Should To Kill A Mockingbird Be Taught In Schools?
"Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird"(Lee 90). This quote from Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird may seem familiar because most high school students read To Kill A Mockingbird in the ninth grade. This quote emphasizes the idea that it is sinful to harm anything so pure and beautiful regardless of its look. It symbolizes the prejudice that exists in our society. Many educators, parents, and writers, believe that high-school students should not be told to read To Kill A Mockingbird, but To Kill A Mockingbird teaches a valuable lesson to students. It recognizes the interconnectedness of race, class, and gender. Many reporters say

It helps the student understand what the effects of their actions and words could have on others and it teaches an invaluable lesson. Throughout To Kill A Mockingbird this is not the only lesson taught. The lesson of courage is taught as well. Courage is taught in many ways, such as when Atticus, a white man, defends a black man named Tom Robinson. Atticus knows he will get backlash for this, but he does it anyway. He shows his children many examples of courage such as when he shares Mrs. Dubose's determination to die without being on Morphine. These lessons stick with Scout and her brother Jem. Specifically Jem. When Jem sees his sister getting attacked, he risks his life to save her. Jem uses courage he learned from his father and To Kill A Mockingbird can teach students reading it to use courage as …show more content…
Many students around the world can be getting knowledge about a time they are unfamiliar with, and that is something that can not be lessened to fit a curriculum. Reporters that are against the reading of To Kill A Mockingbird typically say that other books can be used to teach about racial injustice and they may give a more realistic and exact example of what happened, but every person will have a different view and perspective. Scout's view shows a perspective of a child. It can relate to the students better and make the read more engaging, For example when Scout talks about the excitement of finding a small item in a tree. She says, "We ran home, and on the front porch we looked at a small box patchworked with bits of tinfoil collected from chewing gum wrappers" (Lee 39). This kind of excitement will not be shown in a novel told from the perspective of an adult, and that is why To Kill A Mockingbird is a sensible read for
Should Harper Lee's How to kill a mockingbird book be a part of the school's required book curriculum? The issue with the book is the language and the time the book takes place and how black characters are treated in How To kill a Mockingbird. How to kill a mockingbird should not be a part of a school's curriculum in today's world. Why should How to kill a MockingBird not be a part of the school's curriculum? First off because the book is outdated and it does not represent our society today.
To Kill a Mockingbird demonstrates that courage means standing up for what is right, no matter the cost. One of the most significant characters who demonstrates this is when Atticus tries so hard to help Tom Robinson even though he knows that they won’t win. A quote that best shows this is, “Atticus, are we going to win it”
In To Kill A Mockingbird courage is a very apparent in Harper Lee’s message in the book. A good example of this is, according to Atticus Finch, one of the main characters in To Kill A Mockingbird, "Courage is when you know you're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. " This is exemplified when Atticus takes the trial of Tom Robinson, but we’ll get into that later. Also when Boo Radley fights Bob Ewell in the woods for Scout and Jem, and my last example of when Mrs. Dubose dies in pain to not become a morphine addict. In To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee proves that you should always fight for something you believe in, even if it is destined to fail.
This quote from To Kill a Mockingbird highlights the importance of empathy and understanding others' perspectives, which is a key theme of the novel. By reading this novel, students can gain a better understanding of the ways in which racism and prejudice have shaped our society, and they can learn to empathize with those who have experienced these forms of discrimination. Another reason why To Kill a Mockingbird should be taught in schools is that it helps students to develop critical thinking skills. "I think there's just one kind of folks.
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee has been the source of much controversy recently as to whether or not it should continue to be taught in schools. Although To Kill a Mockingbird isn’t the best book to teach about racism because the black characters are not fully developed and it can easily be misinterpreted on how to deal with racism, it has strong themes of empathy and teaches many great and important morals through Atticus. Teaching about racism and how to deal with it is an extremely difficult topic, and the novel doesn’t get it quite right. There are many black characters in the novel, but none of them are fully developed characters and are more off to the side. For example, theater critics say that Calpurnia is a much more dynamic character in the Broadway Production of To Kill a Mockingbird compared to the actual book.
