An most common legal court case that has encouraged my decision to pursue a career in law was the Trayvon Martin v.s. George Zimmerman case. This case was about an 17-year-old African American young male adult was shot by George Zimmerman in "self defense". This happened on February 26th, 2012 at night when Trayvon was walking home and Zimmerman called the cops saying it looked like he was up to no good. To sum it up, Trayvon was fatally shot by Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer, in Sanford, Florida. This case was basically related in the racism category due to profiling and stereotypes. It is said that Zimmerman allegedly killed Martin because of his color and what he was dressed in, also known as racial profiling. In an article …show more content…
For example when you see a black male "sagging" you think he has no future, but when you see one wearing a suit and nice shoes you assume hes in college and has a job. During this case I learned that everyone has a different story. What if Martin had only those specific clothes to wear? It was said in an another article that he was " The youngster took an English Honors class, though his favorite subject was said to be math." His teachers said he had the potential to becoming a pilot. Yes, he got in trouble during highschool, but who deosn't? I know I have. What I'm trying to say out of all this is that how could you stereotype someone by their clothes or color? A person could wear the most poorest clothes and be just as smart as the next person in the most expensive clothes. The way Martin was looked at by Zimmerman was wrong because once the police told him to bag off and he didn't... Zimmerman had intentions to take Martin …show more content…
Many people did maches, held signs, and even made shirts. Still till this day, People celebrate Trayvon's death by dressing up in a black hoodie with an Arizona and Skittles and taking a picture. By them doing that means a lot. It shows that not just black lives matter, but all do. Trayvon was black but most importantly, he had a life just like anybody and he didn't deserve for it to be taken in the disturbing way it was. This court case had many flaws but at the end his family got the partial justice they wanted and Zimmerman will still be known today as a wrongful killer. My ending perspective is that Zimmerman should have just left it to the police because you have to think about it, Zimmerman was armed... Martin WASN'T! That gives you a whole advantage over him on so many levels. You know what they say, life isn't always fair and that's true because Trayvon had no fair input in this case at
This is the case of George Zimmerman vs Trayvon Martian is case where George Zimmerman is the shooter who shot Martin down. Zimmerman was a neighborhood watch volunteer when this murder happened. It has been about three years that Trayvon Martin passed away and there still hasn 't been any justice served upon George Zimmerman. Martin was an armed individual making his way home from a corner store through a gated community. Despite the fact that he got shot down by a White man makes a difference on how this case was judged.
By Zimmerman receiving no punishment he and thousands of others were outraged by the results. Courts saying
Case Study The white officer, Darren Wilson had shot an unarmed black teenager who was Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri on Saturday, 9 August 2014. Darren Wilson was a police that involved in arrest a drug suspect in 2013. He had suspect that Michael Brown was involved in drug so that he used an excessive force to Michael Brown. After that he told the authorities that Michael Brown had reached for the gun when they were fight.
One thing that stands out to me is the Emmett Till case that occurred in Mississippi, 1955. Emmett Till was fourteen year old when two white men murdered him. He was going to a candy store to buy some candy and said "Bye Baby" to a white woman. Three days later Emmett Till was kidnapped by two white men and never returned. His dead body was discovered in Tallahatchie River.
Zimmerman's actions could be held against him for originally starting the altercation between him and Martin but, the same arguments could be made about how Martin Responded. According to a complete case overview by Famous Trials, Zimmerman called the police at 7:09 pm to report a suspicious
He was a boy from the north in the deep south where things were not the same. Had he been from the south his death would have been buried and not heard of but that was not the case. Trayvon was also a boy murder for wrongdoings he didn't even know of nor did he have any part in. I believe Trayvon has also been seen as a symbol for things that need to change and for the problems black people still face in the country today.
