Sacrifice In J. Herbert's The Backwards

In the short story “The Major Leagues Here We Come,” author Tyson Kogel reveals the story of how a high school phenom experiences major ups and downs on the way of becoming a MLB player. Brock’s a senior that attends Las Vegas Academy High School and loves baseball and puts in countless hours of practice and hard work. Brock has been invited to attend a couple showcases before the MLB draft. The first showcase went exactly how he wanted it too. After the first showcase when he was boarding the plane his father congratulated him on the performance.

The book shows us another way to write. Being serious, informative, and humorous all together. It shows us a creative way to title our paragraphs and what he writes on the margins helps us with how to use the information he gave

The Boston Red Sox were three games down. The Red Sox had to win the next four games to advance. Fans were worried. Boston had not won a World Series since 1918. No team had ever come back in the playoffs from a three-game deficit.

The story plot that the novel contained flew in ease and understanding to one’s familiarity. But what was amazing what his form of playing with diction too that surprised me the most asides the tricks he played with imagery. Without imagery, a book would pretty much have no meaning and would lose the sense of reading it till the very end. And what I loved about the author was that he kept on putting in words purposely in the right place at the right time of keep you in the game of entertainment. For example in quote’s like, “The guard with no rifle came to the rear of the truck.

He eloquently depicts how hectic and emotional misery lane was. Revealing how relatives were forced to identify the charred bodies of their loved ones. How they were forced to inspect all the bodies just to find the smallest strand of evidence to identify their loved ones. This draws you into the book and keeps you hooked

This book was interesting for me because it allowed me to relate to a character. I love reading novels that not only allow me to feel a connection with a character, but allow me to relate to their personality or

The books manages to tell a very well crafted story, while not using many types of settings. The author used great writing techniques which made you want to keep reading. The book accomplished to be a great science fiction novel that was entertaining. The story is great even though it is hard to follow it at times. The author had many great story dynamics like Ender trying not to be like Peter or how Ender always figures out a clever way of resolving a problem.

Saunders’ style of writing exudes confidence. He, like many other great writers, has gone beyond having excellent and total control of prose. Through trial and error, Saunders has mastered the art of creating an entertaining story without ever losing control of it. One can see this via his purposeful use of literary/rhetorical devices, like point of view and repetition, within his stories. As one begins to find what Saunders has hidden through these devices, one receives a jolt of satisfaction that entices one to continue reading.

He also uses a lot of metaphors and similes that makes the story fun and nice to read. An example for this is when Bud saying this: " Todd started huffing and puffing with his eyes bucking out of his head and his chest going up and down so hard that it looked like some kind of big animal was inside of him trying to bust out.". The author used a simile here stating that his chest looked like there was a "big animal" coming out from it. The simile helps us further imagine on what is happening to Todd and gives more drama on that

In the novel the Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini he illustrates the sacrifice one gives for love. Over the course of the novel Amir, Hassan, and Baba all face dramatic events that shape them to the person they are. Each one of them sacrifice a piece of their own happiness for the one they love. Hassan is loyal to Amir even though in their childhood Amir was not a good friend. Baba sacrifices his life in Afghanistan for Amir to have an education in America.

He seems very invested in his writing which makes the reader enjoy the book. Those literary devices help make the story fun to read and interesting. Imagery “ The last thing I remember is collapsing on a wooden porch, looking up at a ceiling fan circling above me, moths flying around the yellow, light, and the stern faces of a familiar looking bearded man and a pretty girl (56)” Even if the reader has no idea what is going on, based on the clear imagery given on they can guess what is happening and where.

The story and the characters really stood out to me. They really expressed themselves and the setting in the story was very cool to learn about. I enjoyed the pictures in the book because they guide the reader into the setting and the time period in the book. I recommend this book to people who are interested in learning about World War II and people who are interested in biographies and survival stories. One of my favorite quotes from the book was “A lifetime of glory is worth a moment of pain.”

Sacrifice, one the most prominent themes in Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner, clearly determines a person’s unconditional love and complete fidelity for another individual. Hosseini’s best-selling novel recounts the events of Amir’s life from childhood to adulthood. Deprived of his father’s approval and unsure of his relationship with Hassan, Amir commits treacherous acts which he later regrets and attempts to search for redemption. These distressing occurrences throughout his youth serve as an aid during his transition from a selfish child to an altruistic adult.

Also this book was easy to understand and did not take too long to read. At the end of the novel Gene explains that Finny was different because of his lack of fear. I liked this ending because it is interesting to read about a teenager that has no fear. For the text to text, text to self and text to world connections are all kind of similar in this book.

I also enjoyed the books quick and light-heated nature of the story. Even the books darker moments had a whimsical twist. My only major criticism of the book is that I felt that some parts of the book where drawn out a little too long and that more time was spent of certain scenes than necessary. Some of the more archaic writing conventions can be difficult to understand at times. Those who enjoy a more upbeat and whimsical story but also want to experience a grand adventure would enjoy this book.
