Sound design consists of three components; dialogue, music and sound effects. Each component carries a significant role to enhance the overall intention of the medium in which it is being used for. In film, for example, sound design and location recording is perhaps one of the last aspects of a production to be addressed. However specifically in a film where the dialogue is of utmost importance, it is an aspect that should not be dismissed. Unlike many directors, Quentin Tarantino is a director who puts a lot of care into sound design and this is reflected within each of his films. Tarantino’s exquisite spaghetti western (based in the south but with spaghetti western characteristics) ‘Django Unchained’ is a prime example showing the impact sound design can have on the viewer, as they are engrossed in the experience of a film. …show more content…
It is clear that within Django Unchained no matter how small the action is, it should be audible. Similar to Tarantino’s visual aesthetic, his sound design is not subtle. A prime example of this can be seen within the bar scene, just as Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz) brings Django (Jamie Foxx) to a saloon where Django tastes beer for the first time. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1IeK-V-Dlbo ) The sounds of Dr Schultz pulling the beer, the liquid filling up the pint glass and swiping the overflowing liquid from the pint glass are all clearly heard over the normal surroundings. Moments like this show that Stateman and Cohen took the common approach of sound design for spaghetti westerns where sound is often presented in an extremely exaggerated form. Similarly, the continuous use of whip cracks and high-pitched pistol gunshots show that although Stateman and Cohen like to add their own twist to the sound design, they also understand the genre characteristics of spaghetti western
There are many moments where uneasiness and tension builds without the use of sound. For example, the ending shots of the film are very quiet as Paul reaches out to touch the butterfly. When Paul is intercut with shots of the sniper, tension builds as the audience begins to fear what is coming. After Paul dies, the audience sees the beauty of the world and the horror of the world in the same shot: Paul’s arm, and a beautiful butterfly.
This recreation of the ambient sound also helps place the viewer in the scene which, results in more emotions being
' It 's interesting to see how much Tarantino resamples from different genre movies into his own movies. We all know that Tarantino is a cinephile and a movie nerd. It would be important to start from his use of music in his stylistic titles sequences or opening sequence of every film. All his movies from 'Reservoir Dogs ' to 'Hateful Eight ' have very peculiar audio-visual styles for the opening sequences.
In Edward Scissorhands, Tim Burton uses non-diegetic sounds in order to create more suspense. For example, when Peg was walking upstairs of a big black mansion and was getting closer to Edward the sounds in the scene started to get louder and louder. This shows how Tim Burton wants the audience to sense and get excited to see what is going to be shown next. The sounds in the scenes ultimately help the audience connect more to the film.
Sound is very important in this film because of lot of sound is edited to fit in certain spots including music. During the activist movement, we can clearly hear the hurt in these people voices. Riots, shouting and clapping were all heard in most of the shots along with a voice in the background explaining exactly what is going on. Music was edited into some of the scenes to help give more of a scary or haunted approach. There was also sounds that were in scenes which sounded like someone or something huge is about to take place.
As vehicles drove past, the sound started low and then increased as they came closer and in view. Using the diegetic sounds of the crop duster built up tension as the chase and close calls allowed the audience to
The director of photography for Jaws, Bill Butler, uses cinematography as a mode of visual storytelling, and the choices made regarding shot positioning, blocking of actors and colour palette contribute seismically to the suspenseful and thrilling tone of the film. For instance, the film opens with John Williams’ now infamous two note
Sound is being used to create or sense the mood for the audience. For example, when Kim’s father is outside, diegetic sound is used so the characters hear the baseball game playing in the background which makes the situation exciting for the audience. Edward finishes trimming a bush (the dinosaur) and everyone is amazed. This can appear to create a dramatic and happy effect for the audience. The sound then crescendos to make it seem as if Edward is being cheered on by the crowd.
These all brought a lot of new to the audiences, it is a big different part with other Hollywood films. Due to the focus of instrumental music in the sound performance, like people can hear a lot of tiny knock sound. sometimes it is loud either quiet, there are rich in music language in the Matrix, but the Matrix did not have a specific or high melody theme, and therefore it is not easy for the general music fans to accept the differences. But if we only listen the theme several times, we can find the similar sound effect from these music, like the main Character Neo, there is a main theme when he shows up, sometimes it is different, mostly it is same music. Thus, the film makes extensive use of modern music techniques in the language of music, have such as a luxuriant sound compact sound experiments in the science fiction movie, in order to set a unique style.
Over the past century, film has served as a powerful means of communication to a global audience and has become a vital part of the contemporary culture in a world that is increasingly saturated by visual content. Due to the immediacy and the all-encompassing nature of film, the process of watching a film, is widely perceived to be a passive activity by the general masses. However, quoting Smith in his article about the study of film, “nothing could be further from the truth.” The study and understanding of film as an art form enhances the way we watch and appreciate films. It requires the audience's active participation and interaction with the film in order to fully comprehend the directors' intention behind every creative decision.
Silent movies were almost always accompanied by music, from a multipieced pit orchestra to a single piano or even a guitar. This is why silent film audiences seemed perfectly happy with silent movies. There was also technological difficulty of matching sound with visuals so that everyone in the audience could hear. The problems were synchronisation and amplification. A vitaphone was something that produced the first commercially viable sound system.
Using methods such as these as well additional tactics like a dark background and quiet music enhance the response of the viewer or audience. All of these aspects contribute to the style which is central to successful
Early in the film, the importance of background music and its use can be seen. The music is used to create the mood, whether it be the eerie violin audio that often can be heard at times where suspense is anticipated or the same music to create sorrow for the overall significance of the film. The film being built upon a murder case creates fury and differing viewpoints between the main characters which often can be related to prejudice. The use of details not only makes the murder more interesting but also the overall scene more intense. The detailed dialogue among the characters is so precise it offers minute details such as the witness statement of the time of the crime, the entry way of the weapon, and the witness testifying without her glasses.
To quote Michel Chion “sound more than image has the ability to saturate & short-circuit our perception” (Price,
There are many things that make a film interesting. This include historical context (ex. social, government, econ, etc.) and the theory around it. Films represent their times and everything that comes with it. On the other side, is the aesthetic.
