’s as an era of decline in moral values. The strong desire for luxurious pleasure and money ultimately corrupts the American dream which was originally about individualism.

The main relationship however is the romance between Nick’s wealthy neighbor Jay Gatsby, and Nick’s cousin Daisy Buchanan, who is married to a rich man named Tom Buchanan. Over the course of the book, Gatsby’s “love” for Daisy leads both of them to pursue an affair that ends in the death of Gatsby, by a man who mistook him for his wife’s killer. In Fitzgerald’s book The Great Gatsby, green is used symbolically. Green could be used as wealth, new life, hope, jealousy, and love. Throughout the story green is symbolized, for example in chapter 1 it says “involuntarily I glanced seaward and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far away, that might have been the end of a dock”. In this example the green light is a symbol for Gatsby’s hopes and dreams.

In the beginning of the book, we do not know what this green light means, but by the end of the story it goes to show it signifies Gatsby longing for Daisy’s love. Gatsby and Daisy used to date before he left for the war. Now that he is back and has found her, he wants her back. His arm being reached out represents his trying to reach his dreams. Item 2: Color Chart: In the book “The Great Gatsby,” by F. Scott Fitzgerald, colors have been used to represent the character’s unapparent and underlying thoughts, feelings, status and class. Through the motif of colors, Fitzgerald depicts the feelings of the character as he refers to a specific color while describing each one of them. The colors make a deep impact on the readers as they contain a profound meaning throughout the novel. There are around five main colors in the novel appearing frequently: white, yellow, green, blue and grey, which help the novel look more gaudy and idealistic.

Gatsby falls in love with Daisy the first minute he meets her and never stops loving her even though she has obviously moved on. Gatsby does everything he can to be closer to her like buying “that house so that Daisy would be just across the bay” (78). Gatsby knows that if he can get the girl of his dreams he will not feel lonely anymore. " He talked a lot about the past… he wanted to recover something, some idea of himself perhaps, that had gone into loving Daisy. His life had been confused and disordered since then, but if he could once return to a certain starting place and go over it all slowly, he could find out what that thing was” (87).

Throughout many brilliant works of literature, a common item is placed amongst them: symbols. Symbols are often a key to further understanding a point the author is trying to convey to their readers. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel, The Great Gatsby, he utilizes the literary tool of symbols to illustrate a larger picture for his themes and characters within the novel. For example, the color green plays a prominent role in The Great Gatsby throughout the duration of the novel. However, the color has can have various interpretations.

Gatsby had known Daisy for a long period of time. Gatsby realized when he first met Daisy that she was the love of his life. Though they were separated for a lengthy interim, Gatsby had devoted his entire life to gaining the love of Daisy. In fact, his mind was "full of the idea so long, dreamed it right through to the end, waited with his teeth set, so to speak, at an inconceivable pitch of intensity” (Fitzgerald 88). Gatsby's only goal in life was to achieve Daisy's love; therefore, he was filled with excitement when his chance came to prove his love to Daisy.
