How the immigration and colonization processes influenced the formation of the Brazilian identity, especially of the city of São Paulo? How migrants, their descendants and the receiving society, made of “Brazilians” and other communities and ethnic groups, interacted and still interact during this process and how these groups identify themselves and each other? It is questions like these, which capture my curiosity towards Social Anthropology.

In this area of anthropology, I found theoretical support necessary to carry out the discussion about the social and cultural importance of food in the context of São Paulo. Concomitantly, the social values of the receiving country does not yet have been adopted by these individuals, so that in the immigration context, cultural and life values are disjointed, creating "a kind of emptiness in which society can no longer exercise control on its members, leaving them at the mercy of themselves "(MATSUE, 2012, p.1137); which can lead to a process of identification and allegiance between individuals that recognize themselves as part of a same group. According to Barth (1998) these identifications are the result of the relationship between the identities defined by others and self-identities.
Therefore, I believe that, identifying in which way the relationship between immigrants, their descendants and the receiving society happened and still happens, how this process influenced the formation of an identity of São Paulo, would allow us to understand a small facet of the identity formation processes in Brazil, in addition to provide greater clarity about the immigration process and the consequent adaptation of these individuals to a new society and how these immigrants influence and are influenced by the society in which they
Michelle’s historical context derives from numerous ideals. One of which she had been unaware of until the year of 2008, when she found out her direct relation to a slave on Friendfield plantation in Georgetown, South Carolina. Her great- great grandfather, Jim Robinson, was one of over 200 slaves on this plantation in the early 1800s (Bond, 2012). “Michelle has said that knowing the truth about her family history has helped her understand her upbringing, and in a larger sense how the legacy of slavery continues to impact the lives of African Americans to this day” (Bond, 2012, p.2). Michelle herself recognizes the importance of the historical context to her own life and the lives of other African Americans.

This article helps us understand what happens when some Portuguese families move to the United States and how they are able to be able to change adapt to the change in cultures. It also looks at how it affects their thinking. Morrison and James describes acculturations as “when groups of individuals having different cultures come into continuous, first-hand contact, with subsequent changes in the original culture pat- terns of either or both groups’’.
The novel “Bless Me, Ultima” is authored by Anaya Rudolfo. This novel is an autobiography since the author utilizes his hometown, Highway 66, church, little villages, the school and ranges around the town to present the story. The autobiography describes the cultural aspects of the Chicano in the rural sides of New Mexico in 1940s. In this essay, Rudolf describes the cultural aspects and landscape of the New Mexico during that particular time with an emphasis on the influential ways of the indigenous cultural aspects. Antonio Luna Márez is this novel’s main protagonist who in this story describes the environment in which he was brought up and all those that were involved in his upbringing.

Immigration is deeply rooted in the American culture, yet it is still an issue that has the country divided. Marcelo and Carola Suarez-Orozco, in their essay, “How Immigrants Became ‘Other’” explore the topic of immigration. They argue that Americans view many immigrants as criminals entering America with the hopes of stealing jobs and taking over, but that this viewpoint is not true. They claim that immigrants give up a lot to even have a chance to come into America and will take whatever they can get when they come. Identity speaks of who we are as individuals but it also comes from two different groups: social and cultural. These groups are connected to power, values and ideology. Social identities are related to how we interact with people and how we present ourselves. Meanwhile cultural identities relate to society in whole such as religion, values, etc. In this paper I will talk about the dominant and subordinate identities.
At a time of heated and conflict-ridden debate over immigration, Juan Gonzalez, an American progressive broadcast journalist, wrote his second book Harvest of Empire to enlighten his readers about the struggles of daily life as a Latin American. In this book about the history of Latinos in America, Juan touches on many key aspects that embrace the struggles of Latin Americans that are vague to many Americans today. Using different methods to portray his information obtained in his found sources, and unique sections to help organize the information depicted, Gonzalez makes an argument that the overflow of immigration from Latin America to these shores and the enormous demographic shift that Gonzalez calls the “Latinization of the United States”

It is Nelson Foote who has used the term first in the academic arena and the word has become popular in the second half of 20th century. During this period, the concept of identity has been deployed in numerous ways in the field of psychology, social sciences, anthropology, humanities and literature. Several academic debates have been used as platforms for refining this concept and contributed to this field. Introduction The concept of identity has been a notion of significant interest not just to sociologists and psychologists, but also to individuals found in a social context of perpetually trying to define themselves. Often times, identities are given to individuals based on their social status within a certain community, after the assessment of predominant characteristics that said individual has.
