Formal Lab Report: Lab 6: Separation Anxiety Objective The objective of the Separation Anxiety Lab was to plan out and apply different separation techniques depending on the physical and chemical properties of the materials in a mixture. These techniques were used to separate the materials into their pure components. Introduction The goal of the Separation Anxiety Lab was to separate components that had been mixed together, which is important for obtaining pure substances, calculating the amounts of products or reactants used in chemistry, or finding out the mass percent of components in a mixture using the formula: mass of A=mass of component Atotal mass100. For a component that can not be separated to find its mass, you use: mass of …show more content…
The separated mixture was then filtered using vacuum filtration again. Once the filtrate was all pulled through the filter the remaining sand was washed twice with five mL of distilled water. Air was continuously pulled through until the sand was dry. The filtrate was transferred into another 150-mL beaker. The vacuum filtration was cleaned and set up again for the third filtration. The mass of a ceramic weigh boat was taken and recorded, then the dry sand was transferred to the weigh boat and both were weighed and recorded …show more content…
This was due to the polarity of the substances. Water and CuSO4 are polar molecules, meaning they have unequal sharing of electrons. The partial negative charges of the oxygen atoms of water surround the partial positive charges on the copper atoms of CuSO4 and partial positive charges of the hydrogen atoms in water surround the partial negative charge of the sulfate atoms in CuSO4 causing the molecule to dissociate. The potassium nitrate dissolves in water due to solubility rules, nitrate ions are always soluble in water. A very strong acid would be needed in order to dissolve sand and break apart the bonds, but water is neutral so the sand separated from the filtrate. In order to separate KNO3 and CuSO4, which are both soluble in water, recrystallization was used. The reason the two components can be separated through recrystallization is because of the temperature dependence of solubility, KNO3 is much more soluble in hot water and insoluble in cold water while CuSO4 is only slightly more soluble in hot water. When the filtrate was heated the solution was saturated with KNO3 but when the system was cooled, the KNO3 became insoluble and pure crystals reformed while CuSO4 stayed dissolved in the
Introduction The purpose of this Lab was to identify the density of the unidentified object and determine what substance the unidentified object given by the teacher was. The density calculated in the experiment will stay the same because the density of the unidentified object will stay constant. The Independent Variable of this experiment was the calculated density and the unidentified object given. The Dependant Variable for this experiment was the density.
We were asked to correctly communicate these findings as we tested each of the substances she had encountered with both water and hexane. In experiment number three, The Relationship Between the Volume of a Gas and the Temperature, we where given a list of materials and asked to come up with our own procedure, which we did using zip lock bags filled with air, and submerged fully in a measured amount of water in order to find the volume, and then the change in volume when the temperature of the water was increased. In the fourth experiment we were asked to find the temperature of heated water, based on the cold and warm water. The experiment also required that each section be preformed several times in order to ensure accuracy, and also asked that the experimental responsibilities be split up between lab partners, each doing a section of the testing. This gave us an opportunity to work together with our fellow lab partners, with no one person doing the bulk of the work.
Put the filtered liquid back into the beaker, then, clean up the Buchner funnel and filter
Lastly, the unknown compound was reacted with two different salts. For the first salt, 0.50 grams of KCl was mixed with 5 mL of water in one beaker while 0.5 grams of NaNO3 was mixed with 5 mL of water in a different beaker. Then, the NaNO3 solution was added to the KCl solution. To perform the reaction with the second salt, 0.50 grams of KCl was mixed with 5 mL of water and 1 mL of 1 M Ag(NO3)2 was added. After performing each reaction, the solution was observed to see if a reaction occurred and the pH value of the resulting solution was tested using a pH
of Sodium bicarbonate (NaCHO3), and 5 mL of phenol red solution were all placed at separate location inside the baggie. Finally all the air was pushed out of the bag, the bag was sealed, and the contents were mixed thoroughly. Observation were then recorded and the bag was thrown away. This process was then repeated six more times using different combinations of chemicals.