For example, Reagan Boseley is a sophomore in high school who wrote her views on TKAM she states “ ‘To Kill a Mockingbird teaches children in schools about oppression, and it’s vital that kids learn this so we don’t repeat the same mistakes we have made in the past,’” ( Why Should We Continue to Teach To Kill A Mockingbird in Our English Classes?). This quote does not give any evidence on why kids have to go through oppression because TKAM shows characters like Boo Radley who have gone through oppression and it didn’t help him in the long run because society still misunderstands him. Another weak excuse that is used to show that To Kill a Mockingbird should still be read in schools is “ ‘To Kill a Mockingbird explores many important morals that need to be introduced into the minds of the average, teenage student. These themes and morals include showing the value of empathy and understanding differences between people.’”
Should we be teaching To Kill A Mockingbird in schools? In the book. Both languge and evil are very prominate. Becasue of the lannguge and evil people believe that the book should be banned. In the book To Kill A Mockingbird, both languge and evil are present, causing people to ban the book from our schools.
Being able to completely understand and follow the different language in To Kill a Mockingbird is one thing, but to decide whether or not it’s still relevant is another thing. Well this book still is relevant and yes some may say that this book is history and we should be reading about the future and present not about the past, but our past is the most important because we can read about the mistakes made and not make them again. To Kill a Mockingbird is based around the civil rights movement and that means that there was a lot of racism happening during the novel. Even though To Kill a Mockingbird is considered an “older” novel and currently it’s the 21st century and not all students enjoy reading this book in their schools but the novel should stay in these curriculums because of the hard times in the civil rights movement
"The main one is, if I didn't I couldn't hold up my head in town, I couldn't represent this county in the legislature, I couldn't even tell you or Jem not to do something again.” (Lee, 100). I think this exposure to courage at a young age prepares Scout for the future and makes her a stronger person. Her dad is a big influence in her life and I think that he is a positive role model that she learns a lot from. The next way Atticus teaches Scout courage was
Some people think that to kill a mocking bird should/should not be taught in classrooms , Many schools teach To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee as part of their curriculum; however, some people think that this book is inappropriate for use in schools to teach this novel , it is important because It helps students understand how life was in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird; the book (should not/should) be taught in schools because bad language, you can learn from it, and it teaches not to hate people for what others did. first off, some people think to kill a mockingbird is not a good story to be taught, because of the bad language for example, in a recently published article( by Brian M). , he says “I turn the channel on TV at home when language gets harsh and my five-year-old daughter is sitting next to me”, However, he changes the channel because he wants his child to grow up with virtues he wants her not to be exposed to that kind of stuff Therefore, he doesn’t want his child to grow up with bad language and bad influences but tkam can be looked as a good influence when you can see the mistakes people made that is why to kill a mockingbird should be taught in classrooms.
Also it was courageous of Atticus to teach his children not to judge another until they know what that person is really going through. There is a quote that Atticus said “Never Judge anyone, until you have been in their shoes, and walked around in them” (pg. 86). Along with Atticus, Boo Radley is another character with courage. Boo saved Scout and Jem from Bob Ewell.
Martin Luther King stated: “Courage is an inner resolution to go forward despite obstacles...there comes a time when we must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but one must take it because it is right.” This quote is relevant throughout To Kill a Mockingbird because courage is a quality that most of the main characters possess. Taking place in Maycomb, Alabama, during the Great Depression, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is the story of two children named Scout and Jem. Their eyes are opened to who their neighbors really are when their father is appointed to defend an African American accused of rape in a prejudice town. The children grow up as the trial hypnotizes the citizens, and the reader sees courage
Ever wonder about real life lessons and what comes with having them, well the essay you 're about to read will teach you about them. First of all many lessons from older times have been taught today in school, some may not have been. To kill a mockingbird is a great lesson that teachers shouldn 't teach today for example the book has old fashioned and very sophisticated writing like on pg(31) “Jems free dispensation of my pledge..”, what high schooler in 10th grade is going to know what that word even means. If teachers are going to teach a lesson to their students then the kids should actually be able to understand the writing. Another example why to kill a mockingbird shouldn 't be taught in schools today is because kids would read this book and most likely not even be able to relate to the book, the whole racism thing we wouldn 't understand mainly because in our times everyone is treated the same, color doesn 't matter.
This book should be taught to High School students across the country, and it should not be a banned book. To Kill a Mockingbird teaches students morals, and ethics. The book is still partially accurate to what some people go through even in today’s world, and what the books reads is still a part of history that should not be covered up and tucked away. To Kill a Mockingbird should still be taught in school systems, and should not be a banned book because the novel focuses on a part of history that should not be ignored.
