Freedom is a hard thing to create a single unison answer for because it changes for everyone. For some people it may mean the right to believe in any religion; for another person, it may mean the right to speak their mind [as a woman]. It is always changing and developing, however, America has been known for their freedom that is granted to its citizens through three important doctrines: The Declaration of Independence, The United States Constitution, and The Bill of Rights. The oldest doctrine that first spoke of freedom to US citizens is The Declaration of Independence of 1776. Which is responsible for multiple things. First it declared the freedom of the thirteen American colonies from Great Britain. Next, it advanced a theoretical case for revolution, discussing human rights and the nature of national sovereignty. Lastly, it sets out a precise list of specific complaints which the American colonists had against the actions of the British government over the last 15 years. The previous governmental charter, the Articles of Confederation, failed because it was just too weak and wasn’t getting the job done. Under the Articles of Confederation, there was no court system, no chief executive, and there was no particular way for the central government to force states to pay their taxes. By creating the Constitution, it would build a stronger central government and would be able to hold the nation together.
The constitution of the United States was a document created to fix the major problems the Confederation government had following its creation. The meetings in which the document was created founded the style of government that has lasted to this day. It created the Executive, legislative, and judicial branches of government, it created our bill of rights, and it separated powers between the states and the newly formed federal government. After fighting for so long and hard to secure independence from the British rule, the young United States of America needed to come together to form a strong nation. Having literally sacrificed blood, sweat, and tears to free themselves from the tyrannical oppression of an over-powered central government, the people wanted to ensure that they would not be trading one for another. There needed to exist a means to effect a measure of equality and security for the newly founded country. The Constitution aimed to do just that.
