Star Wars has captured the hearts and imagination of audience members for decades. Star Wars is known for its epic space battles, characters, and the great story of the trilogies. One of Star Wars key aspects is how it blends the two genres of science fiction and science fantasy. Science fiction often deals with technologies or societal and environmental changes that could exist now or in the future; while science fantasy will incorporate ideas of magic and the supernatural alongside more futuristic and technological elements. Star Wars incorporates both science fiction and science fantasy into its films. Star Wars is set in a futuristic universe with advanced technology, spaceships, laser guns, advanced robots, and a multitude of alien species. …show more content…
Throughout the Star Wars original trilogy, there are many different places where there are different elements of science fiction incorporated into the films. One of the largest similarities between Star Wars and science fiction is the futuristic universe with all of the advanced technology. Like many different science fiction films, Star Wars takes place in space and uses spaceships as the main form of transportation. Spaceships are a staple of science fiction; they are something that could be made in the future with the future's advanced technology. More technology that Star Wars shares with other science fiction films are the laser guns and robots that are prevalent throughout the films. Laser guns are another technology that could be created which places them firmly in the science fiction category. The advanced robots in Star Wars are another advanced technology that relates to science fiction. In Star Wars robots or droids, are often used for manual labor and other tasks. The use of droids is prevalent throughout the genre of science fiction and can be seen in different works such as Battlestar …show more content…
The biggest thing that defines Star Wars as a science fantasy film over a science fiction film, is the Force. In many fantasy and science fantasy works there is some mysterious or magical force that can affect the world around it. In Star Wars, this mysterious force is called the Force and is used by the Jedi and the Sith to affect the world around them. In the original trilogy of Star Wars, the Force is used almost like a magic power, like in other fantasy films such as The Lord of The Rings. In The Lord of The Rings, Gandalf can use his magic to see prophecies of the future, this is like how Luke and Darth Vader use the Force to prophesize about what will happen in the future in Empire Strikes Back. The Force also fits a fantasy description because it does not have any possible explanation for its existence. Without an explanation for it to exist, it could not be part of science fiction, so the Force must be fantasy. Another thing that makes Star Wars science fantasy is the number of things that go against the laws of reality as we know them. One of the most obvious things is that spaceships make a sound as they fly through space. Without air, spaceships would not be able to make any sound waves, meaning there would be no noise. Another thing that the spaceships in Star Wars can do is go faster than light. In our universe, it is impossible to go
Jedi Fil Skywalker sits upon his throne high above the frigid glistening waters of Pioneer Pool. His bat vision scans in swift motions from side to side without any double takes. He is the hero the pool deserves, but does not always need. Surrounded by the most elite of lifeguards, he leads a team of superheroes fighting against hypoxic convulsions, killer wasps, and death rays emitted from the scorching sun. In recent history, children have been consumed by the dark forces of poor decision-making; attempts to smuggle modded Super Soakers, and bands of 10- year-olds performing steeplechases around the deck.
“A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...” This quote which is seen at the beginning of every Star Wars movie almost immediately sparks pleasant memories in the minds of everyone, but contrary to what is being said the events of Star Wars are not as far from home as you would first assume. It is due to this closeness that Star Wars could be The American Epic. This closeness is from the inspiration for the events of Star Wars, the values Americans can share with the characters within, and the outlook on the world seen within. George Lucas used many diverse sources for inspiration in his story many of which came from real events in history such as the Vietnam war, Nazi Germany, and more.
The seven Star Wars films features a fictional universe spanning planets and star clusters far, far away; yet all its filming took place on the very real planet of Earth. The original trilogy presented arguably the vastest array of planetary geography. Episode IV: A New Hope opens with the desert planet of Tatooine. The next film, The Empire Strikes Back, introduces the frigid planet of Hoth.

May 25, 1977 the release of Star Wars: A New Hope, just another Sci-Fi movie that was set for failure. Little did the movie industry know , this franchise would be one of the most successful in movie history. Lets not forget the cultural appeal Star Wars would make and is continuing to do so. Star Wars has a found its place in society and is now an established staple film that everyone knows about. With its famous saying “May the force be with you” it is hard not to know where that saying is from.
` In May of 1977, Star Wars: A New Hope was released with overwhelmingly positive reviews and marking a new era in cinema. The writer and director of the film, George Lucas, decided to expand upon the Star Wars universe in 1999 by making Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, with a story that took place before the original film’s story. This movie was made with advanced equipment and cutting-edge CGI (for 1999), nonetheless, the movie was panned by critics and enraged an entire generation of moviegoers. The answer to why this happened lies in the differences between the two films: use of special effects, construction of characters, and complexity of plot. “A special effect is a tool, a means of telling a story.
“The secret to film is that it 's an illusion” -George Lucas. "Good science fiction is intelligent.” It asks big questions that are on people's minds. It's not impossible. It has some sort of root in the abstract. "-Nicolas Cage.
Although, there are elements that sometimes portray it as science fiction. A good example of this would be any of the avengers movies. These movies involve heavy elements of science fiction and fantasy such as time travel, technological advancements, and superheroes. Additionally, there are characters in the movies; Thor and Loki that represent the topic of mythology in science fiction. Thor is considered the god of thunder while Loki is the god of trickery.
The story is already told, just find out how it came to were it did The ‘’Star Wars’’ movie has lots of connections. My first connection is to the Odyssey, in a way I feel you can predict the ending to some ‘’Star Wars films. In the Odyssey the ending is told before the story and then you read on about how it got to where it was. In the ‘’Star Wars’’ it was all layed out and not a lot of suspense.
There’s a room for the ‘realness’ of realistic fiction, but so is there for the romanticism of science fiction like Star Wars and, yes, Halo. I love science fiction. Always have. I will vehemently defend it even as I criticize the genre for its faults (ie: being overrun with white guys named John). Same goes for escapist fiction; there’s enough crap going on in the world that somedays (a lot of days)
