Humans consider polar bears as one of the cutest animals on the planet. Not only are they adorable, but they are also going extinct because of the warming temperatures in the Arctic. But what the public does not know is that the warmer weather is not the only thing killing off these animals; it is truly cannibalism. Rod Sterling's story, "Monsters Are Due on Maple street," reveals this surprising truth in a similar way. The story takes place in an ordinary neighborhood that is supposedly being attacked by aliens.

On January 29, 1991, a vile crime occurred in the Heikkila home in Basking Ridge, New Jersey. Twenty-year-old Matthew Heikkila, the adopted son of Richard and Dawn Heikkila loaded up a “sawed-off 20-gauge shotgun” (Sullivan). He labeled shotgun shells “Mom” and “Dad”, and shot his parents both in the head. Matthew plotted the murder to get the chance to steal his parent’s credit cards, and treat his girlfriend to a birthday dinner. Matthew then left his parent’s dead bodies on the floor of his home and he and his girlfriend enjoyed a night in NYC.

It is up for debate on when this line would be reached and when the violence would be considered too extreme. In these cases, it may be necessary for schools to remove such literature from their libraries and from their curriculum. In Cold Blood is an example of literature that has been deemed questionable by several parents; therefore, banning this novel has been a popular topic of discussion in many different school districts. Derf is mainly focusing on is the mature audience because there are a few scenes in his book that a mature audience could handle to witness. Derf wants to address all the clues that his main character Dahmer was going through that the people who were around him that was overlooking that made him be known as the “The Milwaukee Monster”. Backderf wants his readers to analyze his art work, understanding the different type of tones, and the word choices that Derf demonstrated in his book. Cullen creates a blunt tone in order to get straight to the facts to show who Eric really was. Through his use of rhetorical devices in this passage, Cullen unravels that Eric was not a bullied outcast like so many believe, but a psychopath.

The Worst Crime: Matt’s or Richard’s “Killings”, written by Andre Dubus, illustrates how the death of a loved one may lead to dire consequences for all the parties included. Matt Fowler’s son, Frank, was murdered in cold blood by a jealous soon-to-be ex-husband, Richard Strout. When the death of Frank sunk into the lives of the Fowler’s, Matt believed he had to retaliate in some sort of fashion. The sort of fashion he chose was to seek revenge and kill Richard for his wrongdoings, which he did. Some people believe that the murder committed by Richard Strout can be considered more serious because of his act of passion and his lackadaisical style of living without worrying about his future.

One of the biggest obstacles is the cannibals in this new post apocalyptic world, to the boy and the man they are described and called the “bad guys”. The code of ethics that the man and the boy follow isn't the as the “old world rules” where laws exist, government, and they have to abide by doing right toward others. The code of ethics they follow have to be chosen, and it is a path many don't chose in this “new world”. The man and boy are living just the two of them, not looking to hurt anyone else unless their lives are being threaten and even then the boy doesn't like to hurt others. The man does at time do some things that the boy doesn't like, and can look like he is turning out to become a bad guy, yet it is necessary steps to ensure their safety.

“Killings” written by Andre Dubus is focused on the main character and protagonist Matt Fowler. Matt is the father of three known children in the story, Cathleen, Steve, and his youngest, Frank. Matt had his children with his wife and business partner Ruth Fowler. In the beginning of the story Matt is laying his youngest son, Frank, to rest in the cemetery after he was brutally murdered by the story’s main antagonist, Richard Strout. At the time of his death, Frank was in school and majoring in economics (63) and had a very bright future ahead of him, after all, he was only twenty eight years old.