On February 26, 2012, 17-year-old high school student, Trayvon Martin was fatally shot by George Zimmerman during the night. To this day, there are some things that are unclear. The topic of privacy from the government has always been a controversial in the United States. Some argue that with a society full of cameras and surveillances, it allows for a safer community and reduces crime. However, there are also those who disagree and would rather have their lives be more private and less exposed to cameras.
February 26th, 2012, 17 year old Trayvon Martin was shot and killed by George Zimmerman, a community watch volunteer while walking home from a convenience store. In a 911 call, Zimmerman stated Martin was just walking around and up to no good. The dispatcher advised Zimmerman not to follow Trayvon and wait for a police officer to arrive. George Zimmerman proceeded to shoot Trayvon Martin, killing him. Based on physical evidence and the testimony provided by Zimmerman it was viewed that he acted in “self-defense”.
Then Zimmerman stated that Martin had come and asked if Zimmerman had a problem he then said no. Martin then beat up Zimmerman and spotted his gun and told Zimmerman that he was going to die tonight. Then Zimmerman drew his gun and shot Martin in the back. But according to the prosecutors story Trayvon Martin was being profiled and while talking to the dispatcher Zimmerman stated, “These assholes, they always get away.” (Washington Post) From what he said during the call can hint that he was profiling the general African American community.
This situation was very tragic because someone was murdered for the way they appeared. This watchman has now set a bad reputation for the rest of the community. After the death of Trayvon Martin so many crimes has happened where blacks were innocently killed by white police officers. It is very important that people are aware of their surroundings because anything can happen to anyone. People should not assume anything about anyone because most likely what is assumed is never true.
His attacker George Zimmerman- a neighborhood watch member- reportedly shot and killed Martin merely yards from his home. Similar to Trayvon Martin, Mike brown was an unarmed teenager who was brutally killed by police. “The fatal shooting of an unarmed black teenager Saturday by a police officer in a St. Louis suburb came after a struggle for the officer’s gun…” ( Mike Brown NY Times Article). Hundreds of community members gathered to peacefully rally for a better investigation of his death, and in response police brought K-9 enforcements and weapons, if that isn 't a despicable representation of police force, I don 't know what
Wilson was violent toward Brown and shot Brown several times even though Brown had already surrendered and put up his hands in the air. People who are on Brown’s side claim that a white police officer abused his power, and a sign of race discrimination among police officers. On the day of shooting, Michael Brown and Dorian Johnson went to Ferguson Market and Liquor Store where it was reported for robbery. According to Johnson 's attorney, Freeman Bosley, Michael was involved in shoplifting(CNN). The police released the video of Brown robbing and pushing a clerk of the store from the convenience store 's security camera.
Implicit bias is defined as attitudes or stereotypes that affect our understanding, actions, and decisions in an unconscious manner. These stereotypes are brought upon us by everyday interactions, ideas, and experiences shared with other people. Culpable ignorance is defined as the lack of knowledge or understanding that results from the omission of ordinary care to acquire such knowledge or understanding. While listening to other people you may feel as if they are telling the complete truth and that there is no other side of their story. The time that you decide to not look any further into their stereotypical thoughts is the moment you become a victim of implicit bias and also become culpably ignorant because you know that there may be something
He believed that you are in charge of your own though and you transform it into ingenious of us. Martin knew and learned that even though he was born in a world he did not create, and just so happens the world he was born in, the colored people or his kind were treated as unequal. However from the ideas of Descartes, Martin became a leader of his kind, and through the notion of taking charge in thought through bringing into what can be real. False
Although medical records show that Zimmerman had a broken nose, two black eyes, and gashed on the back of his head, I feel as if the whole situation could have been avoided. Yes, this area was known for robberies, but regardless I do not think that Zimmerman should have approached the situation the way that he did. On the other side of the story, If Zimmerman was calm when he approached Martin and he acted strangely, then that would have given Zimmerman probable cause to question him. The fact that Zimmerman was ordered not to get out of the car, and deliberately approached Martin shows that he was not trusted to be in the situation he was in in the first
