What does Martin Luther King, Thomas Paine and Henry David Thoreau have in common? They stood up and made a difference by protesting. All three of these people protested different things at different times but all three had one common goal: unity.
Martin Luther King protested civil rights for African Americans. He was the dominant leader of the United States civil rights movement. He was inspired by Mahatma Gandhi and believed non violent protests were most effective. His first civil rights breakthrough was in 1955. When Dr.King proposed a citywide boycott of buses after Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white man. The boycott was extremely effective. In 1776, he wrote his first book after the battles of lexington and concord. He protested in this book that the colonies should be independant and encouraged American soldiers to keep doing their best. He supported his protests with reasons why the American people who were on edge of supporting the king or colonists to root for the colonists. The book “Common Sense” turned into a very big propaganda piece for the revolutionary war. Paine then wrote a series of 16 pamphlets from 1776-1783 called “The Crisis”. The series protested that monarchy was ineffective for the colonies and stated that independence was a natural born given right. Later on in 1791, Paine wrote “The Rights of man” in correlation to Edmund Burke's book “Reflections on the revolution in France”. In Paine's book he stands and supports the revolutions in France. He also supported the abolishing of France's monarchy and building a democratic government. After writing his book, Paine had to flee from incarceration by the english and went to Paris. During the reign of terror he was imprisoned, where he wrote his best work yet “The age of reason”. Civil rights has always been and will always be an extremly controversial topic. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcom X are both large figure heads in the progression of civil rights throughout the United States. Both of these men took very different aproaches towards civil rights; each benefiting the progression in many different ways. Martin Luther King Jr. taking a more subtle and less aggresive approach, compared to Malcom X's violent and aggressive approach. Although, they both took different approaches their work has many different benefits to the work they performed, but overall King had more of an impact on American society.

Henry Thoreau was a transcendentalist and was also a famous author where he wrote during the transcendentalist time. He had a speech called “I Had A Dream" Whereas Henry Thoreau and Martin Luther King Jr are different as Henry Thoreau didn't pay poll taxes and was an author of the 19th century, while Martin Luther King Jr was taking part in the civil right marches and role model in the 20th century, they are also similar as they both spent a day in jail, were transcendentalists, and well educated.
Henry David Thoreau in “Civil Disobedience” and Martin Luther King, Jr. in “Letter from Birmingham Jail” agree that civil disobedience is necessary if unjust laws are in place. Thoreau and King both write at one point from a jail cell, and both essays are written during a time when they felt there was injustice in the government. Both men realize that there is social injustice taking place in their eras and wanted change to happen.

Common Sense is a pamphlet consisting of forty-nine pages on why Paine believes the thirteen American colonies should break off from Great Britain. Throughout the Pamphlet, Paine creates a political argument in an attempt to rally the people together to fight for independence.

The Declaration of Independence contains a list of grievances against King George III and justifications for the assertion of the right for independence.
