Stereotypes In The Military

The film I chose to look into for this paper was Super Troopers. Super Troopers takes place in a fictional town in Vermont and references numerous Vermont stereotypes throughout the film. The first prominent scene that exemplifies stereotypes in Vermont is when Throny and Rabbit are having a chugging contest in their small town diner; however, they were not chugging any liquids, but rather they were chugging maple syrup. According to Movoto, which is a popular site for having a quick laugh, Vermonters are notoriously known for worshiping their pure maple syrup. In the novel American War, author Omar El Akkad imagines a bleak American future: a nation divided both North and South and man and woman. Fossil fuel regulations divide the North and South, resulting in a brutal future civil war set from 2075-2095 to which many future American citizens fall victim. However, yet another division exists. Deeply rooted gender roles, much like those found in today's society, create a silent social violence harming the future citizens. The novel follows Sarat -- a girl made bitter through cruel circumstances of an American Civil War -- who destroys social expectations through her vengeful rampage against her enemies.

Guns, violence, ignorance, and marines; how do these all link together? Over periods of time certain groups get stuck with reputations, which are either good and bad. Humans have a tendency to make assumptions or make sense of things, so individuals categorize people into groups. Many of these groups share common characteristics and abilities which can be misunderstood by individuals. This is where stereotypes and misconceptions are formed.

Annotated Bibliography Introduction: Examine different kinds of advertisements and the problem at hand with how they perpetuate stereotypes, such as; gender, race, and religion. Thesis: The problem in society today is in the industry of social media. In efforts to attract the eye of the general population, advertising companies create billboards, commercials, flyers and other ads with stereotypes that are accepted in today’s society. Because of the nations’ cultural expectation for all different types of people, advertisement businesses follow and portray exactly what and how each specific gender, race, or religion should be.

Why do Law Enforcement Officers Receive so Much Hate? In recent history, it has become significantly more obvious that law enforcement agencies and officers are targeted by a vast amount of the community and media. It seems that everywhere we look, there is a story brewing about police brutality or police inequality. Thanks to the available technology more and more people are pulling out their phones and filming law enforcement officers, on duty, losing their cool and attacking the accused individual during an arrest.

In 2013 the number of student veterans doubled, and has since been growing at a rate of 20% per year. The flood of veterans seeking higher education has left many schools playing catch up in order to understand their growing demographic. In 2009, Penn State published a video on their website entitled “The Worrisome Veteran”. The short video was meant as a training guide to show teachers how to manage student veterans. The video depicts student veterans as intimidating, dangerous, entitled and unintelligent.

Then this man knocked at the door and told me that I had to give my baby back to him because my time was up. I felt empty when she left me, I feel like it was my fault. She was a gift from God that I love. The dream ended, and I started crying because the dream was perfect and I wish I could raise her but I can’t. I thank God every day for this gift and to forgive me, I will not be able to raise her.

Human oppression can be defined as the feeling of being heavily burdened, mentally or physically by troubles and adverse conditions ("Dictionary.com"). There are many forms of human oppression and we will take a closer look at all of those. We will also, take a closer look at some real life examples. Furthermore, sexism can be defined as unfair treatment of people based on their sex ("Merriam-Webster.com").

From our previous film showing, High Noon, we got a taste of how the Western genre portrayed Chicano/a characters. The late 1970’s saw a decline of the western, and “with the decline of the filmic western came the rise of the urban violence film” (Cortés 134). The 1980’s and 90’s saw film after film released portraying gang violence, and the Latino gang film was a “natural crossroads for sex, violence, and ethnicity” (Cortés 135). Some see these Latino gang members “as updated, modern variants of the Mexican bandit type” (Treviño). 1993 brought us the film Mi Vida Loca, which shows us the life of teenage Chicano/a gang members living in Echo Park, focused on the character known as Sad Girl.

There are several stereotypes that are associated with women in Law Enforcement There are many reasons I chose the stereotype that is associated with the profession I chose to pursue once I receive my Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice. Being a woman that wants to work in Law enforcement has affected me in different ways. It has also had an impact on my life. It acts as a barrier when thinking critically and it is important to think critically when it comes to different stereotypes so that you won’t get off track.

According to Lippmann, “stereotypes are ‘pictures in our heads’ that we use to apprehend the world around us” (16). Stereotypes can be formed due to effects of media, as Wood describes media as pervasive, powerful and influential (31). Hence, stereotypes can be defined as inaccurate perceptions towards a group of people or community that is strongly influenced by the media. Whether positive or negative, stereotypes are usually false as they are formed based on personal judgments, which are biased or exaggerated. When stereotypes are consistently portrayed in media platforms, they subconsciously form and maintain assumed identities for the stereotyped groups.

Everybody has their own misconceptions of others, but how did stereotypes turn out to create false images for certain groups of people? Misconceptions are views or opinions that appear to be incorrect about a person. The misconceptions that are talked about these days often are from movies and tv shows that are watched everyday by millennials. They create a false image of particular people or things which get believed by young adults and kids. Stereotypes also have an effect on the generations of today because they are general characteristics that people believe represent a particular person or group.
