The most important characteristics of a hero are courage and determination. Fredric Douglas and Atticus Finch are both excellent examples of heroes. Fredric Douglas and Atticus Finch both show traits such as courage, determination, and kind hearts. Through their actions they inspire others to have these same traits. One thing that sets heroes apart from average people is courage. Courage, the ability to endure fear or pain with strength. One of the most difficult things Fredrick Douglass had to do was escape slavery he felt,”The intense desires, now felt, to be free, quickened my present favorable circumstances, brought me to the determination to act as well as to think and speak.” (Douglass 95). Douglas’s need to be free helped him fuel a passion to be intellectually and physically free. Even the harsh conditions of slavery Fredrick Douglass endured helped him to find strength within his own hopeless situation. Determination means trying to reach a goal no matter what setbacks are in place. ”I was ready to work by night as well as by day”( Douglass 116). Determination is demonstrated in the text by the effort Fredrick Douglass is willing to put into freeing himself and others of slavery. There have been many powerful leaders in this country, some fictional like Martin Luther King Jr and some non fictional like Atticus Finch. Martin Luther King Jr is famous for his “I Have A Dream” speech and Atticus Finch is in Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird. Both men share similar traits like, they both have encountered hate from there society. Martin Luther King Jr and Atticus Finch make many people change their views on racism by giving strong speeches.
As I read To Kill a Mockingbird I couldn’t help but notice the similarities of Atticus Finch and my pastor, Scott Bollinger. I wanted to experience how it felt to be in Atticus’s skin. I feel that Pastor Scott portraits similar characteristics to Atticus. Both Atticus and Scott seem very humble, soft spoken, display a calm demeanor, and turned the other cheek to avoid quarrels. These men respect everyone without reflecting on color, class or gender.
Douglass' intelligence, determination, and courage set him apart from his peers and contributed to his successful escape. The desire for freedom and the desire to reunite with family members were powerful motivators for slaves who attempted to escape, while the fear of punishment and the lack of resources and support prevented many from trying. Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln are the true definition of heroism because they sacrificed their lives for the greater good and benefit of the public. “This man shall be remembered. Oh, not with the statues’ rhetoric. Not with the legends and poems and wreaths of bronze alone, but with the lives grown out of his life, the lives fleshing his dream of the beautiful, needful thing”-SB pg70. Firstly, a hero must possess courage. This attribute is crucial because it enables a hero to stand up against the forces they are trying to defeat. Secondly, heroes must have the ability to protect others. This is vital because people can only feel safe if they are safeguarded from harm.

Racism is seen all over in this novel, indeed Atticus fight against racism but Maycomb is the place where white are dominant and black are under ruled as well as unjustified all the time. In the novel, in order to prove himself in regards to racism, the author use an example of Tom Robinson, who was charged with guilty of a sin which he have not did. The title of the novel” To kill a Mocking Bird is also relate to this issue, which convey the message to kill an innocent and never harming bird is a sin. In Maycomb the black people used to kill and suffered without any reason, so relation can be generated black man as a mocking bird and to take away their basic right is similar to kill them. Although he faced many situations that tried to make him change his mind, he refused to do so. Believing in what he did, Atticus didn`t give up although what we faced.
On July 10th,1858 Abraham Lincoln once said, “I leave you, hoping that the lamp of liberty will burn in your bosoms until there shall no longer be a doubt that all men are created free and equal.”. Lincoln was elected president twice between the start of the civil war and the end of it mentioned in his 2nd inaugural speech about the past present and future. Frederick Douglass who was once a slave learning to read and write himself but in the early 1840s started protesting for equality giving an idea in his speech “What, To the Slave, Is The Fourth Of July”. Determination is a word defined as “firmness of purpose; resoluteness” (Dictionary.com). In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, determination soaks into the mindset of a select few characters in a town named Maycomb, Alabama, during the 1930s. The few characters with the asset of being determined are Bob Ewell, an enemy of many, Tom Robinson, a hardworking man, and Atticus Finch, a greatly appreciated person who sticks to his beliefs.
Obviously, Atticus felt discouraged because he has worked so hard all for
