In life it is oftentimes seen that unrestrained greed in an individual can dominate a person and cause them to lose all moral values. It has long been known that greed can easily lead to a person's change in behavior, it can change how they act and even the way they talk. In the text Rumpelstiltskin by the Grimm brothers, greediness can be seen within the king's character, he gradually becomes greedier as he acquires more gold. This extended response's aim is to discuss how unrestrained greed in a person can cause them to become self-centered and selfish and eventually ignore how their actions can harm others. Greed changes the brain of a person; they will easily begin to compromise their ethics with the aim of bettering themselves. It is evident within the text Rumpelstiltskin as we see the development of the king’s greediness, as he is given more wealth by the miller’s daughter. Megalomania is extremely apparent within the text Rumpelstiltskin when the king states the sentence, “All this must be spun into gold before morning, if you value your life.” Here we see the king not only portray his greed in the form of asking an unreasonable task, but also that he is using threats to further his ask. This links back to my introduction, where I stated that at some point greedy people reach a state that causes them to lose ethics and moral values. The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien has many characters that fit the role of succumbing to a kind of power. When Bilbo has to go on that treacherous journey to slay the dragon with the dwarves and regain all the treasure under the mountain. This will show how some of those characters came into that power. The whole town is full of everything wrong with society many of the characters represent how we are failing in life while a few others show what we are doing right. From racism to being rude to people who are different this book outs everything that we have done wrong with history and all the mockingbirds that we have killed. Racism is a misdeed that keeps on showing up in the book, Calpurnia keeps on showing Jem and Scout about how the African American society is treated.
Another example of greed that is satirized in this novel is when the King and duke commit fraud several times to get rich. The king and duke put on these play that where cheesy and lame, and charged people to watch them. After that they went up river and found out that a man just died and the family was waiting on some kin folk from England to come in, and there was talk of money being left to them. So they found out everything they could from a man and decided to act like they were the kin folk. They had a plan, a pretty good one at that.
If people control their greed, they will be bountiful in other ways than wealth. They will have happiness in helping others by giving back, instead of keeping to oneself. If the greed is too large you will experience a lot of negative impacts. In doing so, the dwarves let the dream and thought of wealth consume and over power them.
