Summary: Hobby Lobby

Hobby Lobby, I was on the fence about how I felt. I first completely agreed with the Green’s because it is their right to say no to something that goes totally against their beliefs. As the Greens believe that life begins at conception, these contraceptives are killing a baby in their minds and religion. They don’t think of it as a  fertilized egg, they think of it as a little human being that they are paying for their employees to get rid off. For a department to mandate that is totally wrong.

A recent federal lawsuit has been filed by the American Civil Liberties Union’s (ACLU) challenging the constitutionality of three provisions of the Setonia’s Abortion Laws. The three provisions ACLU are challenging are as follows (McCauliff): • Law which prevents state health officials from renewing or issuing licenses to abortion clinics located with 2000 feet of an elementary school (McCauliff). • Law which requires physicians performing abortions to complete 10 hours annually of continuing medical education on abortion procedures (McCauliff). • Law which requires abortion providers to give every patient a copy of her medical records, regardless of whether the patient requests such records (McCauliff).

Opinion: I believe with the ruling. I am on the same page with Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. I agree 100% with his writing for the court, which stated that family-owned companies like Hobby Lobby should not be enforced to recompense for insurance coverage for contraception for workers over their religious oppositions. I believe that this ruling is accurate because it means that the Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993 is efficient and does what it says that it does.

May credited Margaret Sanger and fellow women's rights proponent and philanthropist Katherine McCormick for driving, and funding, the push for an oral contraceptive, with the original intent to give women control of fertility. However, the majority of developers and advocates endorsed the birth control pill to solve "the problems of the world," specifically rising population, and particularly among lower socio-economic groups and in developing countries." Advocates feared widespread poverty in developing countries, poverty resulting from communism, and overpopulation in the United States due to the baby boom.

Elaine Tyler May delivers a concise historical retrospective and critical analysis of the development, evolution, and impact of the birth control pill from the 1950s to present day. In her book, America and the Pill, examines the relationship of the pill to the feminist movement, scientific advances, cultural implications, domestic and international politics, and the sexual revolution. May argues cogently that the mythical assumptions and expectations of the birth control pill were too high, in which the pill would be a solution to global poverty, serve as a magical elixir for marriages to the extent it would decline the divorce rate, end out-of-wedlock pregnancies, control population growth, or the pill would generate sexual pandemonium and ruin families. May claims the real impact of the pill—it’s as a tool of empowerment for women, in which it allows them to control their own fertility and lives. The Hobby Lobby case is an interesting one. I agree but also disagree with the decision made. I disagree because it seems like a way to discriminate against women. The business is essentially trying to make the decision on what is right for that individuals body regarding contraception and if and when they want to conceive a child. “This ruling ignores the scientific evidence showing that the health security of millions of American women is strengthened by access to these crucial services.”

The Right to Abortion On January 22, 1973, in a 7-2 ruling, the U.S. Supreme Court handed down it’s landmark decision in the case of Roe v. Wade, which recognized that the constitutional right to privacy extends to a woman’s right to make her own personal medical decisions — including the decision to have an abortion without interference from politicians (Planned Parenthood). There are many moments in history when Roe v. Wade has been so close to being overturned, yet it is still in place. Abortion should stay legal, or not overturned, for the health of women everywhere. First, this important case took place at the time of abortion being illegal in most states, including Texas, where Roe v. Wade began.

Taylor Hurst Kaiser AP Lang 11 November 2015 Analysis of Margaret Sanger’s Speech on Birth Control Margaret Sanger, an American birth control activist, made an announcement titled “The Children’s Era,’ at the first national birth-control conference in March of 1925. In this speech, Sanger attempts to influence her ideas and beliefs on the importance of birth control and contraceptives to the health of society’s women. She also vividly explains how controlled childbearing would apply to children who would eventually be born.

Griswold V. Connecticut 381 U.S. 479 (1965) Facts: The two appellants Griswold and Buxton were both arrested and charged under the Connecticut Comstock Act of 1879. They both violated this act by providing information and medical advice to married persons on means of preventing conception. They were both found guilty of aiding clients and were fined 100 dollars each.

There becomes a time when one has to stand up for what they believe. Making their voices heard by many, hoping that the message is received in a positive light. Margaret Sanger (1879-1966) was a nurse, educator and a crusader for female reproductive rights. She attended White Plains Hospital as a nurse probationer. Working as a practical nurse in the woman’s ward, while working towards her registered nursing degree (Katz, n.d.).

Women’s rights have been a long struggle in America’s legal system, as well as in the religious world, for many decades and women continue to have challenges, concerns, and struggles today. Fighting for what is best for their bodies such as a woman’s right to contraceptives to control whether she will get pregnant or not was not ideal for religious and personal reasons but would find a worthy advocate in a woman who would dedicate her life for women’s reproductive rights. The right for a woman to have an abortion became a legal battle that went all the way to the Supreme Courts in a very well-known case. It has always been a double standard in what was right and wrong, moral or immoral, towards women than men. A man was looked at with respect

The perfect example of this issue is the Hobby Lobby case (Source #1). The issue started after the company refused to provide healthcare for their employees that support abortions. The government immediately stepped in even though it was the company 's religious beliefs. This decision should have been left to the church.
