How the Weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation Outweigh The Strengths In 1775 The American Revolution was uncontrollable, with Britain and the colonies, at the time, going head to head fighting for control. During the chaos, the new nation acknowledged that it needed a stable government if they were going to win the war. Their leaders wrote a set of rules to help control the country in 1777. The Articles of Confederation were a set of rules to be the first document that established the functions of their national government after it declared independence.

The United States Constitution was ratified in response to the weaknesses present in the Articles of Confederation. The Articles of Confederation was the first constitution of the United States and it intentionally gave the central government very little power. The colonists had just escaped life under the British monarchy where they had no representation and no way to legally protest the way they were being treated. The colonists were forced to pay unfair taxes without representation, forced to house British soldiers, and many other things that they had no choice in. Because of this experience, the articles of confederation was drafted to make the central government weak and to protect the people from the government.

As it applies to the Articles of Confederation there were many weaknesses in the way it went about governing the United States. For one, the loose federation of the states was too weak to act as a foundation to be considered or act as a central government. In addition the state legislatures had too much power and in turn had the ability to influence economic issues of all kinds. This strong legislature is the same one that allowed for mob ruling and actions by debtors. The Articles of confederation were also weak because the required congress to have all 13 colonies in agreement when a new tax was to be passed.

How did the failure of the State of Franklin demonstrates the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation? First of all the, the congress was divided into 13 states and each state had one vote in congress. Congress handled many problems, like how to make the western lands made by the united states i the treaty of paris. Congress failed to solve problems between states due to taxes and boundaries. Most of the citizens felt like the government was too weak.

Even though they had just fought a war justified by unreasonable taxes the members of the so called governing body that was head of the U.S. at the moment realized that were necessary to run an economy. While they had no way to pay many of the soldiers their promised money for their service in the Revolutionary War, a large group of soldiers didn’t like having it all reposed when they couldn’t pay for their farms because of the war bonds not being paid to them. This is what led to Shays’ Rebellion masterminded by the former Continental Army Captain Daniel Shays. In a failed attempt to capture the Springfield Armory the former soldiers were met by the Massachusetts Militia where they were quickly defeated by a cannon filled with grapeshot and no musket fire was exchanged. This shows how the Articles provided a limited central government that lead many Americans to disagree with the Articles of Confederation.

Overcoming the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation The United States constitution overcame the weakness of the Articles of Confederation and provided for the organization of the new government. After the American Revolutionary War in America, the colonist needed a government so no one could take away their power. Continental Congress adopted the Articles in 1777 and later ratified then in 1781. Two main focuses under the Constitutional Convention was representation and voting. The Debate over the Constitution was mainly over making a stronger government.

Following the Revolutionary War, America had just gained independance from Great Britain and needed to form a new government. The Articles of Confederation were established as an attempt to create a government that was unlike Britain’s. Unfortunately, the Articles of Confederation had several weaknesses. When in the process of repairing those weaknesses, the Federalists and the Anti-federalists formed. The Articles of Confederation were very weak as well as useless to America and because of this, the Federalists and the Anti-Federalists could not agree on a new type of government.

Under the Articles of Confederation, The U.S. government was ineffective, as a result of the little power granted to Congress, along with weak relationships with other nations, and prompting the need for a centralized government. The biggest reason for the ineffectiveness of the U.S. government under the Articles of Confederation was the lack of power granted to Congress. The lack of power granted to Congress led to a disrespect of Congress’s rulings from the state governments. Whenever a law was passed, mainly, the state governments chose to do what they wanted, neglecting the laws and other commands, which ultimately lead to the disunity throughout the nation. As a result of thes disunity, many nations, Britain included, saw the Americans as weak and unorganized people.

The Articles of Confederation was an agreement among the thirteen original states of the United States that served as the first constitution. The Articles had first been introduced by Richard Henry Lee in the Second Continental Congress. Although the Articles of Confederation has made its contributions throughout history, the Articles, however, did not last very long and had been proven inadequate from the very start. I agree with this statement based on the examples and analysis of the Constitution I will soon provide. The Articles of Confederation were written during a time when the American people feared a strong national government.

The Articles of the Confederation was the first government constitution that the United States used, and, although there were strength like the Northwest Ordinance of 1787, there were major weaknesses of the Articles of the Confederation like the following: requiring 9 out of the 13 colonial votes from the representatives from different states to pass a law; having no executive and judicial branch; and the federal government being unable to impose tax revenue onto the states. Such flaws would eventually lead to the Constitution and the repeal of the articles, for the Constitution was a measure to fix the problems of the articles with a stronger government that allowed them to impose taxes and and implement new laws for a more effective government.
