Everyone who owns a television has seen the “Somewhere in America” commercial at least once, which was published by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. This commercial is full of emotions and most people, “Always change the channel because they can’t take it anymore,” (McLachlan). The most depressing parts of this commercial is the pictures because the dogs and cats are all beaten up and suffering from being abused and neglected by their owners. As a matter of fact, they are trying to make the audience feel sympathetic so they can join the ASPCA. The ASPCA tries to encourage audience monetary donation by using ethos by their tone, logos and pathos from the pictures and the statistics. The intended audience for the “Somewhere in America” commercial is primarily old people and pet lovers. The reasons why this commercial is strongly …show more content…
For example, in the commercial it says, “Every hour an animal is beaten or abused.” This fact is pretty straight forward and it gives you that sense of feeling that you could help what’s happening to these animals and eventually put a stop to it. Another fact that is presented is, “For only $18 a month you can rescue an animal and provide it with food and medical needs.” The logos in this commercial contributes a lot because it adds in some heartbreaking facts that it makes people want to help out. But this commercial should have incorporated more logos, such as statistics. The ASPCA foundation could’ve had some information that showed the effect of people donating money. This would have enhanced the possibility of people donating money because they will actually know that they are helping. Also, they will know that their money is not going to waste. Even though the “Somewhere in America” commercial did have logos, it could have been better so that they could catch the audience’s attention and convince them to donate
This commercial during the 2012 Superbowl by Jeep with a voice over of Oprah Winfrey, definitely did a good job tugging the heartstrings of the viewers. This is a very good example of pathos being used in a commercial. Jeep uses pathos to persuade the viewers to get excited about the war being over and their loved ones coming home. One can clearly tell that this commercial is focusing solely on the United States Army and those that are deployed overseas.
The analysis I made was based on Douglas McGray’s article “Lost in America”. You did a great job starting your introduction in a creative way using a question as attention-grabber. It is an effective strategy to grab the reader’s attention. You briefly summarized the article’s main points; it provides readers a brief explanation of what will be further analyzed. You also established a very solid thesis statement with a purpose, audience and rhetorical device being analyzed.
President Franklin Delano Roosevelt led the United States through some of its darkest times, using his own character to help the country overcome its struggles. In 1929, the market crash drove the United States into a decade-long craze, shaping America as a place of poverty and hardship for ordinary citizens. Throughout the early 1930’s, the United States struggled with the Great Depression and the disconnect it created between the government and the American population. Thankfully, in 1932, Franklin Delano Roosevelt took office. Herbert Hoover, the previous president, possessed a disbelief in the government's involvement in aiding the country in their financial struggles.
This short commercial was and still captivates and influences people to be active and helpful in the campaign against animal cruelty and
Herbert Hoover’s presidency is associated with the Great Depression seeing that eight months into his term, the stock market collapsed starting an economic depression that would leave 23% of Americans unemployed by 1932. Hoover failed to take the actions needed to help the country initially, however in his annual speech to Congress in 1932, Hoover discusses three directions in which the government can take to aid the rebuilding of the economy. When the United States Stock Market crashed in October 1929 and the country began its ten year Depression, businesses and banks began closing left and right. This caused many Americans to lose their jobs and created massive amounts of poverty throughout the country. Prices became inflated and simple,
Perhaps the saddest thing that can ever happen to any friendship is to acknowledge a friend’s death. However, in 1968, when the death of Martin Luther King shocks the world, Robert Kennedy has to quickly control his hopelessness of losing a close friend and release the depressing news of a freedom fighter’s fall. In a chaotic time with intense racism and unstable society, Robert Kennedy’s speech successfully pacifies the world and reduces the possible conflicts with his deliberate use of a powerful speech that unified the world and at the same time remember Martin Luther King’s achievement. In Remarks on the Assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., Robert Kennedy effectively uses ethos, pathos, and parallelism to create strong bonds of unity as Americans and encourage
My favorite ad is #CATmageddon by the organization, Truth. This commercial started running in the beginning of the year and used video of current internet cat memes such as, Keyboard Cat, Roomba Shark Cat and Pirate Cat along with facts and slogans to address Truth 's anti-smoking campaign, "Smoking Kills pets too". The video first presented the fact that cats are twice as likely to get cancer if their owner smokes. This demonstrates the use of rhetoric logos to convince the audience with logical reasoning. In addition, the video also uses pathos, the love and enjoyment people get from watching cat video.
One rhetorical strategy that was evident in this commercial was Pathos. Pathos signifies emotions, assumptions, perspectives, and give the commercial a sense of identity. In the commercial, the setting looked apocalyptic; burning trees, dark sky, and opposite stereotypes. The gloomy setting implies that this commercial would be talking about a life lesson showing if society did not function as one. Viewers alike, may feel like this commercial is depressing or scary because the “message” may allude to what could happen in the future.
In the Budweiser commercial “Puppy Love” it utilizes the persuasion tool pathos for specifically this reason. The commercial follows a puppy that constantly sneaks away to visit his friend a Clydesdale horse (Budweiser Brasil). However, the puppy is always found by a man who returns him to his caretaker (Budweiser Brasil). The story of a cute puppy is already enough to get the average viewer to show an emotional response. Add that to a friendship with a beautiful Clydesdale horse and that is sure to get the viewers’ hearts warmed.
“The only thing we have to fear is fear itself,” (Roosevelt 3). On March 4, 1933 on the east side of the White House capitol, Franklin Roosevelt was inaugurated as the 32nd president of the United States. This address began the 1st of his 4 memorable and effective terms. Roosevelt ran for, and achieved various seats on the political ladder and climbed to the top becoming the president of the United States of America. Through the Great Depression and bombing of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, Roosevelt stuck to business and made decisions that shaped today’s beloved United States.
The logos part took place at the beginning and at the end of the commercial. The logos part was the part that got you to buy their product. The logos part also said about how many people use it in the U.S alone. They said more about it than just that though.
A connection between logos and pathos is very strong through the caption. Although the caption of the image is represented as logos, it is also pathos. This is because when the picture is viewed you get this sick and panic like symptoms because you are now well aware they you could also being digesting the same thing. The advertisement is trying to eliminate the fact that if we don 't start caring about the planet we could be eating plastic bags stuck in fish and other animals. Another way that pathos is located in the advertisement is when the view begins to think about the species eating the trash.
We all hate commercials. They are annoying and seem irrelevant to us. They interrupt us while were watching our favorite shows and there 's no way around not watching them. What many people don’t notice is the purpose of commercials. Usually the storyline of a commercial is not very related to the product being sold.
The copy strategically placed next to the dog’s face is used to guide the viewer’s eye to the next important element, the message “Help Us Help Them” (ASPCA). Likewise, the words “Help Us Help Them” (ASPCA) assist in delivering and clarifying the message of the visual to the audience. Other elements in the photograph, serve to direct the viewer to the next element of importance, such as the chain that serves as a directional line to guide the eye to the words “Donate Today” (ASPCA). These words set in white are intentionally placed on an orange hue background causing them to stand out creating contrast, urging the audience to make a donation. Another element used to support the ad’s message is the
It gives out limited information about the products which leads to people having the wrong views of it. The prescription of drugs have different side effects on everyone and sometimes it doesn’t have any at all (Kramer, 2003). These advertisements
