Author Barbara Smith addresses the events that evolved in the city of Los Angeles on March 3, 1991, regarding police brutality towards a black man Rodney King, before handcuffing King after a high-speed chase. Across the nation resonated a shock wave of unbelieve as the police officers involved were acquitted which sparked a violent movement in the local community (39). Activist, Martin Luther King Jr. launched a voting rights campaign in Selma, Alabama where only 355 of the 15,000 black residents were permitted to register to vote (Foner, 995). Johnson asked Congress to enact a law securing the right to vote, finally showing support from the federal government during the movement. The National Voting Rights Act of 1965 was passed that allowed federal officials to register voters. Additionally, the twenty fourth amendment outlawed the poll tax that prevented poor blacks and some whites, from voting in the South.

The quote stated above by Rodney King is an interpretation of how he feel towards police brutality. Rodney King was an African American male who was brutally beat by police officers when he refused to pull over. This incident showed that officers can be cruel and as a future criminal justice professional, it makes me question the understanding of ethical practices in the criminal justice system. Unlike Rodney King, the man in the video was not beat but he was tortured –twisting of his arm. Both Rodney King and the man in the video were helpless as they continued to scream for help.

Martin Luther King Jr. was born on january 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia where he started his fight for the Civil Rights movement. He started the Montgomery Bus Boycott on December 1, 1955 after becoming the leader of the Montgomery Improvement Association (MIA). The boycott was a political and social campaign against the policy of racial segregation on the public transit system. Over the course of the years, war has been perceived as violent and unnecessary and most Americans hate the idea of it. They can’t understand the justifications for why America goes to war and they absolutely won’t stand for it. There have been many movements in the United States in which African Americans have been the focal point for example the Selma March, the March on Washington, the civil rights movement, and even today the Black Lives Matter movement. Those movements have had a significant impact on the United States and still play a part in today’s society. Those movements still play a part in today’s society because without those movements there wouldn’t be a Black Lives Matter because African Americans wouldn’t have the courage to stand up a fight for their rights if it wasn’t for Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Rosa Parks, or the many other activists that stood up for African-American rights. Selma and the March on Washington share a big relationship to the Black Lives Matter and they are just as important to the civil rights movement.
