In the article The Sanctuary of School written by Lynda Barry, she talks about how her home life was a mess; and how she felt her only safe place was her elementary school. She mentions how her house was hectic with people moving in and out of it. Along with her parents fighting all day and night. She says that she and her brother were easily forgotten, and slipping out of the house was never noticed. Proven by past experiences such as bullying; kids may not think that their school is a safe place. So this topic is a more debatable topic when it comes to school as a safe place. You can see why some of the facts given by Lynda Barry don’t stack up, in my opinion, and can definitely be questioned by others. How can this issue be defined? …show more content…
I’m sure she wouldn’t want anyone else to have to go through that… but sadly there are. And for them just like her, school is their safe place. Last year at my school there was a bad snow storm. We didn’t get the day off but had a two hour delay. Everyone was upset about it not knowing why they couldn’t have just cancelled school that day. Couple months after this I learned that the reason they couldn’t cancel school is because for some people, it’s their safe place. The schools provide food for those in need and a safe place for those who feel unsafe at home. If we don’t act on this issue many people can go into a slump and feel like no one cares about how their home life isn’t great and that they need to go to …show more content…
Not everyone may feel the same way. Kids can get stressed, have panic attacks, and get bullied at school. One of the biggest problems happening at schools has been going on for longer than we can remember, and the problem won’t really go away. The problem is bullying. He says this, “The issue of bullying has plagued many school systems in the US. We have all read about issues of bullying causing students to take drastic measures to make the pain stop. Unfortunately, many of these drastic measures have resulted in suicide and/or

After few hours reading, “The Sanctuary of School” was written by Lynda Barry, grew up in an interracial neighborhood in Seattle, Washington State. Then, I think this article was interesting to read. I love the way how she told us her past experience by using her own voice to lead us step by step get into her story, then she also shares us about her feeling and how it impacted to her future life. Plus, at the end, she argues that the government should not be cutting the school programs and art related activities. Those programs definitely do help the students and the parents as well.

At school Most Americans believe that a good education saves lives. Even so, something happens when money is required. People start wearing sweatshirts with the words embellished on them “college is for suckers” (Hrabowski). Many people would agree, “It is a well-known fact that in America, public schools never have enough money to run, and colleges and universities are expensive.” The main reasons that schools cut anything are because of budget deficits”(1).
In most schools, nearly half of all teachers are never trained in bullying prevention. Bullies are mostly cruel to innocent young children. Only one-third of students between ages 12 - 18 report being bullied. Students now judge or will be judged by the way they look, dress, speak, or their hair style. Over 2,000 American teenagers turn to suicide because of bullying.

Being safe at school is something that a person shouldn’t have to worry, about but it has become a concern for a lot of parents, teachers, and school administration. Increasing security in high school, middle school, and elementary school would help control and protect the kids from possible threats, as well as creating a safe learning environment and show kids that police officers are good people. Most middle and high schools nowadays have resource officers in the building or some sort of security within the school. In 2007 only 40% of schools in the country had a school resource officer on campus (James and McCallion 11). From a study done by The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice services, they reported that “‘an overwhelming majority of students and staff feel safe at school’ as a result of school resource officers (SROs) being present in school buildings” (Weiler and Cray).

Approximately 160,000 students stay home each day, because they 're afraid of being bullied (www.bscsd.org). According to www.verywell.com, students may be bullied because they 're popular, smart, lacking in self-esteem, and they might be good at what they do. Some other reasons are victims might have few friends, disabilities, different religion or culture belief, physical features, sexual orientation, and racial reasons. Students are bullied because they have high levels of insecurity, depression, anxiety, and/or low self-esteem.
If students don’t have to deal with being bullied, then everybody would be happy. For instance, my sister when she was in school, she used to get bullied every single day. They would call her 4-eyes, they would knock her books out of her arms, push her around the hallway, and then she would come home crying because of how they tortured her in school. She then decided to send an anonymous letter to her principal asking him to please start grading students on their conduct. She also thought that she might add to the letter what “some students” were doing to her everyday so she did.
Bullying in Schools What seems fun and harmless for some students, is painful and degrading to others. Bullying has been a critical issue around schools, but before it was not as dangerous and know as it is now. These do not means bullying was not happening, it means it was not taken into consideration by parents or teachers. They thought it was just peer pressure or a kids game, and sooner or later the kids would be friends again. At one point, bullies think it’s normal to be mean and abusive to other students.
