She arrives home with work-torn hands and tired eyes as she prepares for another day of weaving, spinning, sewing, braiding, and knitting. This image of a child having her life toiled away in a factory is one that Florence Kelley does not tolerate. In her speech for the National American Woman Suffrage Association, she opposes the unfair and immoral treatment of children in labor. Kelley applies figurative language and pathos in her speech in order to push women to encourage men to vote for strict child labor laws, and to convince women of the need for their suffrage. To express the need for the abolishment of child labor and for women’s voting rights, Kelley utilizes figurative language in the form of comparison and rhetorical questions. “In Alabama… a child under sixteen years of age shall not work at a cotton mill… In Georgia there is no restriction whatsoever!” This starting line establishes the subject she is comparing, which is the difference between child labor laws in Alabama and other states. Florence Kelley, a member of the women’s reform movement of the early 1900’s, actively fought against child labor. During this time period, women had not yet achieved suffrage, and children of poor families were sent off to work long hours in factories. Many children were barely educated and spent a majority of their lives in quiet obedience at looming machines. On July 22, 1905, Kelley gave a speech on the topic at the convention of the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA) in Philadelphia. On account of this, Kelley’s audience was a group of like-minded individuals who believed in women's suffrage.
The women have a distinct emotion of being confused, but Florence Kelley isn’t going to evoke more emotion yet, instead she will proceed to manipulate their confusion with logic to highlight her claim. Florence Kelley transitions into an illuminating position in her third paragraph, she says, “Tonight while we sleep, several thousand little girls will be working in textile mills, all the night through, in the deafening noise of the spindles and the looms spinning and weaving cotton and wool, silks and ribbons for us to buy”(Kelley paragraph 3). While she illuminates the problem, she also draws in the audience with her diction. The use of “We” ties in the introduction and shows how while they are fast asleep children are put in danger to provide their basic wants. Everyone is the problem including the women because their inability to vote doesn’t affect their duty to stop injustice.

Most well written and descriptive stories use many disparate tools to make it better. The author of the story The Veldt used figurative language, imagery, and diction to foreshadow the tragic ending of the story. In the end the children use the lions from Africa to slaughter their parents ,and you can kind of guess that the children are planning something evil because of the descriptions and figurative language in the story. The children give off a very negative aura throughout the whole story that leads you to believe that something cynical is occuring.
The Black Walnut Tree Analysis In “The Black Walnut Tree,” by Mary Oliver, we are introduced to a financially struggling mother and daughter arguing whether or not to sell the worthless black walnut tree to pay off their mortgage. Consequently, the two ladies reluctantly refused to relinquish the walnut tree. Throughout the poem, Oliver alluded to the possible reasoning of why the family want to keep such an unnecessary tree and the possible significance the tree may hold to the two women, through the usage of figurative language.

"Everything was suddenly out of tune, like a broken accordion." (Collier 11) This means that Lizabeth is explaining everything she is going through and how her life and emotions are.
