The military being a male dominated workforce in the United States military had lead to the prevalence of sexual assault against military women to be more prevalent than that of women in the general population. Researcher has shown that women in the military are at an 8% increase of being sexually assaulted than those in the general population (Bostock et al., 2007, Compbell et al., 2010, Coyle et al., 1996, Martin et al., 1998, &Turchik et al., 2010). Other important findings are that age, and martial statuses are contributors to the rate of sexual assault in the military. Single, unmarried, divorced, and young women who join the military are at a higher risk of being sexually assaulted, as well as women who join and have a history of …show more content…
First, superiors in the military must take action when they suspect that sexual assault or any other type of assault, and or crime is occureing. When a sexual assault is reported, a superior should not be allowed to just say that he does not belief that it was not serious enough to start an investigation, and when an alligation of sexual assault or any other time of assault is reported a case must be open in order to investigate the alligation. Now if superiors do not open an investigation when one is reported then the superior should face conequences such as demotion, pay cut, and in the most serious circumsatcne dishonorable discharge from the military. In the other hand, false sexual assault alligation should also have conequences such as demotion, pay cut, and in the most serious circumsatcne dishonorable discharge from the military. Second, a board of overseers must be created who will overlook investigations, and alligations. For example when a sexual assault is reported the superior must send a written report of the alligations to the board of overseers, also the victim can also directly go to the board of overseers, and report the alligations. Lastly, the board of overseers should be composed of indivudals who are not part of the military in order to keep it as unbias as possible, this would exclude formal miliotary members, and indivudals who have any ties with the
A prime example of male on male sexual assault; the part of life in the armed forces that hardly anyone talks about is the case of Greg Jeloudov. Greg Jeloudov is a 35 year old actor, with a Russian accent whom was driven by both patriotism for his adopted homeland and the pragmatic notion that the military could be a first step in a career that would enable him to provide for his family. Instead, Jeloudov arrived in Fort Benning, Ga., for basic training in May 2009, in the middle of the economic crisis and rising xenophobia. The soldiers in his unit, responding to his Russian accent and New York City address, called him a “champagne
The Department of Defense (DOD) should consider the value in creating a “Tipping Point “ as it seeks ways to improve the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response (SAPR) program. I propose that the tipping point could be enacting a dramatic change to the fraternization policy as it relates to workplace dating and relationships. Specifically I am proposing that the military adopt a strict romance policy, similar to what some businesses define as a love clause. Malcolm Gladwell developed the notion that at a systems tipping point; changes would eventually become irreversible, hence adopting a new standard of behavior for that system.
Due to this over exaggeration, men are not able to create their own identity, which leads to serious gender and behavioral issues. This forced environment leads to women having to act differently as well because many people feel that “women are not held to the same standards as men” (Nicolas) Nicolas shows that the military environment affects women as well as men and forces genders to act in different ways. Gender is not universal but the military forces gender roles to be blown out of proportion. Women are not held to the same standards as men, which in our day and age should be unheard of. Nicolas’ piece extends the point that Myers makes about the military environment and genders.
Over 20% of women within the military have been sexually assaulted, as well as 1% of men. Yes, men as well. The terrible thing regarding this statistic, is that it leads to another one. Of all the rapes that occur, usually only 175 perpetrators get jail time for their crime and wrongdoing. Not surprisingly, this loops around to the commanders not reporting the rape and the military covering it up.
For my generation when many of female friends go off to college their parents teach them not to walk home alone late at night in fear of rape, it is such a common occurrence that a friend of mine has taken to carrying around pepper spray. There is a company called women on guard that provide personal safety equipment for its customers. The problem with this is that young women are taught to be on guard for a shadowy figure attacking them at night and not that “60 to 80 percent of rapes are date or acquaintance rape.” (Koss, Dinero, Siebel, and Cox 1988: 217) The essay “Fraternities and Collegiate Rape Culture: Why are Some Fraternities More Dangerous Places for Women?” by A. Ayres Boswell and Joan Z. Spade differs by acknowledging who
Imagine joining the military at a young age, preparing to see the world, make new friends, and form a bond that often rivals that of close siblings. Only to endure the unthinkable the unimaginable an attack not by a foreign enemy but at the hands of a fellow soldier or superior officer. This is the tragic truth for many soldiers, both men and women alike, it is not uncommon and it is an invisible wound that lasts long after the soldier returns to civilian life. This paper will reflect the importance of change within the Veterans Administration regarding Military Sexual Trauma. Ruth Moore, joined the military at the tender age of eighteen from a poor background expecting the military to help her pay for college.