A digital scale should be used to precisely measure the grams of the needed masses, and 25 mL of water should be poured into 2 beakers, each getting 25 mL. Place a flask under a ring stand containing a funnel with an 11 cm filter paper. Each measured reactant goes into one of the beakers, and then these two beakers’ contents are combined. Pour the mixture of the two reactants slowly and intermittently into the funnel until the mixture is gone and it has filtered all the way through the filter paper and into the
The chemical that caused a precipitant to form was determined to be the limiting reactant. The filter containing the barium phosphate that was filtered from the liquid was then dried and later massed. Using

Adult separation anxiety is the same as that of separation anxiety in children; however, instead of a parent or caregiver, adults fear major attachment figures being separated from them (Brannan). These figures include siblings, spouses, significant others, children, and/or friends (Brannan). Under the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition (DSM-5), separation anxiety disorder is now categorized under Anxiety Disorders (“Separation”). Based upon the statistical data collected, approximately 6.6 percent of adults in America suffer from separation anxiety during their lifetime; approximately 77 percent of adults suffering from adult separation anxiety experienced their first symptoms during adulthood (Brannan). Approximately 4.1 percent of children suffer from separation anxiety in America (Brannan).
During the Mixed Substances lab the objective was to see how many properties of individual substances compare with properties of mixed substances. From here on the words that would help you along the way of the lab for your research is mixture, homogeneous mixture, and last but least heterogeneous mixture. The hypothesis or guess on what would happen when the water is mixed with the cornstarch, is the cornstarch and water will mix and form a new liquid/solid. However, the Investigating Mixtures lab objective was to observe that not all liquids behave the same way when mixed with other liquids. Moreover the hypothesis of this experiment was that the vegetable oil and colored will separate because the vegetable oil will go to the top and the
The overall purpose of this lab was to develop a lab procedure in order to separate and measure the mass of each containment obtained the provided sample. In addition, this experiment was conducted in order to provide the EPA with a plan to remove all contaminants from a heterogenous mixture which purifies the water, making it accessible for the society. Furthermore, the sample consisted of the following contaminants, sand, rock, wood, plastic, salt, water, and an unknown metal. When it came to separating the contaminants, the wood and plastic were taken out through the use of tweezers, while the rocks were separated by decanting the mixture of sand and rocks from the water.
Topic: The relationship between parenting and separation anxiety in early childhood Introduction: Separation from parents is an important course for every child. Of course, it is natural for children to feel anxious because it is the first time in their lives to learn how to say goodbye to their parents. Separation anxiety is a normal stage in human development. Understanding some strategies can help parents and children to handle separation anxiety more easily. Besides, high parental control on children is likely to be associated with increased opportunity of getting separation anxiety (Wood J, 2006).
Second step, I recorded the number of moles of copper sulfate on the attached data sheet. Third, I collect the two different zinc samples a metal sheet and metal powder from the instructor and record the weights on the data sheet. Fourth step, I added the provided samples of zinc into the CuSO4 solutions in the beaker and stir the mixture with a stir bar on a magnetic stirrer and stirred it for 2-5 minutes. Fifth step, I observed the color change in the reaction vessel and record
Task 1 M1 Describe the scientific principles behind each of the three procedure above. Vacuum filtration is a procedure when a sold needs separating from a solvent to react the mixture. Then the mixture of a solid is measured through the filtration paper in a Buhner funnel. The liquid is drained through the funnel into the flask.
Other causes of separation anxiety are things like environmental changes, genetic influence, parent/child attachment, developmental considerations, cognitive factors, and behavioral factors. With environmental changes there is a big change in a child’s life that could cause a lot of stress such as a big move, death or illness of a close relative or pet, or even starting a new school. In genetic influence, evidence suggest a genetic link between separation anxiety in children and a history of panic disorder, anxiety, or depression in their parents. The quality of attachment between a child and parent has also been identified as a factor in separation anxiety. If the child senses emotional distance, the behaviors may be ab attempt to draw the parent in more closely.
