Football Could be Safer : But Has Anybody Taken the Initiative? So, you're a high school football star. You're playing a match, you've caught the ball thrown to you, then get tackled. Your head hits the ground with a loud, audible thump. And now, you have a concussion. This kind of thing happens to football stars all across the U.S. and other countries. In the 2005-06 season, over half a million head injuries were sustained by high school students, nationally. I am not say removing the sport from schools as a whole. However, it's understood that there are ways to attempt to make the sport safer, all while having it still be just as fun/entertaining. Updating the "armored" pads the athletes wear, making amends to some of the rules, different methods of training, are all ways to make things even just the slightest bit safer than they already are. In case you weren't already aware, though you might've been, football is one of, if not the, leading causes of head/sports-related injuries. Like what's said in the above paragraph, in 2005 to 2006, over 500,000 head injuries were recorded nationally, "nationally" being in the U.S. Researchers from the Center for Injury Research and Policy conducted a study to compare injuries (that word's getting redundant, isn't it?) among high …show more content…
I don't really understand football, mainly the rules though. More to the point, There's always a way to make something safer, without taking away the appeal of it. And, I know there's not supposed to be any "I" statements, but personally, that's all I want, really. Just to make things safer so that those who do enjoy it, can do so without much, if not any, risk. Anyway, there's ways to implement changes without drastically affecting gameplay. You just have to be willing to
Redesigning the Football Helmet Head to head contact is a very serious matter. Kids, adults, and everyone in between are getting hurt in football due to the hard hits they take either in practice or games. The goal is to make football safer but people are still getting hurt and even killed. There are new helmets coming out every year but still not eliminating the problem.
And it did just that. Johnathan Zimmerman’s article “Football: Unsafe at any Level” really showcased each and every one of the rhetorical appeals. This editorial should be read by coaches, parents and as well as the football player themselves. This editorial will help the reader understand the dangers of the game. Not only does it teach you about the dangers, it also showcase that people are working to improve the game to make it more safe for everyone involved in the sport.
For example, better protective head gear and rules against head butting would allow less permanent damage and head-on-head contact. These changes could make the sport much safer for players, including young children that are being put in danger by playing football. The dangers of football concealed by the NFL were detrimental to the lives of many players, young and old, and their loved ones.
Football rules have been changing for the better of athletes over the years it has existed. Football rules early on where an advancement, but they didn’t know all the medical things we know now about player safety. In 1905 President Theodore Roosevelt demands change of rules in football or be abolished after 18 people are killed while playing in one year. “The first leather football helmet was worn by Joseph Reeves… This marks the birth of the American Football “ Football didn’t advance very fastly on player safety.

There has been a lot of controversy over football and the dangers of it. Concussions have been a major part of this talk about the safety of certain sports. People have been questioning the safety of contact sports for years. This has been a talk since football started back in 1869 with the first version of football. Of course, things have changed from 1869 and we have new rules and new protection gear.
It is important to raise awareness of sports-related head injuries to prevent traumatic accidents from happening. By using correct protection such as the most efficient helmets, athletes are able to have a safer contact when they play football. The era of Football in America is slowly coming to a close. Football has been known as America’s sport next to baseball for many years now. The general physicality of every play isn’t(B3) matched by any other sport on the planet, and that is why football causes more injuries than any other sport on the professional, and youth levels. Parents are pulling their kids from their teams, even in the middle of the season because of the information that has been released over the past decade illuminating a big problem for the game.
With all the studies performed and medical discovery about this concussions, Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, and Neurological Brain disease’s proving to cause symptoms of depression, suicide, and cognitive abilities later in life, there needs to be measures taken to help ensure safety of former and current football players. Introduction Over one million people are projected to play football in today’s society. With that being said, football may possibly be the most popular sport in America. The game of football has a violent nature that takes a toll on person’s body, physically and mentally.
The main change that could easily be made to help with the problem is to better the quality of the helmets used in the sport. It would not be too hard because new helmets are already being made just for the concussion cases. After this, changes could be made to the sport for safety. There will always be some dangers in the sport because it is a very high contact sport. “Despite the best efforts of the leagues, the players, and the medical and engineering communities, the incidence of injury at all levels of the game continues to increase” (Solving football’s).
People think banning football would decrease the amount of head injuries, “Characterized by hard tackles and intense speeds, the sport is conducive to a number of serious injuries, but there is one that has received a substantial amount of attention: mild traumatic brain injury and concussions” (Grush). Injuries can be prevented by the coaches focusing more on tackling the right way to anticipate injuries having to do with not doing it the right way. Also, most deaths having to do with football do not have to do with concussions, but with heat strokes. This can be prevented by pushing back the practicing season for football. Another thing, kids and parents know what they are getting into with the dangers and all, but they sign up anyway.
High school football gives school opportunities to improve an endless list of things at the school. Without this chance schools will get less equipment and a smaller budget for the school. Many new studies have shown that high school football is safer than what we hear on television and that in fact football is beneficial. Doctor Gregory Stewart at Tulane was quoted “There was no decline in their cognitive function based on the number of years that they participated in the sport.
Football concussions can lead to brain injuries or other serious health issues that can be fatal. Concussions can happen in many different ways, which all involve big hits to the head. Hard hits to a player's head can cause his or her brain to move in different ways which can cause brain bruising or bleeding. A hard hit to a player’s forehead causes the brain to accelerate in a back and forth motion that can make a player feel nauseous or unstable. If the hit is focussed in the left or right side of a player's forehead it can cause the brain to move in a twisting motion which will leave the player light headed and with a headache.
The players tackle each other in an effort to win; however, if the players were educated on the different health risks or injuries that can occur than the players would not tackle as hard or be more cautious when playing the game. According to “The NFL’s Fading Memories,” “there is a growing body of evidence that the multiple concussions and traumatic brain injury suffered by an estimated 30 percent of former player may very well precipitate the kind of violence that has dominated recent headline” (Amses 13). If high school football players know about these risks, then they probably would become more cautious with educated players. Football would not be as dangerous as before, and the game would still be entertaining and
With more and more young people playing football, the risk of players becoming disabled is becoming greater and greater. Depression, behavior that is erratic, headaches, and Alzheimer's disease (which does lead to death) are just some of the long-term effects of football. As a result, children should not play football due to its deadly effects. Another reason is you are probably thinking, "My child is safe; they always have a helmet on when playing football." Guess again, because no particular type of helmet
