Sectionalism Before the 19th century, Americans stuck to their traditional roots and felt no need to try new things or implement new technologies, but that soon changed. In the South, the demand for cotton was at an all time high, but it was a long and difficult process as slaves had to separate the seed and cotton by hand. A man named Eli Whitney saw an opportunity to fix this issue and created the infamous Cotton Gin. The machine worked by inputting the cotton on one side and cranking it as it separates the seeds and cotton with the hassle as the output results in cotton. As the process was now easier, farmers bought more slaves to operate this machine to earn more income. Within a few years, this machine alone boosted the southern economy. Also in the South, farmers who grew grain had to harvest them within a two week period after they ripen. This meant no new grains could be planted during harvesting season causing a loss in portion of crop. Thankfully, a man named Cyrus McCormick invented the Mechanical Reaper. The machine worked as a divider separated the stalks as a blade would cut them to be picked up by hand. This machine allowed farmers to …show more content…
The South used the Africans immigrants who were forced off their homeland from countries in Africa like Liberia through the Transatlantic Slave Trade. The African American population now was more prevalent in the South, as they were used as field workers non voluntarily. After Nat Turner’s rebellion, Southerners were not as lenient with free slaves and tried hoarding them in. They did not have any rights or liberties, but were fed and sheltered by the owners. In the 19th century, the Interregional Slave Trade was a great migration of slaves from the Upper South to the Deep South. This slave trade was driven by economic factors and soil exhaustion in
The mechanical reaper was a once-in-a-generation type of invention that changed the way farmers harvested their crops this invention made it easier for farmers to do their job. Which increased crop supplies to feed their families. The mechanical reaper was a sleigh-type of machine that hooked up to a horse with a blade invented by a farmer, Cyrus McCormick this amazing invention. Cyrus McCormick didn't need to be good at marketing or salesmanship, because he was such but Cyrus was very good at both that's why the mechanical reaper had so much success. And after this innovation, the farming industry only got easier and easier for farmers due to new inventions that improved upon the base mechanical reaper.
His achievements were partially due to the economic conditions of the time. In this era, many single farmers relied heavily on family members for labor during the wheat harvesting season. Wheat had to be gathered quickly at this time before it broke down and started to decay. Often, even with people working around the clock, much of the harvest would go to waste. Therefore, it was essential for wheat-related farm machinery, such as the reaper (Sobel 104).
The reaper was a significant agricultural invention that revolutionize farming. Cyrus took over his fathers project and at the age of 22. As a result he managed to finished it within six weeks and had build field tested, remodeling and successfully demonstrated the world first mechanical reaper in 1831. The function of the reaper was to cut, threshed, and bundle grain while being pulled through a field by horses.
Cyrus Hall Mcormick changed the grain harvesting world when he perfected his invention of the reaping machine. Cyrus Mcormick invented the mechanical reaper in 1831 but continued to perfect it up until 1834 when he got a paten on the machine. The first mechanical reaper was pulled by horses so his invention was a huge step forward. Mcormick’s reaper allowed farmers to harvest up to 10 acres a day, which is a huge upgrade compared to before when farmers could only harvest only two-three acres a day.
The Cotton Gin invented by Eli Whitney was a machine that was able to quickly separate cotton fibers from the seeds, this made work faster and more productive. Although this invention affected the South in many helpful ways the biggest effect of the Cotton Gin was the civil war. The Cotton Gin was a big demand in the South because cotton and agriculture were what the economy relied on. The invention needed people to work the cotton gin therefore, the South needed an abundance of slaves. The population of enslaved people was far larger in the South than in the North as seen in this map showing the distribution of the population of enslaved people in the United States, in 1861 shown on the map below (Map of Enslaved 1861).
Evidence from Doc D, shows that over 100 million acres were harvested crops. How this was possible was advances in machinery. The tractor at the time was a new type of technology used to help farmers plant soil for crops. Since the soil was not watered because of the drought in the previous paragraph, this caused the soil to turn into dust.
In this time period slavery was the biggest aspect in American (South) in its era. Due to the Spanish taking lands from the Native Americans to colonist and to build on the new land. Then enslaving
It revolutionized the cotton industry by making it more profitable. A machine was now used to remove seeds from cotton rather than having to remove them by hand. This allowed more cotton to be processed quicker which made production of cotton more efficient for farmers. Prior to the invention of the cotton gin, slavery was actually dying out in the southern United States due to how labor intensive the removal of seeds from cotton had become.
Sectionalism The definition of the word sectionalism is the restriction of interest to a narrow sphere. There were 3 main sections that practiced sectionalism in the 1800s. These sections were the North, the South, and the West. A few events that created sectional conflict were tariffs, slavery, representation, and states rights.
Another invention that helped farming was the wheelbarrow; The wheelbarrow made it easier for Farmers to transfer Goods. By the Han Dynasty creating these new inventions, it brought farming to a new level and was easier than
The demonstrations of division in America coexisted many: utopian societies, clashes over public space, backlash alongside immigrants, urban rebellions, black demonstration, and Indian oppositions. America was a separated land in need of change with the South in the biggest demand. The South trusted heavily on agriculture, equally opposed to the North, which was vastly populated and an industrialized union. The South produced cotton, which remained its main cash crop and countless Southerners knew that hefty reliance on slave labor would damage the South ultimately, but their forewarnings were not regarded. The South was constructed on a totalitarian system.
Approximately three Southern states change their approach on forced labor without compensation, African American slaves would work for an amount of cash that was, generally, given to the masters of the slaves; However, some of these African American were freed and, therefore, kept all the earnings. In the mid 1800’s southern states, slavery was progressively headed towards salary base employment which would boost the states economically. Furthermore, Northern states were already using such economic structure to boost labor in the industrial region, which led to divide the country into sectors of specialized commodities. Southern state were no longer the only major contributor of economic growth, the Northern states were in large in foreign demands for cotton in the years of 1815-1843 as industries boomed in
Plows and wheels allowed people to cultivate more food. Grinding tools permitted food to be processed for storage. The new tool technology allowed humans to advance in many essential
They created the iron plow because the scratch plow was not effective of the claylike soil. Serf also changed how they grow crops. They now use the three-way system which means one ⅓ of the soil is not being used so ⅓ of the soil had a chance to become fertilized while
Machines were made by technology have given a lot of easier way to implement and make a strong quality of the earth to implement on. Also, it helps the farmers to have less work in farming. So, it takes all of the farmers have to just control the
