The quote above tells about the life of the main character, which helps set up the story because it revolves around her. The time/place of the story. "I felt the warm water slosh against my ankles...It was 6:40 on a beautiful Halloween morning" (16). These three events all lead up to the climax of Bethany's first time being able to surf after the shark attack. "Then it happened. A wave rolled through, I caught it...It's hard for me to describe the joy I felt after I stood up and rode a wave in for the first time after the attack" (181). When Bethany finally begins to surf again after the attack, the mental and physical battle with herself is resolved and it becomes clear she will continue surfing. "But a movie of my life? I can't really imagine it (who will play me?) but I am looking forward to the surfing scenes..." (201). After the climax, a movie is made of her experience which leads to the ending note of the novel. "Maybe I'll pursue professional surfing, maybe full-time college, maybe becoming a missionary. I'm just waiting for God to tell me what to do...I want to do something like I'm doing now---serving God and helping people" (222). This part of the story establishes that she's accepted the way things turned out and is looking at a new life full of different possibilities because she has overcome her limitations. The conflict is solved and her whole life is ahead of her. "But I'm working---we all are---to get over it. To deal with the new challenges. Past is past. On to bigger and better!" Bethany Hamilton is a professional surfer and sponsored by Rip Curl. She grew up in the tropical Hawaiian Islands and learned to surf at the age of five. Within the first portion of the book Bethany Hamilton the main character explains her life and how she was born in Hawaii. Bethany also talks about how she is homeschooled so she can spent the majority of her day in the water. Bethany explained her love for surfing.
Every story whether it is a fiction or non-fiction story, has a plot. The plot refers to the actions, activities, events, or stages of being that the literary work or story depicts. One of the most important parts of any plot are the various plot conflicts found throughout the story. A plot conflict refers to ways in which characters in a story interact with each other. There are four basic types of plot conflict which include character vs character, character vs natural world, character vs the social world, and character vs themselves.

Soul Surfer: A True Story of Faith, Family, and Fighting to Get Back on the Board is a memoir written by Bethany Hamilton, with Sheryl Berk and Rick Bundschuh, about Bethany finding faith after loosing an arm from a shark attack. Bethany is a 13-year-old professional surfer who lives in Hawaii. She says when talking about her start of surfing, “By the time I was seven years old I was able to surf and catch waves without my parents’ help.” (pg. 40) This shows how she starts surfing at a young age.

Literary Terminology The novel, The Book Thief by Markus Zusak unravels the story of a young girl named Liesel Meminger who suffer vastly during the time period where the Nazi Regime had total power over the country of Germany. The genre of the story falls under a historical fiction novel where the character is shown coming of age. As all the event from the novel may not be true but, the whole concept and idea of the Nazi time period makes this book become a historical fiction as it tells the audience about that time period. The Book Thief express several different topics in the duration of the novel but three significant topics in the novel are the topic of family, war, and society as a whole.
There are several themes in the book, each one has a significant meaning to the storyline. The first symbol that describes the theme of abuse of power is government control. The reason that they hold the Hunger Games is because it is a dystopian society and most of the districts are poor and the capitol likes it because it keeps them entertained just because they believe that they are superior to everyone else who lives outside the capitol. To explain this more into detail, the government controls all the districts and all the districts have to follow the rules or else there is a serious punishment.
In the Short Story, “The Most Dangerous Game”, Richard Connell controlled the element of plot by not having any falling actions. Rising action is the part of the plot where the conflict begins, and leads up to the climax, the entire battle would be considered the rising action. Resolution is the last part of a plot diagram and is where the conflict is resolved. The climax is the most important part of a plot diagram, where the biggest conflict takes place. The elements of plot make a big difference in a story therefore, the rising action helped develop the story.

The mood of the novel sets the frame of reference for the audience and helps them to understand the drive of the characters to progress through the story. The author sets the mood by using images of a destroyed civilization due to a large disaster. For example, the opening chapter of the novel features Melanie speaking about her dreams of growing up to become beautiful and marrying a prince.
The novel I read for my science fiction book report was “Catching Fire.” “Catching Fire” is the second book in the hunger games trilogy.
