Ruta Sepetys is an extraordinary author who has written a few books, which are all compelling historical fiction books. She tends to write to both entertain and inform people. Ruta does this through manipulating the stories of Lithuanian citizens during World War Two. Her books Between Shades of Gray and Salt to the Sea are both undoubtedly similar yet different stories about the fight against the Russians.

I would recommend both Between Shades of Gray and Salt to the Sea to young adults interested in war stories. These books don’t show how hard the way war is on the soldiers, but instead how devastating it was to the citizens. Ruta Sepetys’ books are historical fiction, making them not only interesting but extremely informative. For example, many people have never heard of the Wilhelm Gustloff, yet it was the largest maritime disaster in history. Ruta’s books all are very engaging stories that lead up to an overall idea of the struggles Lithuanians faced during the second world war. I would recommend Ruta Sepetys’ books because, as Elizabeth Wein exclaimed, “Ruta Sepetys is a master of historical

Ever since my great grandpa told me about it I have watched movies and played games about it. Though I have never really read books about it except for informational ones, This book might change that for me. It was a really interesting read and I’m glad you had our class read it. Undoubtedly , WW1 was the first utmost military conflict in the modern times that has evoked variety of literary responses which reflect the sociopolitical and psychological background of that time and are considered as vital part of the historical and cultural memory of WW1 . War poetry has provided us with variety of images of the war and the battlefield by men who have experienced the reality of war face-to-face. “Soldiers Home” by Ernest Hemingway and “Speaking of Courage” by Tim O’Brien both deal with the difficulties of veterans returning home from war. Both of the protagonists, Krebs and Bowker respectively, experience trauma, which leads them on a search for self-discovery and an outlet for their pain. At the end of each story, neither of the characters wants to participate in society anymore. Despite the similarities, Norman Bowker is more forthcoming with his feelings, ultimately making him a more successful character. In addition, the similarities and differences between the authors’ styles accentuate those that occur within the characters of the stories; both authors use symbolism to show the changes in the dynamic characters over the course of the narratives.

This book depicts how even the royal woman are beaten, executed and enslaved by their fathers, sons and husbands. It paints a shady image of the Saudi society in our minds showing the different shadows of grays in a colorful pallet. For example the book tells about a Fillipino woman who had shifted to Saudi Arabia to work as a servant in one of the ‘reputed rich families’, later realizing that her duties also consisted of pleasing the employer and his two sons sexually.
