What Caused The Salem Witch Trials?
As we were sitting in the courtroom I could feel everyone staring at me like a was a serial killer about to be put away for life. However, what I was about to endure was much worse than that I was about to be hung for being a witch the worst crime to be accused of. As we were sitting there all I could think about was the 19 before me to be hung because of being accused of being witches and I was about to be next to die a cruel cold death.
The Salem Witch Trials took place in Massachusetts between 1692 and 1693. During the Trials 20 people were put to death and more than 200 accused for practicing witchcraft. Among those accused were Abigail Williams and Anna Putnam who just experienced fits or uncontrollable

N). Also it says that the Putnam farm had large amounts of the plant and two of the afflicted girls lived on his property (Doc. N). This is how the plant could have caused the girls to get accused of being a witch because they were around the plant so much that they developed symptoms from the plant. Another reason why the plant had the history of plant and the Putnam’s land was located in the contamination zone as stated in(Doc. N). Which could have led to the two girls being accused. This is how the plant can be related to The Salem Witch Trials and the …show more content…
This is shown by most of the accused were over the age of 40 and married while most of the accusers were women under the age of 20 and single as stated in (Doc. E). Also the teen girls would frame the older women such as acting afflicted while a women they wanted to accuse was around by acting strange and copying her. This is shown “As soon as she came near, all(afflicted girls) fell into fit…”Then she turned up her eyes, and the eyes of the afflicted were turned up.”(Doc.F). This shows that the teen girls started to act strange while the accused Bridget Bishop came over they all freaked out. This could be to show that she was a witch and they should hang her because they all freaked out to show everyone that she was a witch while they were only
\The infamous Salem witch trials, you may have heard of them, but do you know about the famous event which many book, movies, and even its own T.V. show are revolved around. From June through September of 1692, nineteen men and women all been accused of witchcraft, were brought to Gallows Hill. Gallows Hills is also known as witch hill that is where they killed all the men and women accused. Now you may be thinking what they did that was so bad it’s just witchcraft, it was a common belief that people could pledge allegiance to Satan and become witches with supernatural power to harm others. The thing that made people start this witch hunt would be when nine-year-old Elizabeth Parris and eleven-year-old Abigail Williams the daughter and niece
The reasons that made me believe this were the age, where they lived, and jealousy. To start, if you examine each document you start to notice patterns. The most common pattern I found was between the accusers and the accused. In document 5 it states the gender, age, and relationship of both accusers and accused.
When these girls were caught they accused other people of practicing witchcraft, and of course the people they accused denied it all. All of the rumors and witchcraft went on for so long that the court decided it was enough. A private court hearing was called to sentence all of the
One reason the witch trials transpired was a result of jealousy. The accusers were primarily single women over the age of 16 (Document B). The ones who were accused primarily were married women over the age of 21 (Document B). The accusing women may have been envious of the other women’s marriage.
Well let's take this from where it all began. The First Trails The Salem Witch Trials began during the spring of 1692, A group of young girls in Salem Village Massachusetts, were claimed to be taken over by the devil then accused other women in the town of being possessed also. This whole epidemic spread through colonial Massachusetts. A court that was in Salem was chosen to hear about these cases, the first convicted witch was Bridget Bishop she was hung that June.
People were afraid that there were more witches on the prowl, so they started to accuse everyone of witchcraft. The people did a mass hanging on “July 19[, putting] Sarah Good... Elizabeth Howe... Susannah Martin…{and] Rebecca Nurse” to death. The purpose of these mass hangings is to make it easier to hang people and also to provide relief that quite a number of witches are being hanged.
This evidence helps explain the jealousy and boredom the young girls experienced during this period of time, Another possible cause for the Salem witch trials was that the girls were great liars and
So now everyone is scared and freaking out which is really the start of the mass hysteria. It turns into everyone accusing others of being a witch. Whether it be because they don’t like them or just because they want their land. Either way they start accusing everyone, and the girls were seen as “proof.” So, if they didn’t like the person, when they were brought into court they would start screaming, falling or even “fainting.”
This jealousy was created from other’s female gender, age and marital status. Based on document B provided, the accusers were around the age of 16-20, female, and accused mostly women (41-60), that were married of being a witch. Drawing to a conclusion, the accusers, younger and single girls, were jealous of old, married women who had their future set for them
Salem, Massachusetts, USA and occurred between February 1692 and May 1693. Over 150 people were arrested and imprisoned and even more accused; but not pursued by the authorities. 29 were convicted of witchcraft but only 19 were hanged. The best known trials were in the Court of Oyer and Terminer.
This paragraph is going to tell us that women were the ones accused more than men. In document B for evidence, document B has tables that show the accusers and accused. 110 out of 134 accused were women, 29 out of 34 accusers were women. The table about the ages shows that 27 out of 29 accusers were women.
The Salem witch trial hysteria of 1692 may have been instigated by religious, social, geographic and even biological factors. During these trials, 134 people were condemned as witches and 19 were hanged. These statistics also include 5 more deaths that occurred prior to their execution date. It is interesting to look into the causes of this stain on American History, when as shown in document B, eight citizens were hanged in only one day.
Imagine being a wealthy 45-year-old woman in 1692 being accused of being a witch. The Salem Witch trials were caused by jealousy, fear, and lying. People believed that the devil was real and that one of his tricks was to enter a normal person 's body and turn that person into a witch. This caused many deaths and became a serious problem in 1692. First of all, jealousy was one of the causes of the Salem witch trials.
Revenge, Everybody has done it. Revenge is defined as’’ the action of inflicting hurt or harm on someone for an injury or wrong suffered at their hands’’. What I believe is that parents of the “suffering” children had an argument with another family. This resulted in the parents to blame the others of being witches or conjurers. It was the perfect way to get revenge and nobody would suspect it.
Also after that day in the woods betty couldn’t sit there and listen to god's words or name and that was a sign of being bewitched. Another wrong act Abigail had done wrong was drink blood that day in the woods. At the end of ACT 1 Tituba had confessed to being a witch because they were going to whip her to death. Also at the end ACT 1 the girls started naming people and blaming them for witchcraft so they wouldn't get caught
