Should teens read a book that contains slurs? In many schools around the world, the book To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee has been used to teach students about our past and other very important details about racism. However, some of the schools disagree and banned the book due to racial slurs, rape, and racism. In this essay, I will be talking about why schools should keep teaching teens the book To Kill A Mockingbird.

To Kill A Mockingbird should be taught to teens because it shows the coming of age of two children and the book is seen through the eyes of a little girl. In chapter 4 we can start seeing the change in scout, “Rather than risk a tangle with calpurnia, I did as Jem told me. For some reason, my first year of school had wrought a great change in our relationship.”(pg.38). This quote shows how scout has matured and dosen’t start fights or problems with others. Scout’s relationship with her brother is also changing. Chapter 12 shows Jem’s coming of age moment at church, “Jem said, ‘Lets go home, Cal, they dont want us here-’ I agreed; they did not want us here” (pg.136). In chapter 23 it says, “This was not good enough for Jem. ‘No sir, they oughta do away with juries. He wasn’t guilty in the first place and they said he was.” (pg.251). This quote shows how even thought they all knew Tom was innocent they still pled him guilty just because he was of color.”In our courts, when its a white man’s word against the black man’s the white man always wins” (pg.251-252). In this quote it also shows that even if the black man is innocent he will always be guilty due to the fact that he is of color.
