This shows how Equality starts to become an individual and how he's able to separate himself from others in his community. He knows he posses greater qualities from the rest of his brothers and is now able to see that those qualities are his alone. In the story there's a point at which Equality finds a book from the unmentionable times. He finds a word that is used to divide people into individuals. The word “I”, from that point on he no longer uses “we” to talk about himself.
Running into a problem he soon finds himself in the Uncharted Forest, unsure of what to do while alone. During his time of exploring he is found by the Golden One Equality learns to explore the greater things and be an independent person. First, Equality 7-2521 introduces himself, explaining his sins and the possible punishments he could get for it. The Teacher’s would constantly remind him of how the evil was in him, all for being taller than his brothers. When you would think badly you were forced to repeat “We are one in all and all in one.
Equality performs science experiments every night in his newly discovered tunnel for 3 hours each night. He did this with a few other people for two years. In this time he made a discovery that changed him forever, electricity. He was cutting open a frog and his knife accidentally touched the copper wire the frog was hanging on and the frog shook. They tested it with the candles blown out, “Darkness swallowed us.
Equality also talks about the Home of the Infants and the Home of the Students. He talks about how much he loves the Science of Things and yearns to learn more about how things are made. He asks so many questions that the Teachers restrains how many he may asked, “We asked so many questions that the Teachers forbid it,” (23). Equality was determined to learn about everything around him and how everything worked, he asked questions after questions that no more questions where allowed. Equality eventually finds out his life job as a Street Sweeper, he meets a woman named Liberty 5-300 working in the fields.
Sin is one’s belief of wrongdoing. Not everyone’s view of sin is the same. In the novella Anthem, by Ayn Rand, Equality 7-2521’s believes individualism is a sin (in the beginning). His viewing is wrong because individualism is what drives humans to differ from one another, and is overall a good thing, not a bad thing. However, Equality views it as a bad thing because he has been “brainwashed” through his entire life by society to believe that.
What does Equality’s motivation lead him to. Equality’s curiosity and making the world a better place led him to his individualism. Where he lived his community was made up of collectivism.
Equality’s main motivation is to discover new things and new ideas in the world around him. Early on in the novella, Equality finds a tunnel from the Unmentionable
Robert Frost once said, “If society fits you comfortably enough, you can call it freedom”. Most people can relate to this quote, but what if an individual does not agree or feel comfortable in his or her social system? In the novella Anthem, Ayn Rand shows her willingness to leave an unjust society through Equality leaving his community, purposefully breaking laws, and pursuing his discoveries. The first way Rand proves that she does not agree with her society, is through the main character of the book, Equality, running away from his society. Rand states that Equality’s actions that she will do what it takes to leave her society.
Equality is something people want till people actually have it. Equality often limits a person’s abilities and disables to do something for themselves or inspire themselves. Equality's, the main character in the book Anthem, the primary motivation is proving that he is smart enough to become a scholar. Equality has a right to be motivated in this way since he believes that he can help the society so he is giving into the collectivism. I think that if everyone was motivated in this way, there would be a more progressive society where people sought to improve themselves and society at the same time.
With all of his experience that nobody has known in at least a century he is extremely capable of deciding whether of his choices are right. His personality keeps him from giving up hope and giving up on his society and his companion but keeps him curious enough to keep searching for something better in life. Equality has aged to the point where he thinks he needs to change the world and will try to do so. Most would believe that Equality’s actions were righteous and could not contemplate that his actions were
In the beginning, Equality was devoted to the Council and their reasons behind the social structure. Equality begins to experience emotions that separates himself from his brothers and he
Collectivism and Selfishness in Anthem Imagine living in a world where everybody's lives are completely mapped out by the government. Where every decision is made without the input of the citizens it affects. In the novella Anthem, Ayn Rand depicts a completely collectivist society, where every idea, action, and invention is purely for the benefit of society as a whole. Everything is done with the entire population in mind, and individuality is extremely frowned upon.
Equality does this by when he first falls in love with Liberty, he is obsessed. However, when his invention is rejected by the council, he starts to realize he doesn’t need to be in a group and in result, starts to love Liberty less. When he understand individuality fully, he becomes very selfish and doesn’t care for Liberty at all and thinks of her as an object. Equality felt he needed to be with a group and with Liberty. Through his journey he discovered that he doesn’t need to be with a group and can be independent.
However, since the council fails to recognize this idea, Equality has two options: either face imminent execution or flee. By choosing the latter and fleeing into the Uncharted Forest, Equality finally is, in a physical sense, free from the rule of collectivist society. Now he is alone in the forest, alone with his thoughts. He decides where he goes, when he sleeps, what he eats. However, he is still not fully
