Lucy Calkins mentions in her writing that, “Competitive sports are a great way to get kids active. In a nation with an obesity epidemic and a rate of diabetes that continues to grow, physical activity is becoming more and more important. Participating on teams can teach young people how to live healthy lifestyles” (“Get off that Couch and Play! 2014). The quote by Lucy Calkins suggests that sports are keeping children active, and that when a child is participating on a team, they will typically learn more on how to live healthy lifestyles, which is ideal for both the children playing competitive sports and their parents. Another vital piece of evidence is brought up by Sarah Davis, who mentions in her writing that many children who are active in sports are motivated to eat healthier foods, such as fruits and vegetables” (What are the Benefits of Competitive Sports for Youth?” 2014).
At this turn, there was a huge movement to become thin and that it was the best thing for society. This was the first time in society that individuals could be deemed as “obese” for weighing more than the average person. Seid shows this by giving an example of how this was applied to everyday life. She states that the popular belief was that if you were overweight it was because one did not have the desire or will power to become thin. She also states that it was common to make the correlation between being thin and being successful.
History, Depth, and Breadth In 2008 Healthy People 2020 introduced the leading health indicator NWS-9 Reduce the proportion of adults who are obese. This measure falls under the health topic on nutrition, physical activity and obesity. The World Health Organization describes obesity as the ‘epidemic of the 21st Century’ (Specchia et al., 2014, p. 255). The obesity rate had doubled up to 33.9% from 1980 to 2008 when the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Healthy People 2020 released their leading health indicator on adult obesity (Specchia et al., 2014, p. 255).
Abstract A comprehensive fitness assessment provides a variety of information, including a health screening, heart rate, blood pressure, height, weight, and a series of measurements to help determine their fitness level. (Clark, Sutton, & Lucett, 2014) I also take note of things such as past experiences with exercise, and any exercise likes or dislikes. (Clark, Sutton, & Lucett, 2014)
Preventing obesity educating individuals and families through the proper eating practices to prevent childhood and adult obesity. The study of sociology regarding obesity could use the theory of structural functionalism that analyzes obesity in the United States. However, millions of Americans remain obese and overweight which affect the whole body through fatty tissue that causes many conditions like high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, stroke and many types of cancer. Nevertheless, obesity in the United States leads to indirect costs of higher medical and psychological costs of around
Obesity is a huge problem for the United States and it needs to change. According to the American Diabetes Association, more than 3/4ths of the country is overweight or obese. (Marks 22). The obesity issue is growing together with nation’s waistlines. According to the World Health Organization, “Overweight and obesity are defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that presents a risk to health” (“Obesity”).
Our world is greatly dimmed by those of larger body. When roaming the streets, we see every day those struggling to hold themselves up. Being fit and active, when viewing those who aren’t of our stature, it brings shame and depression. The problem of obesity has plagued this great nation since it’s founding. From the founding fathers to the common citizen.
This future discrimination that many of us may face can heighten the fear of weight and constricts what we decide to do to ourselves to maintain these standards as a child, as a teenager, and as an
Firstly, Britt uses directed paragraphs that are led by focused topic sentences. She clearly structures each paragraph by beginning each with a short sentence that sets up the different characteristic of fat and thin people being discussed. This clear structure of her essay allows the reader to easily comprehend her comparisons and take the author’s insight on certain personality traits into account when forming an opinion. In addition, the author’s use of short-structured topic sentences not only sets up the main focus of each paragraph, but it outlines and highlights the various clichés Britt utilizes in her essay. These clichés pertain to the personality traits she says fat people possess and thin people lack; these
Sugar Sugar intake should be taken more serious than it has been. There are too many health issues at risk because of this. Richard persuades the audience in his article “The Bitter Truth about Sugar and Its Effects on Our Health”, to the quality of life or the well being. INTRODUCTION: Attention Step: According to the article “Exercise Makes You Younger,” “Research shows that physical inactivity can cause premature death as well as chronic disease and disability" (54). At this moment, there was no denying the fact that compared to the others, I was overweight. Being overweight diminished not only my physical capabilities, but also my intellectual and academic capabilities. The generalization that overweight students were simple-minded, unhygienic, and socially awkward served as an immovable barrier between me and the other students. Group projects became individual activities, and individual activities became times of silent contemplation. Attending school turned into a punishment as I slowly succumbed to apprehension of being judged.
Literature review Obese people use more stuff: Obese people’s needs cost more. They usually use more goods and services to get their needs than thin people. Obese people clothes needs more materials and work to get it done; t-shirts, sweaters, underwear, pants, socks everything needs more cotton or polyester to make it. Plenty of larger sizes cost more. Karen Teide, author of Knitting Fabric Rugs, said look at catalogs that cater to a wide size range--there are often upcharges for XXL or extra-long, even Wal-Mart charges more for XXL.
