The Most Exciting Time in Baseball Baseball is America’s pastime. The game that once was based on honesty and good character changed to a game of lying and chemistry during the 1990’s. The 1990’s and the early 2000’s was a time in baseball full of monstrous home runs, exhilarating RBI’s, and steroids. During this time, the players loved and idolized the most like Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, and Sammy Sosa were also the ones destroying the great game of baseball. There are numerous big time players that used steroids in the 90’s like Gary Sheffield, Jose Canseco, and Jason Giambi, who also aided to the destruction of the game America so dearly loves. Steroid use puts the honest and hardworking players on the back burner. Many outstanding players of this time period will be left off the Hall of Fame despite their solid careers, they were simply overlooked by the record breaking home runs and padded stats of the steroid era. The use of steroids in baseball is cheating. Plain and simple.

For the fans, the juiced era was exhilarating, but for the game of baseball it was horrifically dark. This era tarnished the name of the great game that was one time formed around the honesty and character of it’s players. Steroid users harmed not only their own careers and chances of joining the brotherhood of the HOF, but the careers and chances of numerous other players who strived to obtain their own ticket to join the prestigious group. The juiced era was ten years of broken records and padded stats. Names like Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, and Mark McGwire, went from HOF bound to disgraces to the name of baseball. These players along with many more decided to try and cheat the game of baseball and take credit where credit was far from due. Sticking to baseball’s foundation of outstanding character and honesty will get a player far in not only life but baseball as well. Winners never cheat and cheaters never
However, from the year Mark admitted he started using his batting average increased by 11% and his on-base percentage of 19%. “Whether Mark McGwire used steroids simply for his injuries or for his injuries and to bat better, it still happened and statistics show that he gained power from the drugs” (Tim). Steroids, being the powerful drug it is, can cause multiple strengths and gains you may not even be noticed. It is possible that Mark seriously does believe that the steroids were only helping him heal and not become a better athlete, but for the ones who are sitting in the bleachers or behind a TV screen to see it more clearly. When you think back to all the times you sat in the bleachers and watched a great athlete grow to an amazing athlete, you may not want to see Mark McGwire as the amazing athlete you watched him grow.
Baseball has always been considered America’s pastime. There have been great players and teams at the face of the game. There have been many times when cheating has been connected to game, and it always overshadows the play. The events of the 1919 Chicago Black Sox cheating scandal caused the game of baseball to change, leading to stricter rules the players had to abide by. No cheating scandal in baseball history has ever been larger than that of the
The Black Sox Scandal Baseball is America’s favorite pastime. People have always thought baseball was a clean game. Until the massive doping scandal that occurred several years ago. However, there was what some called the “greatest scandal in sports history” back in the 1919 World Series (1919 Chicago White Sox).
You could argue that comparing betting on baseball while playing and managing is not comparable to steroid users. That it is comparing apples to oranges, but I’m arguing this, breaking the rules is breaking the rules, at least gambling never improved Pete Rose’s performance in a biological sense. Pete Rose’s stats speak for themselves he is the All-Time hit leader with 4,256, along with
Not only can steroids affect players, but it can also tarnish the name of The Hall of Fame. To me, The Hall of Fame is about hard work, commitment, and dedication. So why let steroids users in The Hall of Fame now? No one
The use of steroids and performance enhancing drugs became prevalent in the 1990s in the baseball social world. Several teams suffered the embarrassment and disappointment of having players investigated for using drugs, Mark McGwire was among those players. During the 1998 season Mark McGwire was chasing and broke Roger Maris’s home run record. Cardinal fans were beyond excited with McGwire’s accomplishment. The fans were devastated when it was reported that McGwire was one of those being investigated.
Most Athletes Do Drugs, But Who Really Cares Athletes using performance enhancing drugs have always been in the media. When a beloved athlete is caught using drugs the media tears them apart. Any one’s favorite athlete could become nothing to them after a drug test. The articles “Cheating and CHEATING” by Joe Posnasnski and “We, the Public, Place the Best Athletes on Pedestals” by William Moller, show two sides of the effects of media as well as fame for athletes. As mentioned, “Cheating and CHEATING” by Posnanski gives its own side to the effects of media.
