Phillips goal for Spicer’s is “To expand our leadership position being top of mind with consumers in Michigan seeking a boat or off-road power sports vehicle”. But Bob says he wants to “Keep the business family orientated and to continue the family name through the years”. It is obvious that there is two different goals for the company. Balancing competing interests frequently become difficult. Like when Bob first took over the business. Charlie had wanted a sole focus on boats and Bob chose to branch out from there. Bob did what most do in this situation by involving more management in the business. This was to balance out the family views with an outside
Charlie spends the evening with the Peters again, only to be interrupted by his dooming fate. The story explains how Charlie “shook hands with them (Duncan and Lorraine) quickly” and, more importantly, it explains how “Charlie came closer to them, as if to force them backward down the corridor” (213). Such descriptions shows how Charlie is panicking to get the couple away quickly to keep the situation from getting worse. Rather than becoming aggressive towards the Schaeffers, Charlie keeps his composure and simply lets the couple know that he does not want to go out to dinner with them.
An experience that changes Charlie is when Charlie’s father dies. This experience changes him when he says, “When the undertakers came to wheel my father’s lifeless body out to the hearse, it was as if they took my childhood with them. Like other boys, I still wore ‘Knickerbockers’ in the schoolyard. I played ‘queenies’ and marbles too. But once the lessons were over, I returned home and stepped into the long pants of adulthood.

Instead of choosing to work at a “respectable” and honest workplace, Rosella’s Jam Factory, he decides to become a runner for the infamous criminal, Squizzy Taylor. Charlie believed that he would make twice as much working for Squizzy as opposed to working at Rosella’s. Knowing that Ma “...wouldn’t ‘ave any son a mine keepin’ company with criminals,” he went against her to support the Feehan family. Working at Rosella’s would’ve been much for tiring and would’ve had half the income. Why is there any reason for Charlie to reject such an offer?

“Family” is a hard word to create a concrete definition for. If one were to ask three random people on the street, it is likely they will receive three completely different answers to defining a family. The textbook definition of family according to the etymology dictionary is: “Origin in early 15c. “servants of a household” from Latin familia “family servants, domestics collectively, the servants in a household.” The traditional dictionary describes family in a more narrow fashion stating, “a basic social unit consisting of parents and their children, considered as a group, whether dwelling together or not.”
21). Thus, Mackey’s leadership is based on a commitment and belief that “the fundamental precept that profits and purpose should go together—and that companies that marry the two faithfully will outperform the competition over the long term”
The Life of Bob Jake As everyone sets around mourning, they would never know the real life of millionaire Bob Jake. He died a few days ago, and everyone just thought he was a world owner of the oil companies. He had mansions and towers to live in all across the world. The only reason people were at his funeral is because of money.
Many people have different ideas on the definition of family. From my point of view family is much more than flesh and blood, with long lines of generations. A family has a strong bond that cannot be broken under no circumstances. It can be people who you share a connection with based on the constant presence in your life and their willingness to be there for you in easy and hard times. Family to me is a strong and powerful unit that shows and shares love to one another.
