Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is a well-known play taught in classrooms across the globe. It is regarded as a story of great love and tragedy. The namesake characters are lovers from different families who despise each other. That is why many people believe that the story is about how they were doomed from the start. Although many people believe that it is fate that determines our future, especially Romeo and Juliet’s, it is decisions that determine someone’s future. First, let’s discuss the other side. People believe that Romeo and Juliet had no control over their future because they couldn’t help that their families were feuding. This is talked about at the beginning of the play. “Two households, both alike in dignity,...From ancient …show more content…
The two lovers could have decided that they shouldn’t be together. Rome says this when they meet at the ball. “Sin from my lips? O trespass sweetly urged! Give me my sin again”(Shakespeare 3.5.109). Romeo says this because he knows that Juliet is a Montague and their families would not like them to be together. However, instead of recognizing the fault in this newfound relationship, they agreed to get married without their parents knowing. They decided to get married so that if their parents were to separate them, it would be difficult to do so. Another instance of characters choosing love when they know there is danger is when in West Side Story, a musical based on Romeo and Juliet, Maria tells Tony to stop the rumble. Maria tells him to do so because she knows that people will get hurt because of it. If Tony and Maria had realized they shouldn’t be together since they come from rival gangs, they would’ve saved multiple lives. Still, they couldn’t help themselves, and look what …show more content…
People claim the reason that they died is that they couldn’t live without each other and that they had to do this for love. But both Romeo and Juliet had a choice; they both chose to die at their hand. When Romeo discovers Juliet seemingly dead, he decides he must die because he can’t be without her and drinks the poison. “Here’s to my love…thus with a kiss I die” Romeo had a choice in drinking the poison as it’s not like someone was forcing him to drink it. However, if he had not been blinded by love, he would have realized that she was not dead and only pretending. If he had discovered that she wasn’t dead, he would’ve spared himself; and Juliet. Once Juliet wakes up and sees Romeo dead, she then kills herself. “This is thy sheath; there rust, and let me die”(Shakespeare 5.3.170). She only did this because she was so overwhelmed that she couldn’t think of anything else to
When people are in love they most likely do things to rash and quick without thinking of the consequences in the future or how it will affect everyone else in their lives. This is Romeo and Juliet, they decided they were so in love they wanted to marry each other the next day. If either of them had thought of what terrible things this would bring to both of them because of how quick they were moving, they would realize how bad of an idea it is to get married after knowing each other for only three or four hours. In the prologue, “A pair of star-cross’d lovers take their life” (DBQ: Project, 2013), Romeo and Juliet are destined to take their life after one another. With a misunderstanding that Juliet is dead, Romeo drinks poison to die with his lover.
If he had simply grieved her death like most people do, then they both could have lived. It’s understandable that Romeo didn't want to live without the love of his life but killing himself took it to an extreme. The whole reason Juliet took the sleeping elixir was to get out of her
With this being said Romeo and Juliet are not responsible for their impulsive behavior. I can guarantee you that they would have lived happily if there was not tension between the 2 families. Therefore, you can't blame the 2 lovers if they aren't allowed to be together
But he expected that would come in the future and isn't a problem now. There are a lot of problems in the story of not planning ahead. He knows the family's problems have been here forever and knows that they won't agree to this marriage. But when Romeo died he had the nerve to say this to Juliet. “ Come, go, good Juliet.
First, Romeo and Juliet are responsible for their own deaths. For example, everytime there were hardships that they thought they wouldn’t be able to overcome, the first solution in their minds was to kill theirself for each other. This means that they are ignorant and don’t even stop to think about what else could be done to fix their problem. As a result, they are quick to assume and act even though things can be prevented. Furthermore, Romeo immediately bought poison instead of heading to Friar Laurence to get an explanation on what was going on.
This is the main problem that Romeo and Juliet face being together. Love is the most to blame for the tragic deaths of Romeo and Juliet because it causes people to care for others and make impulsive decisions. Romeo’s cousin, Benvolio loved and cared about Romeo so he helped Romeo when he was sad. After Romeo was dumped by his first love, Rosaline, Benvolio says, “Compare her face with some that I shall show, And I will make thee think thy swan a crow” (Shakespeare 1.2.86,87). Benvolio is telling Romeo that if they go to
Romeo’s impulsive nature gets him into trouble so he starts acting purely off of his emotions. Lastly, Romeo choosing to act off of emotion rather than logic leads to multiple deaths. When Romeo hears the news of Juliet’s death, he immediately decided he wanted to die with her. He sets out to find poison so he can lay himself to death in the Capulet's tomb. He drinks it, and with a final statement Romeo declares, “Here’s to my love [drinks] O true apothecary!

They are madly in love, but their family members prohibit them from establishing an easy relationship. Romeo, the male teenager, is the one who starts the relationship between the two. The play Romeo and Juliet written by William Shakespeare is one of the most well known love stories in American history. This tragedy was written between 1591-1596 and was made to enlighten humanity of events that happen in the real world. Responsibility is important in this play because the way the events were played out could have ended differently if they were put in different circumstances. The family feud between the Capulets and Montagues are to blame for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet because the feud is what restricted their love and caused them to go through extreme measures to be together.
Did he really have to kill himself because of Juliet’s death ? Couldn’t he just gone to the Friar to tell him that he is going to kill himself or to see what happened to Juliet? If Romeo would of at least waited to see what happens with Juliet with the Friar, he would of probably not died. And because of his death, when Juliet wakes up from her sleep in the tomb, she stabs herself with Romeo knife and kills herself. This could of easily been prevented if Romeo would of not bought the poison from the Apothecary.
Thus with a kiss I die” (Act 5, Scene 3, Lines 119-120). Romeo knows that the poison will kill him, and yet he still drinks it. His choice to take his own life, although he made it out of grief for his dead love, was still his own rash and poorly made decision.
An obstacle between them was that they could not see each, then Romeo was banished, and the result was someone else proposing to Juliet. No one knew that Romeo and Juliet were married, except the Friar and Nurse, and Juliet did not want to accept the proposal. Shakespeare writes, “And I will do it without fear or doubt” (4.1.89), this is clear that Juliet did not want to marry anyone but Romeo, and that she was prepared to sacrifice her life. Another example of undying loyalty between Romeo and Juliet is when Shakespeare writes “Romeo, Romeo, Romeo! Here’s drink.

The fact that these two lovers still had the chance to cross each other’s paths despite the clash of their families, shows that fate was in full control of their lives. In the first act, a Capulet serving man comes across Romeo and Benvolio and unaware that they’re Montagues, he invites them to the Capulet party, “My master is the great rich Capulet, and if you be not of the house of Montagues, I pray come and crush a cup of wine.” (l.ii.80-82). It is by fate that Romeo and Benvolio ran into the illiterate Capulet serving man who asked for their help and by gratitude, invites them to the party, at which Romeo is destined that he will meet his love, Juliet. When Romeo attends the party, he already foreshadows what destiny had in store for him, “With this night’s revels and expire the term/Of a despised life clos’d in my breast,/By some vile forfeit of untimely death.”
