Savagery In Lord Of The Flies, By William Golding

It is said that most people if put in a particular situation they would not do things they would normally. In the novel Lord Of The Flies, by W.Golding, a group of young boys are stranded on an isolated island cut off from society, having no adults or figures of authority on the island, the boys become savage. Examples of such savagery would be the murders, the cruelty of Jack, and how even Ralph could succumb to it as well Ralph, the voice of civilization throughout the novel even is able to succumb to the dark desires within him, similar to Jack. When Jack has one of his pig hunts Ralph joins in as well, and becomes quite engrossed with it, I hit him, said Ralph again, and the spear stuck in a bit.

John Locke would not approve what happened on the island because the hunters killed Simon and Piggy, they stole Piggy's glasses and they forced some people into consent. The first reason John Locke would not approve what happened on the island is that they killed Simon and people. For example Jack's group thought Simon was the beast and they killed him and they killed piggy by dropping a big rock on him.(Lord of the Flies)

Social Destruction Lord of the flies is based on British boys getting stuck on a uninhabited island along comes the destruction of their small society. Upon landing, the boys attempt to establish a society with law and order. Although the boys get rescued at the end of the story, Golding uses Ralph and Jack to argue how savagery and the loss of civility leads to the destruction of society. While jack goes on a hunt he puts on war paint, he discovers that the mask he wears cover up his identity and insecurities. The conch represents civility once the boys stop respecting the conch their society starts to collapse.

Although it may seem that some kids are more independent than others, all children require some parental supervision. Lord of the Flies by William Golding tells the story of a group of young boys stranded on an island after an airplane crash. They attempt to build their stable sense of society, however without adult supervision, chaos and violence occur. In the novel, Golding illustrates the negative nature of society through the physical state of the island.

The boys in Lord of the Flies acted savagely and immorally due to biological factors because it is human nature to turn on each other. The thing people call savagery still lives to this day in disguises such as terrorists, serial killers, and many more people that act in a defective way. Golding believed that anyone is capable of becoming a Nazi, explaining it in the book “Lord of The Flies” that when people are given circumstances and time they can become a Nazi. Golding revels many different symbols such as the Beast, the Face Paint, Roger, and Hunting. Two symbols that Golding emphasizes on are the Beast and the Face Paint. The Beast is the evil within that everyone contains deep inside of them.

In William Golding's The Lord of the Flies, boys trapped on an island turn into deranged savages and kill each other after they fail to follow the rules of their made-up tribe. Cruelty is used by Golding as a way to communicate his theme which could be that cruelty is in nearly everybody, but civilization’s laws and control prevent that trait from prevailing. The author leaves some evidence of him trying to convey this theme throughout the book. A part of the book that shows this theme being shown would be the demise of Piggy and civilization.

Savagery being a Symbolism in Jack Merridew In the book Lord of the Flies, William Golding makes us believe that we are all truly savages when away from society. This is mainly demonstrated from the character Jack Merridew throughout this novel. At the beginning of this book Jack and a group of young schoolboys get shot down from their plane onto an deserted island with no adult survivors. As they arrive onto the island they quickly decide to pick a chief to maintain order.

Martin once said, “There is a savage beast in every man, and when you hand that man a sword or spear and send him forth to war, the beast stirs.” William Golding demonstrates that every person has savagery inside of him in his novel, Lord of the Flies. In this novel, Golding shows us that civilization is lost and savagery begins when the urge to kill takes hold of us. William Golding’s character development of Jack and motif of weapons help develop his point.

Lord of the Flies follows the story of a group of sophisticated boys that drastically change over the course of their time being stranded on a deserted island. When their plane is shot out of the sky, and they are the only survivors, the seven boys are forced to learn the ropes of keeping order throughout themselves.

It has been said several times throughout history that human nature is constitutionally a negative force. This is further shown in William Golding’s novel Lord of the Flies when numerous young boys aged twelve and under are stranded on an island after a plane crash during World War 2. These children abandon all civilization and grow more savage as the literature progresses. The main boys: Ralph, Simon, Piggy, and Jack change exponentially throughout the novel, gradually losing themselves and any culture they had. Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, depicts human nature’s inherent evil and man’s inability to escape it.

Human behaviors are easy to be changed by the experiences and environment. As the time passes by, the changed behaviors can be worse or better than before. However, most people become worse because of the specific experiences in their life time. In Lord of the Flies, the changes of behavior are occurred obviously in the characters of Jack, Roger, and Ralph.

What causes savagery behavior ? Biology can make people do bad things. It can cause savage and immoral behavior. Just like in the novel The Lord of the Flies. In the book, The Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, he writes about character who are kids whose plane has crashed on an island.

William Golding uses the theme that humans are naturally bad at heart, in the book Lord of the Flies to highlight that without the order and respect we choose to live our daily lives with our human nature will ultimately take us into chaos and savagery. Morals are what we choose to live by, this is what keeps us accountable. Morals do not appear overnight. Overtime they are ingrained throughout our childhood. Giving us a sense of right and wrong.

Throughout the novel of Lord of the Flies, William Golding provides a profound insight into human nature. Golding builds on a message that all human beings have natural evil inside them. To emphasize, the innate evil is revealed when there’s lack of civilization. The boys are constantly faced with numerous fears and eventually break up into two different groups. Although the boys believe the beast lives in the jungle, Golding makes it clear that it lurks in their hearts.
