As shown in the play strong emotions have tragic consequences, but does this mean Romeo is a tragic hero? Romeo is not a tragic hero even though he exhibits three out of the five characteristics to be a tragic hero, which are being noble, having a tragic flaw, and experiencing a reversal of fortune but does not exhibit catharsis or the audience does not feel pity for him. In the play, we see the reversal of fortune when Romeo finds Juliet and marries her but kills Tybalt and is banished, ruining his marriage. This is shown when the Prince states, “I beg for justice, which thou, prince, must give. Romeo slew Tybalt; Romeo must not live.” (Shakespeare 3.1.190). The audience sees Romeo kill Tybalt and eventually gets banished from the town of Verona. On the day of his wedding, Friar Laurence insisted him to take things slowly, but still, Romeo played a deaf ear to the advice. After the wedding, Romeo got into the fight with Tybalt who is the cousin of Juliet, and killed Tybalt later on for a revenge of his friend Mercutio's death. He did not thoroughly think about the consequences of his impulse actions with his new identity of Juliet’s husband. As the husband of Juliet, he should consider himself as a part of the Capulet family, who should never harm any of the family members. As a result of killing Tybalt, he got banished out of Verona, which triggered the series of irreversible consequence to occur.
Regardless, Romeo does not wish to fight and instead tries to make peace with him because of his marriage with Tybalt’s cousin. The fact that Romeo is not willing to fight back enrages Mercutio and leads to Tybalt killing him. Which then results in Romeo avenging Mercutio and killing Tybalt. Romeo then gets banished which causes Juliet to seek help from the Friar and so forth. Tybalt had no real reason to kill Romeo, but he did and because of his actions, he causes a chain reaction that contributes to the death of Romeo and
