Silence In Khaled Hosseini's The Kite Runner

The plot of novels is usually driven forward by one or more underlying themes that surround the majority of the actions that the main characters take. These themes range anywhere from seeking forgiveness to seeking revenge. In Khaled Hosseini’s award-winning novel, The Kite Runner, we follow the life of a young Afghani boy named Amir, who makes decision and acts in ways that not only impact his own life, but also drastically change the life of the one’s surrounding him. Many of Amir’s actions can be attributed to the main underlying theme in this novel, cruelty. We see Amir go from being the victim of perceived cruelty, to being the one causing the cruelty, to the one fighting the cruelty at the end of the novel.

However, after the competition Amir "watched Hassan get raped" which is something no one should ever have to witness (Hosseini 82). Amir backed down when he witnessed Hassan being raped and just let it happen. Amir standing witness to Hassan 's rape and leaving him to be taken advantage of by Assef shows Amir 's cowardice behavior and selfishness. Another low that Amir goes through is when he throws pomegranates at Hassan in the limited hope he would reciprocate his acts. Instead Hassan sat there confused and takes another pomegranate and "crushed it against his own forehead" to emphasize his loyalty to Amir (Hosseini 88).

In “The Kite Runner” by Khaled Hosseini, the book has brought up two suggested themes. One theme is related to class distinction and another theme is related to loyalty. Together these themes in chapter 7 show the idea that class distinction creates a divide between people and that affects how one is loyal to another. The first emerging theme comes out when Hassan is being assaulted and Amir does nothing to stop it. He justifies this action by saying, “He was just a Hazara, wasn 't he?"(77).

Loyalty and support is all Ali and Hassan provided to Baba’s entire family from the beginning. Ali has done everything for Amir from making his breakfast to getting his clothes ready in the morning. In addition, Amir made the wrong decision as Hassan and Amir are basically brothers.
