Selena Quintanilla-Perez, was a Mexican American singer who became a phenomenon of Latin music. She won a lot of awards, including a Grammy and she is known as the "Queen of Tex- Mex”. In the 90’s Selena faced two labels, which made a bit difficult to succeed in the United States and in the Tex-Mex music; The first one, she was Mexican American and the second one, she was a woman. In spite that labels she knew how to break them and nowadays she is a legend. This film basically, is about the very short life of Selena (Jennifer Lopez); it tells her personal life, her career as an artist and her tragic death. In one scene, when her father is teaching her how to sing the song “Reloj no marques las horas”, is notable that she is having troubles with her pronunciation of the letter R, in Spanish, and she was not even interest in learning Spanish, she only wanted to go outside and play with her friends. So when she grew up, it took her a lot of practice, to be able to sing in Spanish, but she did it and she did it very well, but on spanish interviews she had no fluency. This is a very common issue in the Chicano community, a lot of kids do not know speak Spanish because English is the only language that they developed at school and in their daily basis. Campbell describes the absence of a mother language in upcoming generations as a form of assimilation. “By and large in the United States, it is the pressure of the American culture that forces Mexicans or Latinos to ultimately make English their first language,” Campbell says. A three months pregnant teenager was declared dead after her mysterious collapse at her home in Honduras. Her family members called a priest believing she was possessed by an evil spirit when they saw the teenager fell unconscious and foaming at her mouth. Relatives of Neysi Perez, 16, said that the teenager woke up in the night to use the toilet when they saw her passed out after hearing a gunfire outside. They recall that the priest who came tried to exorcise Perez but became unresponsive. They rushed the teenager to the nearest hospital but was pronounced dead by the doctors three hours later.
Alina Diaz-Hernandez passed peacefully at home on Thursday, November 4, 2103 in Providence, R.I. at the age of 100. Alina is survived by her spouse, Francisca J. Hernandez Ruiz, her best friend, Elhaisha Tatis, her brother, Elias Diaz, her children and grandchildren, Rosalinda Bella Hernandez Rodriguez, Mariela Angelee Hernandez Mendez, and Jose Antonio Hernandez Mendez. She is preceded in death by her mom ,Leonor Anginette Contreras Guillen, her father, Elvis Diaz, her step father, Jeury Tavares , and her brother Derek Diaz and step brother Deury Tavares. Everyone above was/is a resident of Providence, R.I.
By learning to sing in spanish she then spoke spanish fluently. Soon after live releases , Selena went to work on a english album that would put her on the top of the music charts. Sadly she was not live to see the day. Selena died on March 31,1995 in Corpus Christi Texas, at the age of 23.

I will be explaining all about the music and deciphering and breaking down each song choice that was played during this movie. Selena at a young age was quite interested in the popular 80’s singer Donna Summer. She influenced Selena in many ways on why Selena loved music so much. The reason that this was a bad thing is because her family was Mexican and wasn’t usually found to sing 80’s pop.
Selena Quintanilla Perez was an idol in the Mexican American world. She was an empowering and was about to become for famous in the United States but was tragically shot before it could happen. The person who was accused of First-Degree murder was a woman called Yolanda Saldivar. Saldivar is the founder and president of the Selena Fan club and the manager of one of Selena’s boutiques. In early March of 1995, there was a meeting between Selena, Saldivar, and Selena’s family about a money situation.
Selena Quintanilla was a very successful “Tex-Mex” singer, who, from the beginning of her life to the end of it, had an extraordinary life. After one time of singing to her father, a band was created and she was put into the singing world. Since that day, many journeys occurred. She has performed in many places like Mexico and Texas. She even got married and won a Grammy.
The legend of the Virgen de Guadalupe has become a common symbol of hope to many incoming immigrants of Latin American countries. Due to U.S. governmental and economic interventions in Latin American countries, it has caused many people to migrate as refuges and flee unstable environments. These mass migrations have been followed by torturous trails and stories that many times end in death or abuse, however, other times it has allowed refugees to move away and live stable lives in the U.S. However, once in the U.S., these immigrants are faced with discriminatory policy based on false accusations that makes their lives unsafe and unprotected. Therefore, Latinx religious faith becomes a strong component of community for these groups.

She did so many tremendous things, influenced so many people, and made such a big impact in the music industry. Selena mainly focused on Mexican music when she first started. She did not always stick to her Mexican culture and Mexican music though. This is the story and background of Selena Quintanilla-Perez.
Esperanza’s decisions and actions are similar to the events in the plot of the movie Quincera (2006) directed by Richard Glasser and Wash Westmoreland. Within this work a girl named Magdalena is preparing for her sweet fifteen. This story is quite different, as during this time Magdalena discovers that she is pregnant.
She made six albums between 1987 and 1994. She won a Grammy award for her album, Selena Live, in 1993. Her album, Ven Conmigo, was the first Tejano record to achieve gold status. It sold more than 500,000 copies. At the Tejano Music Awards, she obtained the award for “Best Female Vocalist of the Year and “Performer of the Year”.
But, that all changed when she started to become popular among Tejano music fans. Leading her to win “best female vocalist of the year” and “performer of the year” at the Tejano Music Awards. In the 90s her album named “Ven Conmigo” was the first Tejano album to reached gold selling over five hundred thousand copies. In, 1993 when went on to win a Grammy for “best Mexican American album”. The following year she released another album which was called “Amor Prohibido” that also went gold.

Her contributions to music and fashion, which made her one of the most celebrated Mexican-American artists of the late 20th century, led to her being called the “Queen of Tejano Music.” She remains one of the most influential Latin artists of all time and is credited for catapulting the Tejano genre into the popular mainstream. Selena Quintanilla broke many barriers, first as the leader of Selena y los Dinos where she expanded traditional Tejano music by adding non-traditional instruments and music genres including cumbia, pop, rock, and disco, and she ultimately made history by becoming the first ever Tejano artist to win a Grammy in 1994. Selena Quintanilla Pérez was a very talented young woman who was murdered by her fan club president and manager, Yolanda Saldívar. She loved performing, and she loved her fans. She encouraged kids to stay in school and avoid drugs and alcohol. She had a major impact on the Latin community, and her death was devastating to everyone. Selena 's childhood was just that, a childhood with a few bad moments.

Two strong female characters in the story are Dona Guadalupe, Lupe’s mother, and Dona Margarita, Juan’s mother. Both Dona Guadalupe and Dona Margarita proves themselves as a caregiver and a leader for their family. “Dona Guadalupe put the baby’s little feet in a bowl of warm water,… that he heard from inside the womb” (57).