T.J. Quinn; a writer and former baseball hall of fame voter says “PEDs did change what we saw on the field. A player who used banned drugs did not simply disgrace himself, he altered himself.” There is no shortage of racists and domestic abusers in the Baseball Hall of Fame, however this criteria has not kept anyone out of Cooperstown because it did not happen on the field. Ironically enough, the argument to keep out the likes of players like Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa hits a serious roadblock, when we see how many Hall of Famers have admitted to using “greenies” during their career. Hall of famers Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron have all admitted they used amphetamines during their careers (ESPN).
Steroids can cause many health issues, “including “steroid rage,” the development of male characteristics in female athletes, heart attacks, and greatly reduced life expectancy (The Database Book. 2009).” Steroids could also ban you from playing ever again. The first time a player is tested positive they are put on an eighty game suspension, second positive test will put the player on a 162 game suspension, which is the whole season including postseason, and a third positive test will ban the player from Major League Baseball for life. Steroids also give the player an unfair advantage over other players who are playing with their natural ability. “The sport badly needs to restore the public’s confidence in the purity of competition.
Steroids use at its prime during the late 80’s spanned from pitchers to big meathead clean up hitters. During the late 80’s early 90’s MLB saw a curiously high increase in Home Runs, especially in 1997, Roger Maris home run record was broken 2 time. “From 1998–2001, San Francisco Giants outfielder Barry Bonds, St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Mark McGwire and Chicago Cubs right fielder Sammy Sosa, hit sixty home runs a combined seven times”(NYC Local). This season long home run derby was actually beneficial to the game as popularity shot up and more fans started to show up to more games. This happened because people wanted to come and watch 450 foot moonshots, which is why MLB turned its back on the rumors, and yes they more the likely knew what was going on but when you're bringing in money and more fans than ever then why try to regulate
In baseball today, the common solution to deal with steroid use is to hand out suspensions. As discussed before, in the Biogenesis scandal some of the big named baseball players were handed suspensions that could have been detrimental to their organizations. As the suspensions were handed out, some of the players had already faced the speculation of being connected to steroids. Alex Rodriguez in baseball today has been a common face with the discussion of steroids due to his big home runs and RBI stats. It has been proven that Alex Rodriguez has abused steroids yet he has continue used them.
The numbers in baseball have become a thing to look at, to try and calculate performances and keep track of the records. This interest can be contributed to the growth in fantasy baseball. The caused Mark McGwire to discuss his use of steroids because of the increase of studying the past players’ stats. This still cannot completely tear the idea of innocence away from baseball.
In fact, BALCO’s drugs were legal under federal law”. This disproves the argument that Bonds was cheating illegally because, in both instances, Bond’s never did anything wrong or illegal. In closing, Barry Bonds deserves to be awarded the honor of being in the Baseball Hall of Fame, because of his astounding accomplishments, records, and awards won during his career. Although Bonds began enhancing his abilities with steroids around halfway through his career, his accomplishments should still be recognized as valid because of the legality of the steroids.
Most athletes would do anything to win or be better than their opponents. The athletes that are using steroids are cheating by increasing their strength. According to www.DoSomething.org , most doses are 10 to 100 times greater than the doses prescribed. Punishments should be increased so people stop using steroids and so the playing field equals out (preposition). Athletes should be allowed to use steroids in sports, legally.
Mr. J. Hirby of lawdictionary.org states: Many professional athletes take steroids illegally, which not only represent a potential felony convictions but may also result in permanent career damages. People take steroids because it helps them build muscle quickly and perform more effectively at top levels. However, they are considered cheating by many sports enthusiasts, and they are banned from use because no organization wants to lend its support to a practice that leads to severe health risks for the sake of improved athletic performance (Hirby). This quote stated above describes how it is in-fact cheating to use steroids in pro sports as believed by sport enthusiasts and many fans.
