A rose for Emily Starts off with Emily Grierson's funeral, later on in the story it goes back to show Emily’s childhood and her relationship between her abusive father and her. In the short story, Faulkner uses irony, metaphors and other literary devices to show how emily is mistreated by her father, as well as her loneliness. After her father’s death, she doesn’t want to accept it which puts her at a mental breakdown. Even though she had an awful relationship with her father, when he passed away she still couldn’t believe his death which only made her isolate herself, almost depressed. People thought she was getting ill.

This mysterious narrator covers his or her identity behind the collective pronoun “we”, thus voicing his or her own thoughts and opinions on the behalf of all the townspeople.

I would definitely consider “A Rose for Emily” one of his best tragedy that he has written as it contains suspense and foreshadowing. Foreshadowing is defined as a literary device in which a writer gives an advance hint of what is to come later in the story.

When miss Emily died they enter the house and they found the discomposed corpse of homer Barron and in the side of him a gray hair of miss Emily’s head. As the story states, Emily’s father is an admirable figure in the city of Jefferson. After his passing, the townspeople show the same respect for Emily, as well.

The impression that Miss Emily gives us about her is that she is a “necrophiliac”. Necrophilia means a sexual attraction to dead bodies.

I love William Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily.” It contains literary devices that Faulkner uses to make the short story perfect. The three literary devices that Faulkner uses are symbolism, setting and point of view. These three literary devices are what makes it an enjoyable story to read.

William Faulkner stated that the short story entitled “A Rose for Emily” is an allegory. Given the tragedy Emily experienced, giving a woman a rose is meant to honor her. Although there is no physical rose in the story, however it represents various meaning and symbol to the story. First, the rose symbolizes love and affection that she longs for but cannot have, since she was not able to marry her suitors because of her father. Second, in the story Emily was described as beautiful young woman, it means that rose can also be a symbol for her beauty and youth.

The story "A Rose for Emily¨, tells the years of Emily´s life after her father's death and the towns reaction and thoughts based on her actions and events in her life. After her father's death she isolated herself from the whole town and rejected every man in the town.
