Schindler's List Essay

In December 1939, Poland was being torn apart by the savagery of the Holocaust. Oskar Schindler took his first faltering steps from the darkness of Nazism towards the light of heroism. “If you saw a dog going to be crushed under a car,” he said later of his wartime actions, “wouldn't you help him?” Poland had been a relative haven for Jewish people and it numbered over 50,000 people, but when Germany invaded, destruction began immediately and it was very harsh. Jews was forced into crowded ghettos, randomly beaten and humiliated, and continuously murdered for no reason.

Oskar Schindler was one of the many heroes during the Holocaust. He was an average businessman looking for profit who started as a Nazi supporter. Oskar ended up saving Jews during the Holocaust by essentially hiding them in plain site. Oskar Schindler had a busy life and was the reason some Jews survived to live on passed the Holocaust. Oskar was born on April 28, 1908 in the city of Svitavy.

Simon Wiesenthal born on December 31, 1908, in Austria-Hungary, was a survivor of numerous Nazi concentration camps. Simon's experiences allow us to gain a deeper understanding of how the Holocaust has impacted his life. His experience profoundly impacted his mental & emotional health, the loss in his life and the influence it had on him to become a Nazi hunter. On July 6, 1941, Wiesenthal was arrested and taken to Brigidki Prison and managed to escape. After the escape he was forced to move to the ghettos and was eventually taken to the Janowska concentration camp.

There are many moments in life, where one has to make a choice, but there are only a few where one collides with a split second decision. You only have a few breaths, a minute at most, to decide what to do. Simon Wiesenthal's had many moments in his 96 years of life, which he was faced with choices , yet the one he made the day he spent on the bedside of a German soldier was undoubtedly a moment which shaped the rest of his life . Karl Seidl, a 22 year old German soldier told Simon of the deeds he committed, towards the jews. As the final attempt to cleanse himself of his actions, Seidl asked Wiesenthal for forgiveness.

The Jews in concentration camps during the Holocaust would witness numerous horrific events that would scar them and many would lose their families before they had the chance to be liberated. Buna, which was a labor camp that was part of Auschwitz, was liberated by the Red Army on January 27th, 1945. The Red Army was able to free whoever was left in these camps and would discover the horrific conditions, most of the inhabitants including Elie Wiesel, had been forced to endure. The largest subcamp of Auschwitz, known as Buna, had been built by I.G. Farben in October of 1942.

During the holocaust there were tons of horrible things going on, but there were still a few people who tried to make things better. In this research essay I am going to talk about the heroes that really caught my eye by the things they’ve done to try and make things better. Irene was born in Poland into a Catholic family. Although Adolf Hitler’s statements successfully convinced and appealed to almost all the people in the Germanic nation, his arguments, however, are undoubtedly loaded with logical fallacies. In Chapter 11 of the autobiography, Hitler mainly focuses on his notions regarding racial superiority.

Schindler’s List, directed by Steven Spielberg and based on the book Schindler’s Ark, is a film that does not portray exact historical accuracy. Oskar Schindler was a real person, but despite the film’s portrayal that he could name the names of every person he wanted to save, he could actually only name the names of those who visited his office frequently. Despite the film’s portrayal that the people who worked in Schindler’s factory were primarily Jewish, in actuality the majority of Schindler’s factory workers were Polish. Schindler’s attempts of befriending the Nazi party is also a false portrayal in the movie as in actuality Schindler already knew these men from working in the German Counterintelligence Services as a spy from 1935 to 1939.

Both Steven Spielberg’s Schindler’s list and Polanski’s The Pianist have impacted society understanding of the Holocaust and the unjust treatment of the Jews, not to mention the ungodly acts of the Nazi’s towards the Jewish community. In particular Steven Spielberg’s Schindler’s List disregarded the social norms of film in the 90’s, approaching a sensitive topic head, disregarding numerous request not, synthesising a film illustrating the actions of Oskar Schindler. Winning seven academy awards, Schindler’s List transformed the education system, instigating the change of the curriculum in the United States from The Holocaust being a minor aspect of World War 2, to teachers educating students about the bleak history of The Holocaust, using The

Schindler did some very bad things in the beginning, he used slave labor for his profit and he schmoozed many people for his benefit. Though near the end he still schmoozed to get what he wanted, now it was for the benefit of the Jews that he was saving. Schindler change of character and attitude saved 1200 Jews. Schindler changed a lot and because of that many generations of the jews he saved lived

Throughout history governments have evolved in their laws and ruling tactics. It has also changed the way literature has been portrayed to the readers. This essay is based on Totalitarian government. Totalitarianism is a form of government that whereabouts the fact that the ruler and government is an absolute control over the state. Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin and Benito Mussolini are some of the dictators that had total control over the people and state.

Throughout Schindler’s List by Steven Spielberg, Oskar Schindler’s character has changed drastically. At the beginning of World War II, Schindler was a womanizing, selfish and manipulative man. After seeing the process that he watched the Jews go through, he realizes the way the Nazis have treated them is unacceptable. Towards the end of the war Schindler has grown due to the experiences he has been through. These experiences have made him a decent, unselfish, and manipulative man.

Some argue the idea that before Schindler’s List,  his films like the Color Purple and Empire of the Sun which were serious films but some claim that the films were flawed in an attempt to maked the holocaust seem “more dramatic”. (Welsh The idea of this is absolutely false it is absurd and frankly sick to think that one would make one of the biggest human genocides “more dramatic” Others argue the reason that before Schindler’s list, Spielberg was a totally different actor. One film critic who reviewed the Sugarland Express, called Spielberg a “ commercial and shallow and impersonal. They called out the idea that Spielberg was more about marketing than the actual film. (Manchel 26).

People to this day still find horror and beauty in this film, finding this film an extraordinary masterpiece executed by director, Steven Spielberg. Some people do disagree with the images shown in the film, however, as a whole, the entire community who thoroughly enjoys films agree the accuracy of this film that did not hold back any viewing content truly added greatly to the film. Perhaps the most touching reaction came from the place where it all started. The premiere of Schindler’s List in Germany with a room filled with 800 people – Germans and Jews, diplomats and artists, film makers and people who had known Oskar Schindler when he lived there (Whitney, 1994).
