Chapter two in the textbook Reflect & Relate an Introduction to Interpersonal Communication by Steven McCornack talks all about what “self” is and how to achieve complete fulfillment for one’s self which is also known as self-actualization. The components of self, as described in the book are, “ . . . self-awareness, self-concept, and self-esteem” (McCornack 39). Self-awareness is the idea in which one can take a moment to move feelings, beliefs, and other external influences aside and just evaluate oneself in a holistic perspective that is not skewed by opinions of others, etc. Having the ability to actually think about who one is brings a lot of power and mental stability in such a way that allows for improvement.
Speaking about self-esteem, the self-affirmation narrative is a good way to help rebuild your self esteem by yourself. Maintaining your self-image is a good way to keep yourself motivated to continue to put effort, but if this image gets destroyed then it makes it much harder to keep yourself motivated because you will have the thought that you can’t do it. The self-affirmation narrative helps rebuild the way you perceive yourself to be good and competent which is the ideal self-image you should have. Having a good self-image can help me build the confidence and have faith in myself to behave without restrictions and limits without worrying about

There are a few links between an individual’s identity, self-esteem and self-image. An individual’s identity is them, their age, their name, ethnicity and background, their family, also their language and education. Their self-esteem means how much they actually value themselves and lastly their self-image is how they view themselves or see themselves. If they have no identity, for example if they are afraid of how others might see them this links to a low self-esteem which can lead to social isolation and/or they might suffer from depression, then their self-image may then suffer such as they forget to look after their personal appearance, hygiene and how they used to dress. On the other hand if they are happy and confidence with their identity then the individual is most likely to look after themselves and their personal image more such as the way they look, dress, eat healthily and exercise etc.

In Mcleod’s article, it said that people “‘think about, evaluate, or perceive’ themselves” (Mcleod 1). Mcleod talks, in the article, about how people thinking, evaluating, and perceiving about themselves is call self-concept. Whenever people think about themselves, most of the time, people are confused about whether or not they are pursuing right actions for their future, especially people with low self-esteem . Furthermore, people get more confused if their actions dramatically differ from others. However, again, people’s actions determine who they are, so even if their actions are dramatically different from others, it may be a path for that person’s success.
Chapter 1 INTRODUCTION Situational Analysis Self- concept and self- esteem are two psychological terms that are very important and commonly used interchangeably because it is important to know on how we see yourself honestly and to like or at least accept yourself, and the internal barriers that keep you from doing your best to achieve success and happiness. Self -concept or self -image is the sum total of all the knowledge and information a person has of himself. It includes factors like your gender, name, personality, physical appearance, race, likes and dislikes, beliefs, values, social history, nationality, schooling, family, career, accomplishments, failures, skills and talents. The self-concept also includes what the person he thinks might become in the future and what he was like in the past oneself.
The nature of personal knowing has been discovered by numerous writers and researchers in dissimilar ways. Carper advise that “it promotes wholeness and integrity in the personal encounter” she continues that there is a constant process toward knowing the self since “one does not know about the self-one strives to know the self”. Chinn & Kramer enlighten that by knowing the self-one can truly understand the other person. As Carper states, none of the empirical categories of personal characteristics and actions provide a deep knowledge of a human being as a person; as a self. Additionally Carper highlights the significance of “therapeutic use of self” which only becomes imaginable through personal knowing.

Your online persona, or rather social media profile, can in many ways be viewed as a form of self-presentation. Self-presentation, which is “the conscious or unconscious process by which people try to influence the perception of their image”, is not only natural, but also takes place in the offline world through social interactions (Junco : 111). We have a perceived images of ourselves and we want to communicate to the outside world and ensure that other people see us as we view ourselves. On social media we view our profiles as a representation of who we are.
