The novel ‘Night’ written by Elie Wiesel and the film ‘Schindlers List’ directed by Steven Spielberg, are both based in World War 2 and more specifically the holocaust and the attempted cleanse of the Jewish race. These two texts both heavily demonstrate the horrors and brutalities that the Jewish people had faced during the holocaust. The two depictions of these events have many similarities although one being word and the other being film, however they differ in perspective, Schindlers List showing an outside look at the events where Night is a first person experience. In December 1939, Poland was being torn apart by the savagery of the Holocaust. Oskar Schindler took his first faltering steps from the darkness of Nazism towards the light of heroism. “If you saw a dog going to be crushed under a car,” he said later of his wartime actions, “wouldn't you help him?” Poland had been a relative haven for Jewish people and it numbered over 50,000 people, but when Germany invaded, destruction began immediately and it was very harsh. Jews was forced into crowded ghettos, randomly beaten and humiliated, and continuously murdered for no reason.

It demonstrates how Wiesel was affected by the Holocaust's atrocities both as a survivor and as a human, as his soul was consumed by the evil he had to face. This demonstrates how Elie Wiesel, a good man, was not immune to the Holocaust's impact and how it changed him, making him almost into a monster. The quote "What's more, if I felt anger at that moment, it was not directed at the Kapo but at my father. Why couldn't he have avoided Idek's wrath?

Simon Wiesenthal born on December 31, 1908, in Austria-Hungary, was a survivor of numerous Nazi concentration camps. Simon's experiences allow us to gain a deeper understanding of how the Holocaust has impacted his life. His experience profoundly impacted his mental & emotional health, the loss in his life and the influence it had on him to become a Nazi hunter. On July 6, 1941, Wiesenthal was arrested and taken to Brigidki Prison and managed to escape. After the escape he was forced to move to the ghettos and was eventually taken to the Janowska concentration camp.

Wiesel’s threat of death at every step causes him to lose his hope and innocence. Ellie goes through tragedies like watching children hang. Although, Ellie isn’t the only one who faced these horrors. The movie Life is Beautiful also captures the devastation of the Holocaust and its prisoners. Guido, a man sent to one of these camps with his son and wife has to survive the dangers.

Schindler did some very bad things in the beginning, he used slave labor for his profit and he schmoozed many people for his benefit. Though near the end he still schmoozed to get what he wanted, now it was for the benefit of the Jews that he was saving. Schindler change of character and attitude saved 1200 Jews. Families being torn apart, being ripped from everything they’ve known growing up and being isolated within a camp where no one truly knows what’s happening to them. That’s what was going on in the life of the Jews during WWII, they were being treated as if they were no longer human, being tossed in concentration camps and given just a number to identify them, completely taking away their self importance. The atrocities that occurred during the Holocaust are being subtly portrayed in the movie “The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas,”directed by Mark Herman, a story told from the eyes of an eight year old boy named Bruno and his unlikely friendship with a Jewish boy named Shmuel. The movie tells the story of how a young boy begins to realize what kind of solder his father truly is and what is going on during WWII as his parents had kept him enclosed in this idea that all is well in the world. Through the use of imagery, colors, and pathos Mark Herman successfully portrays the horrors of the Holocaust through the innocent and peculiar friendship of two nine year old boys, Bruno and Shmuel.

This book was very insightful into the lives of the people involved in the Holocaust. It showed that no matter how confident a person is about who they are, life is unpredictable, and people change. The Holocaust put many lives at risk while bringing others to an end. This piece was very effective in showing what the Holocaust was like, and what it took to survive. Elie Weisel, the writer of this book, gave the reader a personal account of his experiences as a Sightet Jew in the Holocaust.

During the time Elie Wiesel spent in the various concentration camps, it seems as though only the worst of events may occur, but Elie shows otherwise. He proves there is thoughtfulness and compassion in forms of words and actions. Elie is shown sympathy from a French girl, and the pure act of giving from his relative Stein. But in addition, a brave heart is willing to risk his life to save another person’s in the film The Pianist. Elie was in a unfortunate circumstance and was beaten for no apparent reason, and the French girl gave him hope.

The Holocaust was a horrible event in history that will scar humanity forever. With the events of the Holocaust being experienced by millions there are many different perspectives of said events. One such perspective is presented in Night, a memoir written by Elie Wiesel about his experiences as a young Jewish boy during the Holocaust. Another perspective is presented in Schindler’s List, a film directed by Steven Spielberg (based on the novel Schindler’s Ark by Thomas Keneally) about Oskar Schindler, a gentile who saves over one thousand Jewish lives during the Holocaust. Both pieces show heart wrenching stories of the abuse of a group of people in different ways, each using different mediums to convey their points.

Some argue the idea that before Schindler’s List,  his films like the Color Purple and Empire of the Sun which were serious films but some claim that the films were flawed in an attempt to maked the holocaust seem “more dramatic”. (Welsh The idea of this is absolutely false it is absurd and frankly sick to think that one would make one of the biggest human genocides “more dramatic” Others argue the reason that before Schindler’s list, Spielberg was a totally different actor. One film critic who reviewed the Sugarland Express, called Spielberg a “ commercial and shallow and impersonal. They called out the idea that Spielberg was more about marketing than the actual film. The horrendous acts committed during World War II still haunt people today. A lot of people did not realize the extent of the brutality that took place in concentration camps across the country until this film was released.
