Freeing artists from traditional painting and sculpture, surrealism was an art movement founded in Paris in 1924 .Inner thoughts were explored, the subconscious and the imagination were the main tools used to create a new surreal world based on these suppressed thoughts and fantasies. Surrealism was a reflection of Freud’s study of psychoanalysis, in which he provides an explanation on how dreams are sources of knowledge and shows the battle between conscious ideas and unconscious hidden desires. Surrealist artists were inspired to explore this dark thread and uncover the mysterious world of desires and fantasies. This art movement evolved and spread to other countries continuing throughout the 20th century. Salvador Dali, a Spanish painter, …show more content…
This exploration of the unconscious on the canvas is what he called his “ paranoiac-critical method”; where he takes some elements experienced in his state of unconsciousness and represent them in his paintings as realistically as possible so that the viewer can interpret it in his own way, using his own experience of the unconscious. He also states that his method is simply the organization of his inner thoughts represented through the balance between subjectivity and objectivity, by relating unusual objects together and using optical illusions . Dali wanted to explore this hidden realm, to discover any personal fears or traumas, that will further help him understand this part of our mind and furthermore represent it in his paintings. He strove to relate dreams to reality to reach the state of ‘ sur-reality’. Just like Freud, Dali explained that dreams come from the subconscious part of the mind, representing suppressed ideas that are usually considered taboo in the real word we live in. “The Great Masturbator” an oil on canvas was painted in 1929, it is a representation of Dali’s sexuality and his …show more content…
It is the exploration of part of our mind that our reality is unaware of. This movement helped artist explore new techniques and methods, encouraging them to explore new concepts. Its main goal was to depict a new world composed of our hidden ideas and fantasies, mostly based on our dreams. Influenced by Freud’s study and interpretation of dreams Salvador Dali based himself on psychoanalytical studies to create compositions representing his surreality. In order to accomplish a surreal painting, Dali focused solely on the unconscious part of his mind to uncover its hidden messages, using a method called the ' paranoiac critical method’ as seen in “The Great Masturbator. As for the technical part of his paintings, Dali based himself on mathematics and physics studies to represent figures in a more realistic way. He was influenced greatly by quantum mechanics and the study of perception and dimension that helped him find a balance between irrational ideas and realistic representation as seen in his series of paintings that are related to his religious beliefs; “Christ of saint john of the cross”, and “Crucifixion”. Symbolism was also present in his paintings, some of them were used to represent ideas and others to refer to a memory found in his subconscious. They were often repeated in several paintings and held hidden messages.Dali’s painting held dark themes and represented landscapes and weird figures

Mashing together surrealism, the many figures from Millet’s The Angelus painting, with nuclear mysticism (i.e. the dissolving flies), this large scale canvas is all over the place stylistically and chronologically. It contains a poignant double image of two very interesting and disparate characters: Venus de Milo and Manolete.

Psychic automatism in its pure state, by which one proposes to express – verbally, by means of the written word, or in any other manner – the actual functioning of thought. Dictated by the thought, in the absence of any control exercised by reason, exempt from any aesthetic or moral concern (André Breton, 1924). French poet André Breton (1896 – 1966), founder of surrealism, has described his own vision of the future in the ‘First Manifesto of Surrealism’ (1924). His intensions were to bring about a profound revolution and help artists produce works freely from culturally enforced norms. This paper will address the key factors regarding surrealism by explaining its most popular methods, its goals, the historical events and founders and lastly, its impact on art and other areas.

There are many overwhelming contrasting views on the idea of gender roles and we see that in Dalí’s paintings where many of his early work were based on fear and loathing of the opposite sex. The Perception of Memory is an oil on canvas painting, depicting several melted clocks in a desert-like environment. Dali evokes a sense of stillness and quietness in the environment by presenting a lot of negative space, and a featureless objects such as the sky. We also get a sense of stillness because the water has no ripples or waves. The objects depicted in the painting are not naturalistic, because of their organic nature. For example, there is a dead tree that is growing out of a table-top.
TOPIC 9 Andre Breton, who wrote the Surrealist Manifesto, remarked that beauty in a Surrealist sense is encountered by “the unexpected meeting, on a dissection table, of a sewing machine and an umbrella.” How would you interpret this? How would you relate this to the works by Surrealist artists? Refer to specific compositions in your discussion. AIK XUAN XUN EZRA, A0124669W 24 October 2014 “Surrealism was a means of reuniting conscious and unconscious realms of experience so completely, that the world of dream and fantasy would be joined to the everyday rational world in an absolute reality, a surreality.”

Moreover, surrealist art is continuously created in the twenty-first century, and the artistic skills that were created by surrealist pioneers are still affected the twenty-first century. For instance, surrealist artists have created a series of painting techniques that are specifically used in surrealist artworks, such as automatic drawing and frottage. More specifically, André Masson created a surrealistic painting technique in the year 1924 named the automatic drawing, which requires the artist excludes the intentional arrangement of rationality and draws a series of lines. Then, the artist creates the further images which based on these random lines. Afterwards, in the year 1925, Marx Ernst invented a new painting skill named frottage.
To achieve this, several Dali paintings used these ‘double’ images to confuse and disturb people looking at them. An example of where this can be seen within his work is in one of his most prominent pieces of artwork ‘The Persistent of Memory’. This image depicts a watch flopping over what appears to be a strange, paled-coloured rock. Observing the image more closely, nonetheless, it could be suggested that the image is a clear representation of Dali’s personality traits. It is important to remember that his paranoia and anxiety are traits that various people remember him by.