Joining the Unites States military can be something really rewarding, it can provide you with education and a life changing experience at least that is what you are told. Even though these statements are true; when the military is recruiting they hide some information for example sexual assaults among the solders. Sexual assault is any type of forced or coerced sexual contact or behavior that happens without consent. Sexual assault includes rape and attempted rape, child molestation, and sexual harassment or threats (womenshealth.gov).
This paper will evaluate sexual assault programs. These programs are designed to rehabilitate current offenders from committing the same sexual crime again. The programs consist of behavioral and cognitive treatment and mental health treatment. Sex offenders do not get a choice to attend rehabilitation after being released from prison they are put on probation where they are mandated to complete treatment in order to complete their conditions of probation. Not all sex offenders are the same there are three different types of offenders.
In a hollow smug hallway, Harper’s life changed in those two horrific minutes. She used all her force and power to escape, but he had a stronger grip. She yells, “STO…” but doesn’t get the chance to complete the word with her body in shock and pain till she passes out. She tried to comprehend what happened and why he attacked her, till the nurse comes back after getting the whole story to tell her she should keep this attack quiet. Harper was an enlisted member in the military and is one in a million of service members who get sexually assaulted and harassed in the military.
Which campus will be next? It is not a question of it, but when and where? College is the first time students get to spend time without parental guidance. In fact, college is a place where many students learn about themselves, but are they safe? Campuses are filled with all kinds of students, including different ages.
Homosexuality, for decades, was not accepted in the military. They would be punished if their secret became uncovered, and eventually discharged. In 1992, Bill Clinton made it possible for gays to join, but they could not discuss their sexual orientations, in accordance with the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy. If their secret came out, they would face a negatively impacting discharge, still. December of 2010 was the biggest accomplishment for homosexuals involved in the military, with the repeal of DADT, allowing homosexuals to openly serve in the United States Armed Forces.
What causes a veteran to feel pain? What causes a veteran to become violent? What causes a veteran to develop a drug addiction to cope with their emotional stress? Veterans experience traumatic events during their service years and the result of their experiences are astonishing. Experiencing these events can be burned into their minds and create various forms of pain for the rest of their lives.
Angela Davis demonstrates the ongoing violent abuse as she quotes a report on sexual maltreatment in women’s prisons, “We found that male correctional employees have vaginally, anally, and orally raped female prisoners and sexually assaulted and abused them” (Davis 78). However disturbing this blunt sexual contact that male officers take with the vulnerable prisoners may be, the officers adopt even more severe tactics to harass and abuse the women as they often utilize “mandatory pat-frisks or room searches to grope women 's breasts, buttocks, and vaginal areas...” (Davis 79). To add insult to injury, women are virtually incapable of escaping from their abuser(s). Prison employees upkeep their inappropriate behavior as it is believed they will “rarely be held accountable, administratively or criminally” (Davis 78).
Many victims of the assaults refuse to provide the information on the cases of military sexual trauma due to the fact that they feel shame or suffer from other psychological problems caused by the assault. Gayathri (2013) states that on June 5, 2013, at a Senate Armed Services Committee there took place the review of the situation of military sexual trauma in the Armed forces of the United States. This problem caused severe indignation of the senators. They suggested adopting the law that allows the victim to inform on the cases of sexual assault without communicating with the direct commander. It is particularly helpful in the case if the threatening comes from the military
My definition of normal sexual behavior originated from growing up in the south, with Baptist parents, and was modified more when I joined the military. Normal sexual behavior was between a husband and a wife only while I was growing up. This was opposite of what I experienced because there was teen pregnancy and observing people that appeared to be LGBT. Being in the military was another source that influenced what I believed was normal.
