Scientific Revolution Letter

Galileo, is one of the best scientists in history, he can think and act more fluently than other people. He should be set free, because if you don’t, nobody is going to make another invention that will make your life even better, or the next generations.
Galileo has made many discoveries, other people couldn’t even imagine! He noticed that the planets,Mercury and Venus pass through phases just like the Moon. The only way they could do that is, if they circled the Sun, and not the Earth. And most importantly of all, Galileo discovered that there are four moons around Jupiter. Another reason is that we wouldn’t have been able to see that Jupiter has 4 large moons, without it. Discoveries can mean a lot to humanity, that’s how we have evolved since, ancient times. His discoveries have made a big difference in the world. If it wasn’t for him we still would have thought that the moon was smooth, but with his telescope he saw that it had craters, valleys, mountains, and a geographical terrain. How his discoveries have impacted our lives, is that we would have had a little bit of knowledge of space, or even the universe. Another reason how it can impact our lives, is that if he didn’t support the Copernican system that stated that planets orbit the sun rather than the Earth as the Catholic Church said at the time, we would have still thought that we are the center of the …show more content…
He is the reason that we know that the Earth isn’t the center of the universe, the Sun is. People would have believed you guys, even though you guys are totally wrong, and are just following and believing what the bible says. I know you guys think he is crazy just because he said, and showed you that the moon isn’t smooth at all, but what he says is true, if you don’t believe him, don’t but he is telling the truth. You guys are wrong, for example in the picture from the Scientific Revolution DBQ it shows Galileo showing the pope that the moon has craters, and the pope is thinking to knocking some sense into him, because he thinks he’s crazy. Another reason why you guys are wrong and should free Galileo from prison is that you guys ordered Galileo to turn himself into the Holy Office to begin trial for holding the belief that the Earth revolves around the Sun, which was deemed heretical by you guys. During the sixteenth and seventeenth century, many scientists had developed a new perspective on the world around them. Scientists such as Galileo and Copernicus envisioned a world where natural phenomenons could be proved through experimentation. Furthermore, the work of scientists during this time period were affected by the approval of political figures, the support from influential members of the church, and social factors that influenced the development and acceptance of new theories. To powerful political figures, scientific theories were regarded as an opportunity to gain power and money.
Many people fought over the point that the Sun is the center and this caused a conflict between the Church, Copernicus and Galileo. “The picture that Copernicus made showed the solar system, and showed the way the solar system actually looked.” (Document 1) The diagram made the church get angry because the church didn’t want to be wrong and decided to punish Copernicus and Galileo, who also agreed with Copernicus. The church was a powerful authority and if proven wrong people would start to not believe the Pope’s words and would go against the church.

The printing press is now a tool to spread new ideas like wildfire, assuring that anything published will be widely seen. In addition, nation states are competing for power and wealth and there’s no better way to do that than to learn about the sciences to create new ways to solve problems, thus making money and gaining influence in the world. Autumn Stern Galileo Trial Summary + Copernicus Write Up In the early 17th century, there was no doubt that the Catholic church held extreme power throughout Europe. They also held to the geocentric theory (all planets, heavenly bodies and the sun revolving around the earth) put forth by Ptolemy and Aristotle because of how neatly it could fit into the current teachings. Unlike this theory, however, Galileo enforced Copernicus’ heliocentric theory with inductive reasoning rather than deductive. Galileo made observations about the moons of Jupiter and their orbit around Jupiter, which he likened to a smaller version of their solar system.

Benjamin Banneker was an important mathematician who was also African American. Banneker was born on November 9, 1731 in Ellicott’s Mills, Maryland. He always had an interest in mathematics while his grandmother, a freed slave, taught him. His grandmother was not his only source of learning, though, for he also attended a Quaker school until the 8th grade (Benjamin Banneker (1731-1806), n.d., p. xx).
Galileo Galilei was an Italian astronomer who disagreed with the Roman Catholic theory of geocentrism. He was not a heretic because he was a Christian and had similar beliefs to the Roman Catholics, but he did not agree with the Church’s theory of the position and movement of Earth in the Solar System. Document A is an excerpt of a letter to Duchess Christina of Tuscany written by Galilei, counter-arguing the heresy claims. In the letter, Galileo wrote, “Can an opinion be heretical and yet have no concern with the salvation of souls?” Although he did not believe in the astronomical theory of the Church, he believed that his scientific thoughts should not interfere with his religious beliefs.
Analysis of Galileo’s Letter to Grand-Duchess Christina During the time that Galileo wrote the letter to Grand-Duchess Christina, there was much debate about the orientation of the universe. There were two different theories of thought at this time. One was the Heliocentric Universe, which believed the sun was the center of the universe and the Earth orbits it.
According to the world history book from Bob Jones University, Galileo was a heretic, when it states “When Galileo published his findings, however, he also came into conflict with the Roman Catholic Church, which tried him for heresy.” I think the textbook was accurate in its belief that Galileo was a heretic because the definition of heresy is a “belief or opinion contrary to orthodox religious doctrine.” Galileo was an iconoclast because his theory that stated the earth revolved around the sun disagreed with the Roman Catholic Church’s belief of a geocentric galaxy. During the 16th and 17th century areas that were forbidden before began to change. These were areas were humans were only entitled to know what God wanted to reveal, otherwise they were inaccessible or forbidden. The limits on the knowledge humans were able to possess became more accessible during the 16th and 17th centuries. The Reformation shows the decline of the Catholic Church and the rise of questioning authority leading to the Scientific Revolution. The Scientific Revolution showed that observations and conclusions became an acceptable source of knowledge and truth, where it had been less so in earlier times.
Today virtually every child grows up learning that the Earth orbits the Sun, but four centuries ago the heliocentric solar system, where the Earth orbits the Sun, was so controversial that the Catholic Church classified it as a crime of heresy (UCLA). In the age of early philosophy, Socrates’ is well known. Between the Socratic method and his line of successful students, Socrates’ makes the history books. Galileo Galilei turned astronomers on their heads when he discovered moons around Jupiter. Giordano Bruno didn’t back down from any of his brilliant and different ideas.
The open-minded Galileo advocated that the earth revolves around the sun, with which few agreed during his lifetime,
“God, who has given the world to men in common, has also given them reason to make use of it to the best advantage of life and convenience” (Locke, 35). The Scientific Revolution concentrated on understanding the physical world through astronomical and mathematical calculations, or testable knowledge. The Enlightenment focused more on “Spreading of faith in reason and in universal rights and laws” (Worlds Together, Worlds Apart, 535). While the Scientific Revolution preceded the Enlightenment, both time periods sought to limit and challenge the power of the Church, through the spread of science, reason and intellect, and political philosophies. The Scientific Revolution began with Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1542) and Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) wanting to understand the movement of the planets beyond what they authorities had told them.
Dear Pope the leader of the church, you should let Isaac Newton out of prison because he was the one who changed the way we understand the universe. Isaac Newton is English physicist and mathematician. He discovered he is the one who discovered the gravity. You should let him out because he discovered gravity and he was the one who changed the way we understand the universe. To begin, he discovered gravity and developed the three laws of motion.
