Similarities Between Rome And Han China

Unit 7 is a rather long section covering both Rome and China 's powerful and expansive empires during the time period 300 BCE - 300 CE. The Han Dynasty and Imperial Rome were very similar in their unprecedented scale and duration. Although they did operate in differing ways, for example, Rome relied on slaves to expand its workforce, while the Chinese 's economy lived off of free peasant farmers. The Chinese benefited from having an overwhelming population that would benefit the bureaucracy and supply political stability for the Hans. When it came to the Roman Empire, religion did not have the same impact that Confucianism had on the dynasties in China.

The two empires had different ideas of culture in relation with the people and their viewpoints. The Chinese had a defined hierarchy. Whereas the Romans had a weaker not as defined hierarchy with no equivalent religion to Confucianism. Family was the foundation in Chinese culture, the Romans lacked this particular quality. Both empires were highly focused on territorial expansion but with the expanding territories more emphasis was need to be placed on a well rounded military in order to maintain full control. The Roman empire;s military was very focused on the skill and quantity of the armies. The size of the arm scared the citizen into maintaining obedience to the emperor. Unlike the Roman the Han required men to serve in their military. Because of China’s isolation the risk for invasion from enemies or barbarians.

The Han Dynasty and Roman Empire were prominent globalizing empires that created lasting legacies for many years to come. The empires were able to do what most have failed to do previously. They were both able to successfully incorporate their enemies and neighbors into their realms. In doing so, they were able to amass a population of about 60 million. Even though both empires had many things in common, they exhibited some key distinguishing differences.

In the First Millennium, the Ancient Civilizations of Han and Rome societies had clear appreciation for the technological advancement though the Roman concentrated on the mathematical and scientific advancements, while looking down upon the laboring tools invented to increase agricultural efficiency that were appreciated by the Hans. Roman concentrated intently on mathematical and scientific advancements after they increase their slave labor which the Roman cared little about. However, Han highly prized agricultural tool for it efficiency and its ability increase production. Though many Western civilizations have influenced the way we live our lives today, many forget the progressive movements of early Classical and Contemporary Oriental cultures. Two of these cultures that are still revisited by historians today were the epitome of early Asian civilization and very influential guides for cultures to come. Han China (206 B.C.E.-220 A.D.) and Gupta India (320 C.E.-525 C.E.) were two dynasty-based civilizations in the early conception of Southeastern Asian rule. Though both had a very similar class based society and both had to endure outside invasions as well as internal conflicts, they both had unique, and future utilized, ways of maintaining their rule. Both of these cultures needed to keep order and stability within their borders to maintain a prosperous society.

The conservative Romans had their own system of values and, because they were able to preserve them during the centuries (no matter how many kinds of rulership changed), that provided continuity of Rome. The relationships between classes (patrons and clients) were a factor that provided stability. But a gradual change has happened, as the gap between rich and poor widened. The changing economy led to more poor people, and the higher class could not control them anymore.

China on the other hand had more problems in its bureaucracy and civic unrest. For example, some peasants who had lost their farms had to sell their children into service. A third difference is that as previously stated, China had a successful revival while Rome did not. Rome divided and the Western half survived but was diminished by attempts to regulate the economy and decline tax revenue ’s.

China, up until the Qin Dynasty, consisted of independent states controlled by kings fighting each other for land and power. This time period was called The Era of Warring States, which lasted two hundred years. After this time, the Qin Dynasty rose to power. They conquered all other dynasties, and established a centralized government, unifying China for the first time. The dynasty that succeeded the Qin, the Han, continued the centralized government and they started a westward expansion that would encourage trade and cultural diffusion.

During the period between 1450 and 1750, European traders started to get more involved in Chinas and Japan's politics. One similarity between China and Japan in their relations with European traders is that in both countries european traders were welcomed at first, however the relationship soon turned sour. In China, the Qing dynasty sold limited trading privileges to European powers but confined them only to Guangzhou. The British was not satisfied with this arrangement, so they asked for more trading rights. As a result, In a letter to King George III Emperor Qianlong states that the chinese had no need for British products.

In various ways, Han China and Imperial Rome were politically similar yet also had their pair of differences. Two very well-known classical empires, both had highly advanced political systems for their time; Han China, lasted from 206 B.C.E to 220 C.E, and Imperial Rome, lasted from 31 B.C.E to 476 C.E. Many think these two empires where built with no previous influence, however; the Roman Empire had retained many aspects from the Roman Republic, and Han China from the Qin Dynasty. During their peaks, they controlled the majority of the world 's population because of their constant expansion of conquered lands, while their structure of administration and rule influenced many empires and future societies around the world. Aspects such as these, ultimately, led these two empires to be, arguably, the most influential societies in the world; as their legacies still live on today.

Filial piety has been one of the most important virtues of Ancient China; even now, the Chinese still hold it in high regard. It encourages one to pay respect towards one’s parents and elders, including the deceased. Though it may seem like tending to those who nurtured you from the beginning of time is an instinctive ability, the Chinese took it even further than that. Ebrey relays in one of the sections in her collection of translated works, namely The Classic of Filial Piety, that filial piety was the key to maintaining peace and harmony in the world. Without it, the world would be in chaos.

Islam is a religion that controls their follower's daily lives. It quickly spread throughout many large and small civilizations all throughout the world. Two civilizations that Islam affected were the Byzantine Empire and China. The Byzantine empire was the section of Rome that remained after the fall of Rome and was a very successful civilization in its time. During the rise of Christianity, the Byzantine empire became a Christian-based civilization and used the church to solve its political and economic problems that sprang up after the fall of Rome.

The Han Dynasty in China and the Roman Empire shared many similarities and differences when it came to political rule and the nature of their political authority. The most significant difference between the two is how the Han dynasty enacted policies that were shaped to counter the wrongdoings of the previous Qin dynasty, whereas the Roman Empire enacted policies shaped to create and promote peace and stability. The difference in the two empire’s coming to power was to account for their variance in political rule. After the Qin dynasty, the Han ruled China for four centuries, enacting numerous political changes and governing one of the most efficacious dynasties in Chinese history.

Although both Han and Rome both made huge accomplishments in technology they had very different views on technology. The Han dynasty viewed their tools as huge advancements and tried to use them throughout all the classes in societies because they were much more open and positive towards poor workers than the Roman Empire which had great technologies but they did not appreciate the lower class workers which lead to a negative view on technology (run-on sentence). As Roman laborers were often slaves the technologies and tools they used were often neglected and not noticed while the upper class advancements in math and science were the only technological achievements that were noticed. The Hans had a society heavily based on agriculture. New tools and technologies created were often to increase agricultural work and output which were immediately used by the poor which were the main agricultural workers.
