Mark Overby says, “Love is much like a wild rose, beautiful and calm, but willing to draw blood in its defense.” Love, a magnificent and wonderful emotion, not only includes admiration, but requires sacrifice. William Shakespeare’s play, Romeo and Juliet, revolves around the children of two rival families, the Montagues and the Capulets. This feud even has the citizens of the town, Verona, involved in this ancient rivalry. The children, Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet, fall deeply into a love that is forbidden. After Juliet’s party, Romeo sneaks into the Capulets’ garden to be with Juliet. She says that because they are of rival families, they cannot openly love one another. In response to Juliet, Romeo declares, “Call me but love, and I’ll be new baptized. / Henceforth I never will be Romeo” (2.2.54-55). Romeo vows he loves Juliet with so much devotion that he would deny his name for her. Juliet hears Romeo’s voice and wonders who is speaking and why he is in her garden. Juliet tells Romeo that if any of their kinsmen see them together their kinsmen will murder Romeo. He then replies, “My life were better ended by their hate / Than death proroguèd, wanting of thy love” (2.2.82-82). Romeo would rather have the kinsmen kill him than live without Juliet and her love. The two carry on in their discussion about their love for each other. Juliet suggests to Romeo, “If that thy bent of love be honorable, / Thy purpose marriage, send me word tomorrow” (2.2.150-151). Juliet has much love for Romeo and wants Romeo to have the same for her. Juliet tells Romeo that if he truly loves her, they should marry tomorrow. “Romeo and Juliet”, a play written by William Shakespeare, is a story of the relationship of two youth. The two youth from opposing families, Romeo and Juliet, rush into an immature love relationship with one another. Possibly due to their tragic flaws, their story ends in tragedy. Although this may prove true, many other characters may have unintentionally impacted the outcome of these two lovers’ association. One major character who unintentionally may have caused the tragic deaths of Romeo and Juliet is Friar Laurence.
Romeo and Juliet is a play about star-crossed lovers. Romeo is apart of a high class Montague family; their rival is the Capulet family. Romeo falls in love with the daughter of Lord Capulet. They want to get married but they know that this will not be approved between their family feud. This is why they secretly ask Friar Laurence to marry them in secret.
Early in the play, when Romeo is listening in on Juliet’s soliloquy on the balcony, Juliet says she wishes Romeo had some other name. Romeo immediately steps forward and replies, “Call me but love and I’ll be baptized. Henceforth, I never will be Romeo” (2.2.54). Although Romeo and Juliet have met just that very night, Romeo is already ready to forsake his family name, a source of great pride, and begin a new life with a girl he barely knows. Romeo and Juliet met only three days before he decided that he wanted to marry Juliet. To tell Juliet about this he sends Juliet’s Nurse with a message telling her where to go so they can get married to each other, without even asking her father or thinking if this was a good idea or not. “And there she shall at Friar Laurence’s cell be shriveled and married” (Shakespeare, Act 2, Scene 4, Line 184-185). This idea shows how even though they met very recently, they are so immature to think that they are in love and should get married. The purpose of the quote is to show how dangerous young love is because of the immaturity it holds, like how quickly they are to marry each other is dangerous because it could get them both into serious trouble.

In reference to the bold statements of the younglings throughout the play, Romeo and Juliet, it could be said that they were willing to ‘risk it all’, despite the circumstances they were under. These two lovers, being described as “star-crossed”, propelled the storyline in a way that was facile for conflicts to form, all of which were a result of their forbidden love (Prologue 5). Over the short course of time during the period in which their story had taken place, Shakespeare asserted the impression that all these conflicts were caused by a cruel overwhelming fate, sheer accident, and by their own willfulness. All these facets of the plot coalesced and attributed to the bringing about of Romeo and Juliet’s untimely and unfortunate death.
