The movement me “#MeToo, started in October of 2017, for women in the workforce to know they were not alone in their situation of sexual harassment. Then earlier this year, actresses dressed in black to stand against sexual assault at the Golden Globes awards. Celebrities, and even those who are not famous, have more recently come out with movements to help give people the confidence to come out about their experiences. In the article, “The Silence Breakers” by Edward Felsenthal, editor in chief, many victims of sexual harassment came out and told their stories. Victims of harassment need to be able to feel a sense of security and not feel controlled by the harasser, so that they are able to speak out against their offender to make sure they …show more content…
Actresses, like Selma Blair was threatened by James Toback that if she spoke up about what he did to her, he would “stab her eyes out with a Bic pen and throw her in the Hudson River.” (Felsenthal). Men believe that they have more power over women and that they can get away with it. Besides physical strength, they use their words to make the person feel vulnerable. Not only adults face harassment, children also often experience it. If a child or young teenager is being harassed by a parent or any other adult figure, they feel inferior to the older adult, which keeps them quiet. Children are most easily manipulated, and adults use that to their advantage and prey on children. Minor’s that experience this can have short-term effects as well as long-term effects, such as bad behavior, anger towards adult figures or even extreme anxiety. People and children alike need to fight past the fear and speak up against their abuser, tell anyone and try to seek help and gain the justice they …show more content…
Men expect women to always be comfortable with compliments, not understanding that if they hold a higher position over them or do not personally know the woman, it makes them seem creepy. Also, sometimes the words or the way it is said can be taken the wrong way. A simple, “You look nice today.” could be taken the wrong way, if it was said by a higher authority or someone of more power. People can also take a simple brush of the hand as someone initiation. Also, if a woman initiates the sexual actions but pulls away, men can claim that she “teased” him and then did not commit and then if they do not back off, the woman claim it as harassment. Women can sometimes take small things out of proportion but that is no excuse for not taking no for an
“The Raging Silence” is an article about a series of events that were happening in The city of Philadelphia. The Holocaust was the mass murder of millions of Jews and other people which took place in Europe between 1933 and 1945. The book Night by Elie Wiesel, the movie “The boy in the striped pajamas” and the article “A Secret Life” are based on things that happened and how it affected the characters in all the three works. Silence encourages the tormenter because it empowers the tormenter to continue with justice activities yet also endanger innocent human’s life. In the book Night by Eliezer Wiesel, the silence of the people in the town, prisoners and god influenced the Nazi soldiers to be more powerful which lead to injustice and violence activities.

The movie Carved in Silence was a very provoking and eye opening documentary for me. It depicted the experience of the Chinese immigrants of Angel Island very well through the narration and the dramatic recreation. As an immigrant, the opening scene and the many stories told evoked many memories and reflections of my family 's journey and aspirations. The stories and descriptions in this documentary were very surreal because they were too hard to believe.
So it is hard to speak out about a lot of our discomfort, because we may feel it is wrong or no one will believe us. While some may believe we, as women, are striving for equality among men, it is a completely different topic in regards to a job versus sexual harassment. The article expresses the abuse among women of color in low income jobs, who may not speak out for fear of losing their jobs. But these women may have children at home taking care of, or may be trying to complete a degree. Many are single mothers, undocumented families and are categorized as the minority group.
Some of these children may not be old enough to have a voice or they just are too shy. By having those in society aware of the signs and symptoms of child abuse we are hoping to break down the cycle. Some parents may not even believe that what they are doing to their child is a sign of child abuse but it could be something that has been passed down from their parents. What parents have to remember is that there are many ways of parenting around the world, this does not mean that anything goes, as long as it’s “cultural”, parents must adapt to what is acceptable in the dominant culture around them (Pennsylvania Family Support Alliance website, 2016, para.
Michelle Hoppe’s article gives a concise description of the traditions observed by men and women during the Victorian Era. Quickly outlined the author states, “courtship was considered more a career move” for the man would receive “all of a woman’s property… upon marriage” (Hoppe). As far as the women were concerned, they were trained to be wives and mothers, their training consisted of “learning to play the piano or guitar, dance and be conversant about light literature of the day” as well as “the art of conversation and the art of silence” (Hoppe). Initially, young women would be introduced into society, letting the public know she had finished her training and was ready for a husband, which was commonly done at a ball, then the “courtship
“ The Sounds of Silence” by Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel presents a deep understanding and meaning of the topic that people lack the ability to communicate. Peoples thoughts are ordered by the media and forget about the true meaning of their own voices. Simon and Garfunkel represent this through the use of figurative language and poetic techniques which served really well to their song. Darkness is sometimes described as a depressive state to those who can't confide in no one and are all alone.
Imagine you are an individual having no say over your marriage, relationship, or other vital issues. How would you feel? Have you ever been discouraged upon for gender or have experienced someone crossing boundaries when it comes to personal space? For many years, men and women alike have experienced sexual harassment and have been taught that these actions are acceptable when the reality is these actions are abominable. In 2006, Tarana Burke, a survivor of sexual assault, coined the phrase “Me Too” to raise awareness for girls and women of color who had survived sexual assault.
